  1. Re:There's wind in them thar.... oceans? on Offshore Windpower To Potentially Exceed US Demand · · Score: 1

In a round-about-way petroleum is an "electricity storage technology" just like hydrogen, lithium, etc... Any chemical process that produces electricity is a battery. It just so happens that its currently more efficient to burn petroleum to do mechanical work directly then to first convert it into electricity. I'm not sure if non-consumable batteries (lithium/super capacitors) will ever be able to compete with biologically derived fuels. 3. Re:Flash is evil... on Saving Journalism With Flash and Java · · Score: 1

Wrong, flash had an already sustainable community and place on the web before youtube. Youtube and other video sites were just another expression of the flash platform as a whole. HTML5 won't kill flash because javascript isn't powerful enough, or at least the apis exposed with javascript aren't powerful enough to implement some of the trickier solutions being created in flash. For video, flash was the only answer at the time because no one wanted to wait for real/window media/quicktime to implement the features that publishers thought they deserved. On flash they could make what they wanted. That's the difference between a platform and a final product, and its the reason flash will always have a place on the web. Removing flash from the online landscape is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

There is approximately 13,000 ZJ worth of geothermal energy, and when that runs out what happens? On the other hand the earth get smacked with about 3,850 ZJ of energy per year from the sun. Do we really want to extract all that geothermal energy from our core or do we want it to just let it slowly leak out the way it currently is? What are the ramifications of opening up bigger seams to get at that heat? I understand it would take a long time to extract that heat, but it appears to be an irreversible process?

Nope. You've made your point that there obviously needs to be some sort of regulation around starting a new school, but that doesn't make it a high risk environment from a monetary perspective.

"But for-profit education leads down the same path as for-profit health care in the US. No one wants that. Well, doctors and teachers do, bit patients and students don't." I don't entirely agree with that just because health care is such a high risk environment with enormous expenses. I think we could do pretty well with a voucher system mixed in with public schools. There's such a high barrier to entry for starting a private school these days and vouchers could really help mix it up. Of course the state should still subsidize public school facilities to ensure all regions have a public school option, but the salaries and operations of a school should be placed on the burden of competing for voucher dollars.
