  1. CPU = Colour? on Doing the Math On the New MacBook · · Score: 1

"As before, Im not going to weight the importance of the categories."

So, Lenovo wins on CPU, Hard disk, display AND Graphics. As FAr as I'm concerned that seems like a big win for lenovo, whereas the author puts equal weight on thickness colour, and "Environmental impact"- like there isn't a single manufacturer that won't lie and make unsubstantiated claims about it.

The point iI'm making, is with such a biased subject, leaving massive holes like that is just going to make the whole article pointless for most people, because you can still use so many arguements outside what's been investigated.

  2. Haggle on The Facts & Fiction of Bandwidth Caps · · Score: 1

Whatever happened to haggling? It's such a weird feeling people have today, that you can't haggle witha corporation, that somehow their prices are set in stone. You call 'em up and tell them you want 500gigs a month or you walk. 90% of the time they'll want you business more with the 250gig extra you'll probably never use than not selling you anything (this works well, because their costs are so very indirect- a light pulse along a piece of glass doesn't cost anything*) It's always useful to have a competitor prepared just to push them a little.

*ignoring the minute electricity costs the sole costs are maintenance which don't vary with use, except for increasing capacity- and any good IT company should realise they're gonna be expanding sooner or later.

I say that, not because of the code, but because of what itunes 8 is, it's Apple installing some more DRM to close a hole someone found, apple hates DRM, but then amazingly it spends a huge amount of effort maintaining it. Has anyone seen the NBC shows back on iTunes, they're CHEAPER than before, so turns out, Apple was inflating the price, not nbc. Just seems like apple screws you at every opportunity.

You didn't even read the summary. It only happens when you plug an ipod in, ie, a piece of hardware is bringing the system down- probably through driver problems, but possibly for other reasons. To quote the summary " now whenever I plug in my iPod, I get a blue screen death." That's not software, thats hardware, and thus, much more likely to cause a crash if it isn't treated properly.

It looks like they've designed a version of linux to run web apps, which are by their design, supposed to work on virtually every existing PC with a browser already, seems kinda pointless- they've just added widgets, which could have been a single application. Just for reference of how well ubuntu can be adapted, have a look at mint- much more user friendly (for customizations), that's where I'd go for an ubuntu-like distro.

Of course it means the hacker could change them down to the minimum wage (pissing off the workers) or move them a little further up (pissing off the government) either way, no one can change it back! Oh and of course the third option- change the wages to 1 cent below minimum wage, it'll piss off the workers, and it'll screw the government too. :P

So I have my A level maths exam (core 3) in two days, taking it a year early, and I'm still finding it trivial, and thats because I'm working from '90s papers and they're so much harder. So basically yes, the exam I am taking has gotten easier over the past years. It's not that the questions are easier though, it's because year by year subjects get dropped so you can focus so much more time on one subject so you can quite easily perfect your understangin of it.

  10. Yes But No on What's the Solution To Intellectual Property? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    IP today? No
I beleive in the concept of intellectual property from an idea in order to ensure the original creator gets suitably reimbursed for their work. However, When intellectual property was first introduced the period was only 15 years (or close), since then it's been raised a raised untill we have this situation, of whoever patents an idea first keeps it for eternity (not quite, but the rate of IP being extended is actually faster than the time is running out, so with the trends of today, eternity) Of course that trend is completely the reverse of the intention of IP, because as the economy has grown, more money can be made in a shorter time, so surely the IP laws should shorten the time IP is protected?
As for outrageous settlements for the RIAA, I have easily enough songs to bankrupt me several times over, so why on earth would I stop taking the songs now? The difference would be between a fine of $1 000 000 and $1 050 000, either way, I simply don't have that money- if I can't afford to buy the music in the first place, why on earth would they presume I can afford a fine like that. Plus the out of court setttlements aren't proportional to the songs sold.
With modern pop music, no serious critic would claim that more than 5% of it's value remains after 5 years, by then all there is is small royalties for the odd CD bought, and most of the money has been made, that's when the IP runs out. This is just a side effect of teh type of music created now, and of course could be reveiwed if some music that aged better was produced.

It's one thing getting up on your high horse and saying "Censorship is wrong" is one thing, but ascribing it negative effects is simply doesn't have is just damaging your own cause. The websites listed are on different damn subjects, one discusses the merits of polygraphs, one helps people search for people trained in using them. So one's a discussion forum, one's an information source, not the same thing at all. The simple fact is if censorship had such measurable negative effects then it would be well known and it wouldn't happen any where near as much.

However I think there's a greater problem, how the heck do you quantize censorship, is it deleting spam? Deleting posts who disagree with you? Shouting down anyone who disagrees with you? Banning opposing views? Moderating posts so only the consensus of the moderators is shown to the general users?

Day 1, 0930: US surrenders due to lack of any ability to locate their troops and organise them

GPS in a military situation has always seemed to me kind of a bad idea to rely on too much. You put all this technology in your air crafts, your tanks, all your hummers, but when these precious badly defended satellites get knocked out the planes cant fly and tanks, ships and other operations are seriously impared. How secret can you keep a satellite and how do you defend them (short of shooting anything that comes near them)

Firstly, it's nothing to do with "Oh my God how amazing is my mac" it's more like, "Oh my God just how badly can microsoft constantly screw up". And in my opinion this is a very very very bad trend, we're going from a heavily locked down operating system run by a monopoly, to what is a more (in some ways) locked down system which will become a monopoly, AND this is from the guys who make the ipod, YOU MUST USE OUR ITUNES FOR YOUR IPOD, YOU MUST USE OUR ITUNES FOR OUR SONGS, and the lesser known lying to customers about their internet browser. So they've proved they can't be trsuted to handle the majority of market share. So does no one else worry that, having seen microsoft badly screw up, people are moving to the most locked down untrustworthy alternative they could find?
