  1. Yeah. "80% of your paycheck" just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it.

  2. Oh, I remember those. My family never had nice cameras, though. If a camera had something like that, it was inevitably a "no, that's not a toy, don't touch that" item.

  3. Ah, yes. The good old shutter timer scramble. Inevitably, there were two options:

    1. The timer is too short: Press the button and run to get in the shot before it goes off. Hope you don't accidentally bump the camera.
    2. The timer is too long: Press the button and calmly get in the shot. Wait the remaining 60-90 seconds, smiling awkwardly because you don't know *exactly* when the likely capacitor-based timer is going to fire.

Of course, this was the situation in point-and-shoots. Then, as now, a good SLR would have a remote shutter release of some kind. (Possibly wired.)

It doesn't matter if it gets killed in the Senate or vetoed. Sure, the veto will have more prominence in the news cycle, but the House passing a bill that gets killed in the Senate will still make the rounds in the relevant publications. (Here we are talking about it, right?) There are many ways for them to signal their agenda to the voters. This one in particular has the advantage of putting them on record as supporting whatever the policy is while forcing their opponents to go on record opposing it.

Well, they know that. It's the same as when the Republicans put bills on Obama's desk to repeal the ACA. They knew he'd veto it and that they wouldn't be able to override it. It's about signalling to the voters "this is what we'll be able to do if you put us in charge." It's not a new phenomenon.

"500 times $50" is doable, depending on your venue. (A hotel will give you a break on programming space if you can fill rooms.) But it's still pretty shoestring. But I can't imagine that being anywhere near enough to hold an outdoor event with minimal existing infrastructure, let alone doing doing it for five times as many people with only 66% more budget.

  16. I wish I had mod points for this.

The "clarification" idea is a good idea, but it also misses the point. People want to be able to fix typos without manually copying, deleting, recreating, pasting, and editing the tweet. Hell, the "edit" button could just be a shorthand for deleting and recreating the tweet. Fixing typos on twitter is far more annoying than it needs to be. 18. Unlocked Bootloader on Ask Slashdot: Are Custom Android ROMs Still a Thing? · · Score: 5, Informative

It's not impossible. It just requires doing your research before you buy. There are two things you need to look for.

    1. Unlockable Bootloader

This is challenging because many OEMs will require you to go through a bunch of steps intended to make doing so as difficult as possible (beyond what is needed for data security.) There have been instances of OEMs just outright lying when it comes to bootloader unlockability. And of course, even phones that are to be unlockable have that disabled from some carriers. (Verizon, especially. Even Pixel devices can't easily have their bootloaders unlocked when purchased through Verizon.)

    2. Community Support

LineageOS and xda-developers are good place to start. Popular flagship phones are more likely to have good community support around them if they're unlockable. Of course, you can always try to build AOSP for your own device, but community support will still be invaluable as most OEMs play pretty fast and loose with releasing their GPL code. (It's often difficult to get a fully working AOSP build with that the OEM gives you.)

I've found the value of the NES Classic and SNES Classic is for people who aren't particularly technically inclined (and won't be setting up RetroPie) and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars getting a Switch or Wii U but still have nostalgia for NES and SNES games. It's a dead simple system. If you can operate a Bluray player, you can operate a NES Classic.

The "not surprising" bit comes from the acknowledgement that there probably aren't that many such people out there.
