Not all poor people are dumb farmers that live in mud huts located in the middle of no where.
Bangkok has many poor people and they have power and food but no education. Even in the country side people don't live in mud huts with no electricity. Only first world morons like yourself think and talk about this crap with no idea what they're blabbering on about. KEEP THE POOR, POOR. Well, sorry asshole I beg to differ.
I have personally donated money numerous time to the local temple to provide books for the schools but it is not as good as providing a means for kids to learn a skill that would give them a better job then just farming.
Books and stationary become out of date and need to be replaced. These laptops could be passed down to students for decades if only just so the students could read books on them it would be worth it because printing books and shipping them around the country is expensive.
There's a difference between someone who looks ugly and someone who looks dishonest. It's not just physical appearance - it's mannerisms, etc. People are pretty good at reading each other's expressions. The blind guy is a total red herring.
+10 totally missed the point.
There's a difference between looking dishonest and being dishonest. It's not just physical appearance - it's actions, etc. People are pretty stupid at listening, reading, watching news and just take politicians opinions as fact.
"Maybe, would, could" become "is, was, has" which is then zealously debated to opponents that show real facts only to fall on deaf ears because they're not "pretty" enough to be listened to.
A leader needs to sound confident more than feel confident.
No. He needs to listen and take people's advice. Not be playing golf instead of reading CIA briefings on terrorists training to fly aircraft into buildings.
People want heroic stature in their leaders.
The TV dinner idiot masses want a heroic celebrity president.
The intelligent people want a detailed spreadsheet on what you want to change and where you're getting the money from to do it so they can equally compare the different parties (nothing long winded please, short and sweet).
The idea of one man or women making decisions that effect millions of people in good faith about subjects they know nothing about is just plain stupid. Why not just revert to King and Queens in power again since it is basically the same thing expect now we shift around who gets to be king. Wow what advancement for the human race.
Spread the power around so that the people who have spent their lives on a certain subject can make the decisions not some generic guy at the top. This way if someone knows nothing about health care you don't vote them in power of it.
There is in fact a coming divide that will hit the Linux community like a freight train. The battle lines have already been drawn, and companies that support Linux, such as Canonical, will eventually find themselves fiercely pitted against companies like Linspire, who only a short time ago, entered into an agreement of cooperation.
As a Linux user I don't see what this has to do with Microsoft or why they where even mentioned at all. It seems to be more to do with a divide between Linux distributions you have to pay for and ones you don't.
Canonical has made Linux Desktop a reality and now companies like Novell are suffering because of it.
No matter how hard we try to down play it, the patent threats and deals that are being made because of them are hurting the community - it's a simple fact.
How so? Maybe for the US but not the rest of the world.
A clash between the different versions of the GPL have already begun
Mixing GPL 2 and 3 code is not much of a problem if the project is using the "or at your option any later version" clause as most projects are. If not then you're screwed but in reality I fail to see any real cases of this happening. Note its only code, you could have GPL 2 and 3 applications running no problem side by side.
This article is all over the place what is the main point of this article again? It went from distribution divides, to licensing issues, to patent problems. arrgh! stay on topic!
Except everything you said in your post isn't the goal of Free and open source software.
The goal isn't: - To make a profit - To become popular - To attract the attention of larger companies
The goal of Free and Open Source Software is to keep the freedoms that allow you to use, modify and re-distribute. Restricting those freedoms in the name of attaining the goals you mentioned above would be completely missing the point of free and open source software, don't you think?
Now there are exceptions to this (although some hardcore GNU people will disagree). For example Ubuntu including proprietary graphics drivers so that it becomes more popular with their Goal of one day having a free and open driver to be able to switch to, when it becomes stable enough.
The things you mentioned above are nice but they should not be prioritised over the most important thing which is freedom. What MySQL has done is created a fracture in their own community between those who pay and those who don't.
I also noticed you need to use bitkeeper to download their source code, not exactly a company that embraces open source software...
I would say though that a browser should *never* trust input, whether that input is from a webpage or being executed via a command line.
I would say that it is a the operating system's job to sanitise the data that coming in over a command line and make ALL programs more secure.
You argument is lame in that you are saying that programs can't trust the data the operating system is handing them.
You are forcing application vendors to build in security for each and every program they write when Microsoft could write it once and every program would be secure.
Fine job of counter-villainizing, there. Because of course we ALL know that ALL environmentalists are either cohorts of Dr. Evil or his unwitting pawns.
I think most environmentalists live in their little world without thinking of anyone but themselves.
One environmentalist on the BBC proposed we should "ban all flights NOW" and that "there was no reason to fly". I'm sorry but idiots like this just have no practical view of the world. They don't have family half way across the world and they live in their little box acting all smug telling everyone else what we should be doing to "combat global warming" (TM).
What will happen in the end is it will cost me more money to visit my girl friend and relatives while all the money from new "carbon tax" laws is redirected into some random government project which has nothing to do with global warming.
Probably more so with people starting to implement GPL3 (which isn't going to have the effect that the authors/designers wanted).
Don't make a statement like that and not back it up with some information.. How? Why?
The different agendas and people trying to force others to their view is insane.
Yet here you are forcing your view on me.
Before you mod me down, I support and promote FOSS
So what? You want a medal? Oh since you support FOSS and are a fellow brother of the order I guess we should just ignore the BS you said above.
ok back on topic...
It is broken. There is only 3 countries in the WORLD that believe software can be patented. Want more proof..
Writing software is like writing a book...
One day Mary came across a scary looking mansion (STOP! scary looking mansions are patented!)... One day Mary came across a scary looking house with great glass doors. Mary decided to enter the house. Inside it smelled musty and damp (STOP! musty and damp scary houses are patented)..... Inside it smelled old...
You see my point. You can't patent story elements but you can patent "one click buttons". Therefore forcing your competitors to change their software and make is slightly suck compared to your software without forcing you to innovate and become better.
The patent system in America is getting even dumber with the patenting of DNA. Soon I am going to be violating someones patent because 80% of my genes is owned by a corporation. Before there used to be this word it was called DISCOVERING. This word meant that when you found out a way to do something in math you discovered it. In biology if you found a new organism you discovered it.
Today we have people claiming to have invented math and DNA WTF?!?
...they will have devices like in the movie "men in black" where they erase your memory after viewing the movie.
After all your brain is holding valuable IP and you only paid to experience that IP once. Through your memories you could illegally exchange that IP with others or play back parts of it in your mind.
If i have noticed anything its "if we have the technology to restrict it we will".
The article was supposed to be about Ubuntu but it spends more time talking about other operating systems. The conclusion doesn't mention Ubuntu at all, despite him having the least amount of problems with it.
True but who is to blame in a mega-corp where it is impossible to pin down who did what?
I remember in England a Train company that neglected to take care of the railway to gain more profits. Result? Multiple train crashes with many people dead.
The company was fined and no one went to prison. If you had the same situation where you could point a finger and say "it was him" then I would agree with you but these businesses are super massive and no one is ever to blame.
How about when GNU/Linux takes BSD copywritten code and infringes on that?
Why is it ok for propitiatory vendors to put BSD code into its operating system and not ok for a GPL project?
When its Apple and Microsoft it is using. When it is the GPL it is stealing. Your post is lame and makes the BSD community look like a bunch of elitist assholes.
... I assume this bill will only apply to people and not companies as it says..
criminalize some forms of "attempted infringement."
Say for example a company steals some GPL work they won't see any Jail time and/or penalties but a person who steals the companies work will get the full force of this bill. Not that the two are related but its the best analogy I could think of.
This will work well for many companies who favour stealing and ruining peoples lives in the name of profits and just doing my job. As usual the US government will not take a balanced view on the subject and do what their corporate masters tell them to.
If I am wrong and I does apply to the GPL for companies this quote says..
The bill allows "a judge to dole out damages for each separate piece of a derivative work or compilation, rather than treating it as one work," wrote Derek Slater, "for example, copying an entire album could translate into damages for each individual track, even if the copyrights in those tracks aren't separately registered."
Does that mean a judge could dole out damages for each separate source code files. Say someone is infringing the Linux copyright could a judge charge them per source.c file?
On the other hand you're taking an exact copy of something and enjoying it, but not paying for it. In other words, money would have been gotten by the development studio
downloading a copy != minus 1 sale
That is the kind of BS the RIAA and MPAA says and its not true.
Most game studios don't get to pick what they work on. The publisher tells them what they want to invest in. What probably happened was that Sony dictated to them that this is what they wanted.
Thank you for your interest in Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative. This guide is designed to assist you through the process of becoming a Shared Source licensee.
Oh nice and helpful:D
Step One: Determine Program
Determine which licensing program fits your needs. A comprehensive list of programs, features, and requirements is available on the Shared Source Licensing Programs overview.
okie now lets find the license for the bedroom hacker!
Enterprise Source Licensing Program (ESLP)
Nope
Government Security Program (GSP)
Nope
Most Valuable Professional Source Licensing Program (MVPSLP)
wtf?! Nope
OEM Source Licensing Program (OEMSLP)
ugh.. nope..
Systems Integrator Source Licensing Program (SISLP)
no....
Availability by Geographic Market
no.. buh! Hey wait, whats this?
National laws, practices, enforcement policies, and attitudes toward intellectual-property protection are reviewed in determining where Microsoft source code can be made available.
, review the eligibility requirements and geographic availability for that program. National laws, practices, enforcement policies, and attitudes toward intellectual-property protection are reviewed in determining where Microsoft source code can be made available. See the Availability by Geographic Market page for geographic market eligibility information.
What the hell is this. I have never seen such restrictions on GNU or BSD projects and why is it still "Microsoft's" source code. If it was truly an OPEN SOURCE license and venture the source code would belong to anyone that accepts the license.
Step Three: Get to the Source
Review and accept the license agreement for your program. Several Shared Source programs feature simple click-to-accept licenses, while others require separate, signed documents. Restrictions for the programs vary, so be sure to review the program descriptions.
Actually Anonymous Coward if my sales were "on track to meet projections" I would call that a win. Disagree if you want but people are buying them like the parent said.
I've personally participated in a few.NET open source projects.
Wow you've participated in projects that only run on Microsoft Windows! Good for you! That is exactly what Microsoft wants. They want you to do open source. Just not on any other platforms.
That is no reason to not assume Microsoft is trying to "muddy up the waters". Look at the patent deals they have been making with Linux distributions.. You have to be an idiot to think that they have decided to go open source after a decade (10 years) of trying to kill Linux and Open Source Software.
It is 3 times more then my year's salary I am currently making as a web developer in Bangkok.
Wow you must be a rich, big fat American idiot.
Not all poor people are dumb farmers that live in mud huts located in the middle of no where.

.. the moment Bit Torrent was commercialised and started playing with the big TV guys this was bound to happen. I'm just surprised it took so long.
Malicious software re-packaging is a lame excuse too.

Hi Con! I know you read Slashdot by the way, this one was for you!
So your suggestion is that villagers should be poor farmers and not even be allowed the chance to become anything else?
