I have mild ADD, and I have seen hyperactivity in children TRIGGERED by video games and the like. True, maybe video games help develop prediction/goal seeking/concentration on the task at hand. But on the flipside, however, they detach you from what's really going on.
Just look at a flock of 8-9 year old boys and you'll see what I mean.
It's too sad that we have to rely on technology for things that are developed naturally in a good environment.
Not to say I haven't duct-taped a runt or two to the tele with his n64 while babysitting...
It's just the reenactment that fills the hyperactivity =)
Which is prob. why the parents call me in the first place.
SETI is the search for extraterrestrial inteligence.
ONE of the many ways of research, is through the seti@home program developed at berkeley a few years ago. But the SETI institute was around LONG before SETI@home was even around.
By "getting electromagnetic radiation" I meant from distances further off then satelites of the earth.
Look around the comments with -1 and 0 and all they talk about is SETI@H.
The simple answer is that we can produce the animal in mass quantities to exploit features, a.la. slavery.
We already cultivate animals and slaughter them for food, but I think that cloning will provide a broader way of dealing with issues such as amount of space a unit animal takes up, etc.
But cloning an extinct animal goes too far.
The whole purpose (arguably) of life is to fufill the place in the gene pool, each life is a test of one specific set, much like brute forcing.
When you add more then one animal to an environment, you get other variables, but that's beyond the scope of my argument.
Now when an animal goes extinct, it means that the entire species couldn't produce enough quality/quantity of offspring and died off.
So why do we want to regenerate a species that's already died off.
This goes too far.
Furthermore, there's the entire discussion of humans and fufilling their in the genetic pool.
Why does our cloning technology have to push soo far as to directly effect the life cycle of a species other then our own.
This is a very imerialistic act on the part of humans, another instance probably revolving around the grand ole $$$.
But I'm just sitting here for a Genesis, Revalation, or 46+2 machine =)
Let's stop enslaving ourselves to technology, exploiting our human design.
Let's cherish the technology, use it as a resourcce, and make something of our lives.
I think the internet is going to change the democratic process in the future, but after MANY reforms. As of this moment, senators and such make vital decisions based on e-mail. Email has become a gigantic part of the democratic process.
I think that some sort of ID authentication process must come up in the next few years if official business will be done online. If they currently made a website for people to vote it would be "wildly inacurate". We must realize that the anonimity of the internet also attributes against the society democracy was built for.
I also have this deep i'm-a-true-techie-this-hurts feeling when I see another lamer get a new Prefab. IBM clone and AOL. I dont feel bad because I'm jealous of their 1ghz Athlon, I feel bad that the market dictates what goes and what dies off... But I also feel good that tech. is taking off, because it used to be an un-recognized tool of a "talented-tenth" of our society.
This "talented-tenth" still exists, but "normal people" also have the opportunity to explore the web.
As for the president eventually making speeches online, I think that's a great idea. If Nixon hadn't started speeches with TV, where would we be now? As long as we can confirm it's the president (becoming increasingly difficult with complex technology),
The democratic process will definately change during the next 30 years.
If the way this is implemented allows Joe Shmoe access to information, it may be able to be used legally.
I think that it's the responsibility of the rendering process, not the host of the information. I may have illegal things on my HDD, but it's up to the drive motor to get it spinning, my IDE interface to access it, and my monitor/speakers to display it.
This is not an encryptive process if it is losless and renderable by anyone.
I think the internet and technology age is going to seriously screw with the "democratic" process.
The moment one company/artist/whatever complains about "copyright infringment",etc. the gov't mandates a law about it.
The pentium pro has been a 36 bit architecture for years. Why can't they use the same archetecture for compatibility on the next generation chips?
Intel is backing itself up into a corner with the new 64 bit chips coming up. AMD's new chip is planned to be 64/32 bit compatible.
So in a few months from now, People can either use AMD, or stray to another, faster architecture with software already developed for it i.e. alpha, etc.
It all has to do with software availability, user friendliness, money, and speed.
What next, are they going to ban paintings from the internet.
What if an artist WANTED to be on napster (and it was allowed in the contract)? Banning unpaid songs from napster, without the artists consent, is just as "bad" as allowing
One question for Lars: If it's not about the money, what's it about? Musicians like coverage, or money, or both.
It's ALL about money. It's too sad to see that the art has to be restricted.
MPEG4 Has structured audio! This means that eventaully we will be able to have most any content within one file, with a GIGANTIC header. Instrument definitions and loops, so bands can mix music directly into mp4 from the studio, and you can remix it at home (kinda like DVD with the track info, eh?). This will create incredibly small files, but the compatibility would be strange as far as studios using it. e.g. A band fitting a guitar loop through the end of a song, with a predefined volume map... aww yeah!
Maybe eventually we can have a file format with a codec built into it, that could be compiled on a virtual machine.
My idea for interpolation. So you have two values, and the only thing you know is what the values are, and where they are on a scale
1......4 --------
If you have a predefined size Sine wave, you can interpolate through without having to worry about linear/logarithmic error. You just slide the wave over until it fits just dandy.
What ever happened to MP3 layer 4? I'm assuming that the MP4 works on the same principle: removing the worst (to an extent, measured/based on kbps) frequencies that could be reattained through human interpolation, a kickin stereo, or your mp3 software. It is nice, however, to see an MPEG audio layer with an optional video portion.
Good point, only +-5% of our oceans have been discovered, even though they are supposedly our point of origin. Making the oceans a liveable environment will be good.
Sometimes I wonder why the hell NASA spends so much frigging money, when what we need is social progress (one result of our capitalist world).
Then I remember: Science is an continual process of theories and tests. This may define science as something grossly inefficient and imperfect, and it is. However, this our only way of finding out why things work, we are only human.

SETI!=SETI@HOME
GREEN BANK!=ARECIBO
Geesh!
This telescope isn't even for getting electromagenetic radiation, let alone part of the SETI clan.
RC5 will be cracked!
So what? I have a neural net somewhere on a 5 1/4"
SETI should return results!
That's what I'm talkin 'bout
Why do we clone?

Welcome to the Armed Robot 2000. WOPR anyone?
"how about a nice game of CS?"
I don't think the intent of this post was to have everyone dust off their old Pentium jokes and get moderated up =)
Those jokes are as old as the hair on my palms.
Strap this guy into a space suit, give him some LSD, and a rocket filled with fuel, he'll return the Mars lander in no time flat.
"normal people" are in no requisite of joining the "talented-tenth".
In our "new age of technology", a lot of people are getting man-handled by hardware and software companies that make it easy to learn.
This is good, but again, they are in no immediate requisite of advancing.
The info was covered up by a "Black Box"? Sounds like a new movie!
Oh, BTW, Stop the MPAA while you're at it.

I see what you mean, I was however referring to it's great expanse and possibilities. mp4 will kick even s3ms arse.

Yeah, with mpeg, you can discard as much as you want and leave that up to the interpolation engine.

Ever since I was a young boy-
I played EpicPinball (tm)
From DeepSea down to Andriod
I must have played them all
I even bough the trilogy
From my local mall
That dumb, capitalist company
Sure has lost their balls

Why solar powered? How much power does it actually consume? Just strap a few dry cells on the puppy and viola! Large scale!
