wow, those are some pretty hostile feelings you have bottled up. Ever think about talking to someone professional about them? Or you could just live and let live...no one is forcing you to play RPGs, and the people who do seem to enjoy it quite a bit:P

I'm always impressed with your ability to flame someone [who deserves it] back into the stone age and yet still come across as a really nice guy...great job Jeremy;)
What does BSD have anything to do with Caldera? The original point was that without the GPL, Caldera wouldn't have an "OpenLinux" product to be selling, a point you missed entirely.
For comparison, here's a screen shot of the new modern theme being displayed inside the old one. screenshot
One guy told me it "looks like winxp", but I think it's more a smooth MacOS X;)
Thank you. I'm getting kind of tired of all this DSL-bashing. My service has been great for the past year...1.5M/384k, 4 static IPs, freedom to run any and all services. (XO/Covad) I'll never switch to cable unless they can beat that.
"On the subject of copyright, all your arguments have been thought of before, better, by somebody else"
Wow, and just because you say this 3 times and shout it to the world, that somehow makes it true? Just because you aren't smart enough to think of something new doesn't mean the world is devoid of intellectual thinkers capable of this feat.
Hmm, I'm out of touch because some AC told me so? Heh, fact still is your mom has to get help every week and that the computer is not inherently "easy to use." It's ok, feel free to bury your head back in the sand...
Your mom has to call you every couple weeks? That doesn't sound like she's using a very "easy to use" desktop. Maybe she should try something like Linux or FreeBSD...
The only sad thing here is that you failed to realized that every system requires the user to learn how it works. I don't find windows any more complex or less complex than linux: I've learned them both very well over the years. I happen to prefer linux because it gives me more flexiblity. Some people prefer a system with more contraints (makes them feel better? safer?) Some people think Windows is so complex that they give up and get an iMac. Different people with different needs will choose different desktops. Having just "one" desktop is most certainly a disadvantage. Your concepts of "easy" and "difficult" are out of touch with reality.
and XO announced they were getting out of the Home Office business
Where did you see this? I knew something was up when I couldn't find my DSL package listed on XO's website. Now I'm worried that they will cancel my account, but so far I haven't gotten any warnings from them. Maybe they will continue to provide service for those already in the program and will just stop signing up new "Home Office" accounts? I can only hope...I've been a happy XO/Concentric customer for about a year now.
Thank you. I've been using Covad/XO DSL for about a year now, exactly for those reasons. While I'm still crippled on the upstream (384k), it's much better than anything cable or the ILEC DSL offer. It does piss me off that I can't get anything more, especially since I am less than a mile from the CO. Maybe enough pressure will force these bastards to give up on cramming expensive T1s down our throats.
Why do you limit me to "picking two." What universal law states that something can only have 2 positive qualities? I've seen this same flawed logic applied to NASA. Yes, there will be trade offs when choosing one technology over another, but don't give me this "pick 2" BS.
FWIW, my "business" DSL is 1.5/384k (fast), $89/month (cheap), and has less than 15 mins of downtime over the last year (reliable). That's only one example, granted, but I'm sure others have experienced similar things.
Remember, it's usually the bad experiences/negative examples that you hear about the most. People who aren't having a problem are not known for complaining.
Your aruguments are nothing more than anecdotal evidence. I could give you plenty of examples of difficult/easy W2k installations and plenty of difficult/easy Redhat installs. When you come to the point of realizing that some hardware works better than others within the various operating systems, you will have reached a point of maturity. Until then, you are just adding to the noise level of Slashdot.
But. I live in the USA. And my post is certainly based on the American culture I've observed
I agree. I was caught in a dilema: reply in agreement that Americans are soft on violence and hungup on sex, or reply in protest of stereotypes. In the end I think was mainly just giving you a hard time;)
Does your script evaluate the necessity and/or possible damage that an update might cause? There's no way in hell I would ever trust an automated system to do my updates, even if I wrote the script myself. I've had too many things hosed by indiscriminate updating, so much so that I would argue a true *NIX guru validates/authorizes any updates before they happen.
Um, America doesn't have a "15[years plus] rating. G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 are about it. Something tells me this guy wasn't from the USA. Maybe AU? Great stereotyping, though.
You conveniently ignore the fact that many Christians were actively trying to fight/stop/kill Hitler, especially a man named Dietrich Bonhoffer, an amazing theologian who ended up being executed trying to stop the evil that was Hitler.
They have over 2000 nodes running Linux including desktops and farm workers, with plans to buy 100s more this year.
One of the coolest things is seeing Linux being used right next to the Origin 2ks and Sun boxes...

You seem much more bent on denial than anyone else here, unwilling to accept terms and definitions of a concept that you clearly do not understand.

Nice troll. Yeah, I hate it when 2 different articles use the same source and both of them quote it extensively in their write-up. Damn plagiarism.

XO is the ISP (Concentric) and this is the Wheaton/Naperville area...

1.5/384k, 4 static IPs, $90/month in the Chicago suburbs. Downtime has been almost non-existent.

Uh, it wasn't a comedy. I suggest to run to your nearest blockbuster and rent a few episodes. (I tend to like Tom Baker as the Doctor, but YMMV)
