It's not about price. Serious switchers wouldn't go back to a Microsoft product even if it was $1 because it doesn't solve the problems that Linux has solutions for.
That doesn't mean it wouldn't work for all Microsoft shops trying to get a better deal.
I think the idea is that a consumer would notice they're actually paying for Windows now you can buy a laptop with Linux. For example, Windows costs $100 it's more noticeable when your Dell checkout price goes from a $250 laptop to a $350 laptop.
I don't agree with this reasoning though because I have noticed that consumers tend to go for the best hardware available "just in case they want to do something with it later".
Actually carrier pigeons with 1 to 3 gig flash drives doesn't sound like a bad idea. It would probably reach it's destination faster too if you're talking about transferring up to 3 gigs over a 56k line.
Whatever the americans have done it's not as bad as killing people in the street.
It's not as bad as raiding Monks at their sanctuaries shooting and beating them and taking them away in trucks. They're probably in a big death pit right now being covered with soil to hide the evidence, one can only guess.
That's great but it was China and Russia that vetoed the decision to doing anything on the Burma issue. Why? Because they're all oppressors of people, oh and the whole trade issue blah blah blah, yeah right..
Only a few Countries vetoed the decision to do anything and right now good people are being killed because of it, but at least they talked about stopping them! Right?
Yes that is exactly what should happen. We should say "Fuck russia and China's vetoes" and go in there and fuck up their regime Iraq style. Sorry about the swearing but how could you think the UN could do anything with all that in-fighting?!? Oppressors of the world unite it veto doing anything on Burma.
Then again why should we care right? They're not Muslim so it's ok.
Look at Thailand's ex prime minister there is an arrest warrant out on him for stealing hundreds of millions of tax payers money and he is suspected of funding multiple bombings in Bangkok. He is a terrorist but the UK welcomes him with open arms and lets him buy a football club with Thailand's tax payers money. DOUBLE STANDARDS.
If you don't like the hours, don't get into the business.
WOW! Thanks for the advice! I wish someone has told me about the horrible conditions before I invested 10 years of my life in programming only to be told I would be a millionaire every step of the way.
After what happened to that teacher that was going to get sent to a Serbian prison camp for having 10 unlicensed copies of XP at his school and the fact that Microsoft is an American company I don't believe that Russia would EVER want to use Microsoft's products.
It would be interesting to see a game company release its binary as open source and let the community port it and fix bugs (ala secondlife) and just focus on producing mostly game content.
If you look at a game like Bioshock, it's about the story, the characters, etc. It's not really about openGL, directX, etc. I think game companies put too much value in controlling their customers with binaries you have to trust not to be doing things to you computer.
Granted you couldn't do this with every game, especially if they're trying to sell a game engine but then I think game engines being open sourced would be great for the industry as a whole anyway. Look at what open source ajax engines has done for web developers why can't the games industry pull together and see it's about artistic merit not technical superiority.
Why not? People will pay whatever platform they use.
Just because Linux is a free operating system doesn't mean we are all cheapskates. I can't remember ever paying for Windows or any of the expensive programs anyway, my friends always had a copy. The only difference now is that I am not breaking the law.
I will continue to run Windows and OS X on my desktop machines until any of the Linux distributions mature enough to match what's available on the Windows
Maybe if you put in some effort to write out some bug reports instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you it would get done quicker. That is the laziest thing I have ever heard.
You have time to comment on Slashdot about how lame Ubuntu is but not enough time to write in the bug tracker about what your actual problems are.
Why don't you just grow a backbone and ask them to install the ODF plugin for office and send you an ODF.

I watched something the other day that said India was going to surpass the US by 2020.

I don't believe. It sounds more like reinforcements are being pulled in to oppress the city.

I'm English not American and I don't want terrorists/murderers running around free in my country just because they're rich.
We should send all Burma's diplomats packing as they have no respect for human life.

They priced it at $30 per gig but said the price may change.
That's because you don't wear anything else!!
When you buy a car you get to choose extra options like a CD player, DVD player, Sat Nav, etc..
Is it REALLY that difficult for a sales person to say..
"OK now you've chosen the hardware do you want me to install Windows or Ubuntu on your pc?"
Throw the Ubuntu hard drive in their computer and away they go. Why do geeks always assume the consumer has to do it themselves.
In most cases I am sure the place you bought the computer from would install windows for you.
That's the same as any start-up..
I could set-up my own ad sense / double click service right now at cheaper rates then Google offers and there is nothing they could do to stop me.
I wondered why no one had asked this...
Rubuntu? Rentoo? Rudora?!
I don't believe you.

Yes it is!! People always describe Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows. ITS NOT!! Its an alternative OS!!!
Then use the LTS release, that's what it's for. LONG TERM SUPPORT!!!
