the Adinistration wants to switch from Mac's to Windows, but the Sys Admin's want to stay
with Apple.
Why not have both apple and wintel hardware? (1) In the real world, not every OS may do what you want. My experience is in a mixed hardware environment (windows, apple, unix), all of whose OSes have been needed to help solve research problems. (2) Would the administration be interested in running linux on the apples? That software is free. And the idea behind open source software is fundamentally what Academia is about. However, it is true linux isn't quite up to mainstream support. (3) Having and using both types of hardware, instead of discarding just all the apple machines and "doing what everyone else is doing", can serve as a reminder of "freedom of thought", which in part means to me avoiding getting stuck on relying one company to provide all your hardware and software solutions.

I thought the CEO said publicly iomega would replace even the out of warranty zip drives that died due to CoD. Well, their customer service said it was my OEM's problem. (Yeah, I know, the classic run-around.) But shame on me if I ever patronize iomega.
In brief, they introduce errors in the table of contents and the data sectors that a typical
audio CD player will just skip over, but most CD-ROM driver software will hang up on. So you can't use your computer
to listen to or to copy the CD.
Maybe this is redundant, but I don't get it. It's the RIAA purposely dumbing down the CD format so the CD can't be read by our too "sophisticated" CD players. It seems to me coming up with a solution here is reverse engineering for interoperability's sake, not "hacking" in violation of copy protection.
It would be a waste of money buying a CD you can't rip.
Actually this development echoes pretty well the attitudes of the movie and television script writers. They want to be given credit that's more representative of their contribution. For example, films "produced by X" are not necessarily scripted by X. They are also interested in getting a portion of profits of the shows/movies shown abroad. As the trend in TV has been toward more news shows and "reality shows", where the players more or less ad lib a script, it could help to leave the writers out in the cold.

And don't forget Homer's
toaster time machine. One sneeze from Homer in the past ended the dinosaurs and make it rain donuts in the alternative present. This points out that the (evolutionary) actions we take in the present can prevent certain possibilities from ever happening (like we haven't already been doing that?) while making others possible.

heh heh, good one. but i have to admit that this post to me seems like a mixed metaphor. by providing its own dvd solution in the absence of industry support, this portion of the linux community is simply acting consistently with republican ideals. (the one i'm singling out here is self-reliance. (not to mention that reverse engineering may be legal.)) accordingly,
couldn't the industry could be more self-reliant to prevent these "renegade" computer users from using dvds than relying on the government to support or actually help them? it would be up to the industry to come up with its own solution, such as regional coding, which is actually in use already.
Like Monopoly, it's better with your own house rules. For example, you don't have to buy the black die, and instead it is rolled for each person during his turn.

Nice, clean redesign -- woohoo! -- but the search function sucks big time. A search for 'opera' resulted in 400 matches.

By this logic, then gun retailers are responsible for committing murder with a weapon? Both are debatable I guess (not meant to be a troll, really.)
