Because of course there's never a need for a military!
If we all just loved one another there would be no fighting, and there would be puppies and rainbows and unicorns everywhere, and everybody would have their own moon pony!
Europe yes, US no. Last I checked, US birth rate was barely at "replacement level" (~2.1 babies/woman), Western Europe as a whole was slightly below, with variation between countries (some countries were well below, others at or slightly above). So without immigration, the US would basically remain at the same population, and Western Europe would slowly start declining. As it is, population is growing in both locations.
Please don't. In fact, please don't buy Spore at all. If they're stupid enough to pull this kind of anti-customner crap, how can they possibly be smart enough to make a decent game?
You're assuming the creators of the game and those who decide DRM policies are the same. I *highly* doubt that is the case. This is a case of some PHBs at EA with their collective heads up their collective asses, and has nothing to do with Will Wright or any of the designers and creators of Spore.
(That said, I'm much less likely to buy the game now, too.)
They probably just reversed the polarity of the deflector dish; from the various documentaries I've seen on the subject that usually allows antineutrinos to be detected.
I just recently replaced a dead Seagate HDD that held the OS (WinXP in this case) with a 36GB Raptor, after looking into SSDs but deciding the price point wasn't really there yet. The Raptor is pretty great: XP is ready to go 30 seconds after turning on the power (this is a stripped down version of XP using nLite, so YMMV on XP boot times.. but I've discovered XP is actually a decent desktop OS once you strip out all the extra crap). So I'm happy.
Good (for some values of "good") timing on their part, what with the news that the world is actually cooling, including the most snowfall in 50 years in North America, and record levels of Antarctic sea ice.
Here we are, trying to keep our planet warm with a nice, insulating layer of carbon dioxide, and the darn ol' sun has to go and become less active.
Why does "Bennett Haselton" get to use the Slashdot front page as his personal blog? At least Roland submits interesting articles most of the time. Does Mr. Haselton have incriminating pictures of CowboyNeal or something?
I've been playing WoW for almost 3 years, and play almost every day. The CD's are in the box, in a drawer, and have not left since I first installed. Is the CD check new, or something?
Not only did you not RTFA, and not only did you not RTFSummary, but you didn't even RTFTitle!
We're talking about Warcraft III, not World of Warcraft.
I like the "big three" not including the Wii. Might want to check the sales figures again, Scott.
Scott Miller also predicted a couple years ago that the Wii would finish "a distant third" and that it could mean the end of Nintendo, or something along those lines.
It's kinda sad to see the guy who wrote the Kroz series become obsessed with graphics at the expense of gameplay. Though then again, most of Apogee's game weren't especially innovative gameplay-wise, a lot of their success at the time was based on marketing (the episodic shareware model and so on). Plus after the first few years Apogee mainly started publishing others' games (id being the most famous, but a lot of other smaller companies as well), not doing much of their own stuff. So maybe it's never really been about gameplay for him, in which case it makes perfect sense for him to advocate for the PS3.
ASCII games on an IBM PC.. I believe the original Compaq "Portable", which my dad used to bring home from work occasionally.
Can I preemptively tell anyone thinking of writing a post that contains the name "Playstation" to just not do it? Please? I'm feeling old enough today...
Seems to me that if the universe is a simulation, then the obvious ending condition would be "when the residents figure out they're in a simulation". The creator of the simulation could be stretching his noodly appendages out towards the 'killall -9 universe' keys right now, now that this guy has gone and blabbed about it to everyone.

A monkey, when asked for comment, was reportedly "shocked".

Um.. I agree that VB.NET is nothing like BASIC, but that's a bad thing.
Also, "biased".
Unbibium is the temporary name, of course. Eventually it will receive another name.
Since it's super-heavy and naturally-occurring, I suggest "Cowboynealium".
If so, hope they are paying royalties to the patent-holder:

The vowel in question in "Erdos" is an o with double-acute-accent, not an umlaut... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_alphabet if you care. :)
B.A. in physics? I'm trying to decide if that's weirder than my school giving out a B.S. in music or English.

REM hasn't been especially high-activity since New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
Web sites have ads? Who knew?
Anyway, good luck with your failing business model, newspapers! I'm sure the buggy whip manufacturers will have some words of comfort for you.
"I no longer use a PC" - What did you make your website with? A pencil and pad?
Also known as Web 0.1...
I'm sure this will be needed at some point, so let's get it out of the way now:

Fortunately, after reading the scathing criticism, Comcast executives were able to comfort themselves with their huge sacks of money.
As for myself, I plan to dump Comcast right away and switch to... oh wait, Comcast is my only option for Internet access. Well.
Perhaps I'll go dig out the ol' 2400 baud modem, maybe I can find a BBS to call.

Personally, I welcome our Soviet Russian overlords.
Shouldn't your Soviet Russian overlords welcome you?
