As a fan of all things Stargate I've been unsuccessful in tracking down any episodes of Infinity, where can I can get the entire series that was made? I know there's some promo DVD but I want the entire series.

But that's my point, doesn't matter how new the LCD screen is it still has a viewing angle, CRT can be seen from any angle and the brightness doesn't change like an LCD. The biggest annoyance I have with the brightness thing on large LCD screens is how the bottom is brighter than the top when all it's displaying is a single colour on screen.

Don't get me wrong, LCD screens are great in their place like the small one on my Archos AV500 but I'm not yet ready to 'upgrade' my two PC CRTs to LCD because I very much value the even brightness on the screen.

  7. Re:Waste of money on Softening the Edges of Technology · · Score: 1

I will probably mourn the day I can't buy a new CRT monitor, say what you will about them being too big, bulky & energy ineffecient, they never go inverse when you look at them from an askew angle - that's the main reason I don't like LCD screens because you keep having to get your head in the right viewing zone to get a clear & proper picture.

With the inevitability of it having funding by advertising, there's a chance the search results will be more biased towards returning links to companies that pay more, yes I know Google work like this with their officially sanctioned adverts on the top & side of the search results but what's to stop companies editing the main results to bias towards them?

"Umm, because now they can offer a much larger catalogue and you have even less excuse than ever for pirating something that you claim is rare / not available locally?"

But the biggest hurdle of any new video/audio storage format is getting access to the much larger catalogue, if a copyright/distribution holder of a particular piece of work that's out of print in every currently available format says "no" or it's held up in legal issues (like for example "The Keep" which I want on DVD instead of my original VHS & 4:3 satellite recording on DVDR) then that title will still hold it's rare status.
And if a company that has copyright/distribution rights on a large amount of well known titles says no then the new format's future will look slim.

If you really want to reduce power consumption on the screen side of things, Emagin produce some 800x600 OLED 'LCD' glasses that power from the USB port, but the price is hefty as they recently tripled them from around $500 to around $1500 (though around $700 on eBay).

There's an article in a recent Electronics Weekly all about OLEDs and how they use about a quarter the power of an equivilant LCD screen mainly because there's no backlight.

  24. CinemaNow on BitTorrent Legit Service Launches · · Score: 1

On the subject of paying for downloading tv episodes/movies, a couple of years ago I heard about this site called http://www.cinemanow.com/ because at one time you could pay to download the season 3 episodes of ReBoot (which the DVDs are now long out of print) but it would've cost $160 to download the 16 episodes at $10 each, and the quality is nowhere near that of the DVDs.

CinemaNow does have quite a bit of content to download, some of it free as it's subsidies by advertising just like normal tv, but most of the content is pretty obscure (read: too terrible for normal tv, but I spotted a few titles that MST3K had ripped into)
