If you really need the steamshovel, a car is not a replacement, but the vast majority of people just need to drive around, and a car is perfectly fine.

Analogy explained -- I can see why some people actually need all the shit MS Office has, but for most people, OpenOffice is fine... hardly a Ferrari vs Yugo.. of course, you got modded up by the "I'm cool because I don't follow Slashdot groupthink" people, who, amusingly, have their own groupthink... so there you go... I'll probably be modded down by the same people. :P

I might pick this up at some point, though I'll probably wait for the price to come down first.

I was throughly addicted to the Sims 1 when it first came out (4 years ago or something?).. for a few weeks. After I played it more or less constantly for a few weeks, it suddenly got really old.. the first expansion was okay, but after that they didn't seem to be adding anything I was interested in. Ah well, there are obviously plenty of other people who like it.

One thing I noticed... with a lot of games, I'll play them a bunch, stop for months, and then start them up again and have just as much fun... but I've never been able to get back into the Sims.

But if this is a truly *new* game based on the old idea, I bet it'd be fun again.

I haven't been very impressed with Bush, but all the "ANYBODY BUT BUSH/NO BLOOD FOR OIL/OMGWTFBUSHSUX0RS" 'liberals' have completely driven me away from that side as well. While I will most likely be voting for a third-party candidate, at this point I'd rather see Bush win than Kerry, mainly because the Democrat side seems so horrible now. Then again, if Bush loses, the Republicans may realize that they're been moving in the wrong (IMO, of course :)) direction, and will re-shape themselves into a better party.

Most of the other sections have the same "News for Nerds" tagline at the top, but apparently that may be changing, since the "IT" section says "It is what IT is", and the "Linux" one, as you pointed out, says "Don't fear the penguins". Both of which, IMHO, are stupid, but hey.
