Part of the never-ending war. If we can't communicate with them, the only solution is to blow them up! That will work. Always has. Pay NO attention tot he truckloads of money behind the curtain...
I felt the need to say: Same here! I saw all sorts of engineering guys graduate. A lot of smart people who did land some fine jobs, but the mantra did seem to be,"If you major in Engineering you'll have a job forever"
Somewhere there's at least one person with "Bee Shaver" on their CV. "We have a dire emergency, and we hear you're the best. There's a rare species of wasp invading the U.S. and we need to tag'em before we can bag'em." "Just tell me one thing: Where are the tweezers?"
For some people it seems that their work persona doesn't want to die, is afraid. These people don't seem to have the courage to actually build another life, even after they've attained much more than enough wealth to sustain themselves indefinitely.
My boss is 48 years old and can retire, but she doesn't. Her clients and work ARE her life and extracting herself from that web is difficult, I suspect.
I feel like we should retrain people who are working, just as we retrain people who aren't: The working, to transition to a late or early retirement, could learn idleness, contemplation, appreciation, and relaxation as skills to strive for. Other cultures have had this before, there is no reason it cannot come about again.
Or is the high that comes from controlling other people's fates too seductive to give up?
Oh really? At work it takes a few minutes for the computer to reboot. At home, i7 quad-core laptop with 12 gigs of RAM, with my work software? damn thing can take up to 5-10 minutes to get rolling, and I bought it just a few years ago. It's obscene, and I'm at the point monetarily/time-wise that I'm nearly ready to just buy a new computer rather than hassle with trying to fix the old one.
Without all the work software, thing would probably fly... used to boot to desktop in about 25 seconds flat
What kind of propaganda are you pushing, who are you working for, or how ignorant are you to not have read seemingly ANYTHING about the Oculus Rift before posting this? The entire idea has been to ship some time in 2014.
More importantly, Carmack just came on and it's not HIS project. If I'm not mistaken he was tapped after the car crash that killed the fellow who was heading this part of the project.
Jeez, seriously, how does this stuff get modded up?
I was in high school for that, freshman year. They predicted wind chill of something utterly nuts like 70 below zero, and you know what? KNOW WHAT SLASHDOT!? I still had to go to school.
I can finally say it: Goddamn kids... get off my lawn.
What if I don't value either of those and would rather just sit back smugly at all the mice scurrying around trying desperately to have a good time? Worked last year. worked this year. Never had jollier, more relaxing holidays before that.
I just stopped worrying about Christmas. People get so worked up over this expectation of happiness, it doesn't seem like a holiday as much as a sport or battlefield. Last year, I just stayed home, listened to christmas tunes, ate a burrito, had a nap and played some games. It was restful, jolly, and maybe the best Christmas I've ever had.
Just share with neighbors. Hire an electrician, share with people on your block or just next door.
Start thinking like a community again, USA! If I had extra energy I'd share it with the neighbors so their bill is lower. Could it be a little complex and cost money? Yeah. But the goodwill and sense of community it develops would be awesome.
This is the solution. Separate we are defeated. In unison, as a community, we fail.
The way to fight COINTELPRO is to educate people and get them used to sex and deviance more.
Cheated on your wife? Ok, fine, yeah. people like sex and it happens. We all get attracted to others, let's not worry too much about it and move on. Are you still in a job and have a stable family who you spend time with and show them you care? Great! Then what's the big deal... ? If kings can have harems and mistresses then people should be allowed to as well. Non-monogamy: it isn't just for the nobility anymore! This is the goddamn 21st century, let's admit we're all human.
Watch porn? Great! You love masturbating and that's a healthy thing. Watch midget porn? Yeah, that's cool too? Peeing on midgets? That's pretty creative, how awesome is that? Like hiring midgets to pee on you? Well maybe you're a little removed from society and could use a night out to socialize. That's cool.:)
Discrediting people only happens when there's guilt associated with it. If we open people up to more ideas then it's harder to shame them.
Slashdot: You're about education. The hard part about education is that emotions and points of view go along with facts. We can analyze and logic out the FACTS all we want here, the hard part is assimilating a changing world into how we actually feel and interact with others. That takes time and effort.
We have an education system that frickin' deifies memorizing details, but does little or nothing to raise up thought, which takes time, introspection, and (yes) socialization.
I seem to have forgotten my point here... aha! COINTELPRO: It's only a bad thing if you can be shamed. If everybody outs themselves as deviant then it becomes socially acceptable and we have much less to fear. It's like going and sitting on that bus: Just do it. And keep doing it.
Um... check the facts. Look at the number of groups that are "red" which would have received IRS flags simply by virtue of how they did business, and the basic number of them versus the number of "blues". It wasn't targeting, they simply went after what looked suspicious.
Look, if you have 100 yellow widgets and 25 green widgets, and 10% of all of them have issues, then OMG there are more defective yellow widgets. That's what happened here. Stop being a media mouthpiece and start looking at the facts for yourself.
Not buying anything, why fight the crowds? I tried it once and there was just nothing I really wanted to buy, but it was an experience I won't forget. In fact, I'll do the same thing as last year: Absolutely nothing. I saw no one, and bought nothing. It might be the best Thanksgiving I've ever had. No running around, no madness, just me, myself and I. I can't decide if the fact that I'm neither going shopping nor spending any time with family is a good thing or not. Please, internet, tell me what to think!
This has been posted on here before, so I'm kind of just karma whoring, but I have long suspected, and explained to others, that this idea that we can all work until we're 70 or 75 because we'll live to 100 for this generation is bullshit, a scam to keep us grinding along and working until we drop dead. I say that with all the technological advances we've made in the last 50 years we may have less of an idea of what much of it does to the body than we think. it might not be making for a good quality of life at advanced age. We may be living longer, but what I feel I am seeing in older people is that some of them are quite unhappy with how they feel. Then again, others say anything is better than being dead. Thoughts? Whew, is it hot in here or is it just me?
Strangely, I once knew an anesthesiologist who was just like this. He tried to strangle me in public once, but before that he'd tell us about all sorts of things he'd done to other people, professional rules he loved to break, pictures he'd take of patients when they weren't looking. Great-looking guy, highly successful, but he did fit the descriptions above, esp. when he flipped his shit.
So a venture capitalist apparently offered the creator 5 million for Winamp and that was declined... so... wouldn't that mean there are other plans for the IP?
2 tons of sand for one barrel of oil? With all the processes needed to get the sand and process it that sure doesn't sound like it makes monetary sense to even extract the oil in the first place... can someone help me understand what I'm missing?

That's the lowest recorded in Chicago proper, perhaps. Up/out in the suburbs, away from the lake, it can and has gotten much colder.

wow, ha! um, that was supposed to be "prevail", which rhymes with fail...

I really wish I had mod points...
When there is a question like this in a headline, it's just looking for clicks.
Just answer "No."
End of discussion, right? Right? :P
I only had to move from Chicago to LA to experience low-end, unreliable DSL. Why did this guy go to so much extra trouble?
If it has to be a sworn statement that goes to court, why doesn't it have to be a sworn statement that stops her from getting on the plane?

Going to wear a dress shirt, slightly unbuttoned, with a Superman t-shirt underneath, and go to Lucha Vavoom in Los Angeles.
It's gonna be awesome.
was... um... was I supposed to say I'm staying home and programming? Cuz... no way.

Coming from someone whose job was surveillance this sounds like quite a threat. If I were Matzzie I'd watch myself.
