Direct3D is probably more advanced but OpenGL is better based purely on portability. I don't care if my graphics look better or it is "easier" to program in Direct3D.
I want a bigger customer base, I want MORE customers and I want MORE MONEY.
This isn't 1995 with its "Sorry please download IE to view this page" BS. This is 2007!! Get with the program! Portability, interoperability and what operating system the customer wants to run your programs on is important.
We already use c++ for the majority of games why vendor lock it with a Microsoft only libraries?
The last thing I want is "Your game looks awesome but I won't buy it because it doesn't run on my system.."
Of course, the licenses are not free. And, to a large extent, Microsoft is bowing to the European Commission, which decreed the company must make the interfaces public so rivals can compete on what they claim will be a more level playing field.
Competitor, "I'd like a copy of your API specs please!":D
Microsoft, "Sure that'll be $10 Million"
Competitor, "Here you go!"
Microsoft, "uhhh sorry I meant $20 Million.."
Competitor,:(
I think one reason no one wants to port to a Linux system and why they don't see a market in it is because THEY don't use a Linux system so why would anyone else?
My whole game programming class (3rd university) is full of windows fanboys, if not most of the industry.
This is going to be the next generation of game developers and they don't care about cross platform at all.
Everyday I have to listen to BS marketing regurgitation about how amazing XNA and C# is that it lets you port your windows code to the xbox 360... wow... That vendor lockin code is... amazing...
Another reason is because they think their code needs to be made open source to be available on a Linux system.
I didn't read the article but I just wanted to comment on my experience in Thailand towards TV violence, blood, gore, etc and where America "might" be heading towards.
In Thailand they have real dead people on the TV with blood everywhere and the corpse in full view but they censor knives, guns, beer, etc in Movies and TV Shows so that it is all pixelated.
If you are watching a football (soccer) match and there is a beer advert behind the goal then the whole goal gets pixelated so you don't even know if your team scored or not!
So for news its OK but for entertainment NO!
Of course I think this is going to differ to America in the future where everything will be censored/pixelated.
I don't know about many of countries but in the UK they're not allowed to show dead bodies on the TV. I wish they would so they could show everyone all those dead people in wars, etc instead of it just being a statistic.
Sometimes I just think some people need the fact hammered home that these are real people on TV.
The thing is that there are so many different ways to interpret the Bible that its hard to say what is or what is not his teachings and then there is always a counter point. So someone who doesn't like something can always come back at you with another quote from the Bible.
For example.
Should gay people be allowed to marry? If no, don't you think you should "Do on to others as they would to you"?
You see my point? If you have two Christians in the room they'll both disagree about something. So they probably are Christians its just they're not *your* type of Christians.
This is his response, but it sounds like some retard on an internet forum...
Dear Gamers and Gamer Publications on the Internet and Elsewhere:
I have been praying, literally, that Take-Two and its lawyers would do something so stupid, so arrogant, so dumb, even dumber than what they have to date done, that such a misstep would enable me to destroy Take-Two. With the filing of this SLAPP lawsuit last week, my prayers are finally answered.
This lawsuit, filed in US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, is, without a doubt, the single dumbest thing I have ever seen any lawyers do in my thirty years of practicing law--while in continuous good standing to do so with The Florida Bar, I might add, the shock radio and video game industry's efforts notwithstanding.
I encourage folks to read Psalm 35, a Psalm of David, which is brilliant in its entirety (since God Himself wrote it), but for those who don't own a Bible or who think their hands will catch on fire if they touch one, here is the salient portion that applies to this lawsuit:
7 For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit,
which without cause they have digged for my soul.
8 Let destruction come upon him at unawares;
and let his net that he hath hid catch himself:
into that very destruction let him fall.
9 And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD:
it shall rejoice in his salvation.
The pit Take-Two has dug for itself will be patently clear next week when I strike back. Oh, and by the way, the entire Take-Two management and board will be gone on March 23, so this pit-digging comes at a very bad time indeed.
Amen, and Praise be to God Almighty, maker of Heaven, Earth, and yes, the maker even video games.
When I was a kid Everquest taught me better spelling skills then the teachers trying to shove the curriculum down my throat and my elitist peers who would mock anyone who didn't perfectly absorb the knowledge handed to them.
Sometimes being a grammar nazi is useful for those of a younger age as long as their not called a "retard"...
Actually, in my experience Windows XP does not delete the files it already copied. However, since it copies files in disk order (rather than alphabetically) it's near impossible to figure out which files were already copied and which were not. One solution if I recall correctly is to use xcopy from the command prompt, which does result in an alphabetical copying process, thereby making it a lot easier to pick up where you left off.
No, no, no..
A user shouldn't have to touch the command prompt. This is why Windows will never be "ready for desktop".
Just joking but I couldn't miss such an opportunity.:D
Well done you found the magic google search terms. When someone needs a "Microsoft Word PDF exporter" the first thing they type is "windows" yes thats exactly what I was thinking at the time... or not.
Of course what I actually googled was "microsoft word pdf" ( yes I did spend time googling it. I wasn't lazy at all that you made out. ) and what came out in January 2006?
Pay for PDF conversion, pay for PDF conversion, pay, pay, pay. Since open office was the only PDF converter I knew of thats what we did. If I knew this program even existed I would have used it.
Your comments are nothing but insulting since I looked as best as I could and got crap.:(
1) when you for copy files to a USB pen and then the USB pen is full. It will display "Can not copy files....its full.." and then delete the files it just copied to that USB pen.
2) If you copy 100 files and then delete one of the files you are about to copy it will cancel the whole operation (although this one has only happened to me twice when copying large amounts of data still could be fixed).
Your problem with the screen resolution is pretty bad for Ubuntu. At the moment everyone is having this problem and I have no doubt that it will be fixed in a future release soon if not even better.
As for this not being a Windows vs Linux article, read t5he summary...I was specifically addressing a claim made in the review - that this release would be good for Windows/OSX users to switch to.
...and why is this claim invalid exactly? Because you are addressing the problems the author is having with the alpha software as what the final product will be like where as the author is talking about the final release being good for windows/OSX users to switch to.
If you get these problems in the final release then you have a point until then lets just wait, ok?
OK now I understand what you mean. As for the differences I don't really know since I am not really a hardcore word processor kind of guy. For me both Office products are just white boxes you can put text and pictures into.
A lot of people complain about the UI of OpenOffice and I would be surprised if they weren't working on it. I think the biggest complaint is that it doesn't have the same consistent UI feel as other applications on the users system. This goes for Linux, Windows and the Mac I believe.
I just wonder if in a few years we're not back at the same stage.. "If only OpenOffice looked like word 2007, etc..".

ACK!!!
Funny that they fund open source then.
We're using both products in the office
One job is a hospital in ASP.NET, C#.NET and Microsoft AJAX and we do other stuff in PHP and different javascript packages available.
In normal Microsoft style.. Want to something generic? Easy. Want something more customized and specific? ahh..
The development time on the Microsoft stuff takes a lot longer, but I am not sure if thats because of learning time or not.
They opened up some protocols for Microsoft Office server 2007 which you have to pay mega bucks for.
That is not opening up file and printer servers, administration services, etc.
Anyone know what these 325 so lines look like or are? Any links?
DUDE! He doesn't use an ipod he uses itunes. He was copying his music to itunes. He was not buying music from itunes.
Wheres the disclaimer that it doesn't work on itunes? Sure we at slashdot know what that disclaimer means but normal people don't.
Whats to say they didn't add the disclaimer after he bought the music. Maybe it was his complaint that added the disclaimer in the first place.
The article only mentions Office Interoperability with Office Server 2007 (?) and doesn't mention the SMB protocol or anything else.

Lets make them immunize people too! They could be a free drug factory for third world countries.

Why does this have anything to do with religion?
I'm from the UK so I only get to read news but to spread ignorance and use religion to get his own way.. This guy is going to hell if it exists.
You obviously don't understand Thompson.
There is Thompson's way and.... well thats it unless you want to be involved in a lawsuit.

Let me clarify about the copying.
I mean:
1) when you for copy files to a USB pen and then the USB pen is full. It will display "Can not copy files....its full.." and then delete the files it just copied to that USB pen.
2) If you copy 100 files and then delete one of the files you are about to copy it will cancel the whole operation (although this one has only happened to me twice when copying large amounts of data still could be fixed).

Correction Alpha Release, Betas haven't started yet. :D
Feisty Fawn is in Alpha 5 and in a few weeks will go into Beta testing (Real beta testing not Google Beta Testing).
I'll let you know when it passes RFG testing (Ready for grandma).
