  1. Re:monopolies on Is Apple Turning Into the Next "Evil Empire"? · · Score: 1

I am amazed to hear someone say that MP3 (an extremely lossy data compression format) is better Quality than the iPods MP4a Format(based on the lower
      loss AAC Data compression format)
As a teacher in Professional Audio I had a number of my students claim that their MP3 players were "as good as an iPod" especially at high data rates.
so in class we set up a blind test, several MP3 players (including some that were quite expensive and considered to be the best available) all running high data rate MP3's, an iPod, and a CD Player.
The same tracks were played across all devices in a random selection, the only person who knew which was which was myself.
Consistently the 'best' sounding tracks were equally spread between the iPod and the CD player, where as all of the MP3 players were noticed to be a lower quality sound.
And this was from even from the students who previously claimed that they could not tell the difference between their MP3 player and a CD., In the blind test, they always picked the CD as better and their MP3 player as a worse sound, irregardless of the sample rate used for the Mp3 rip.
The first and most noticeable complaint about MP3 sources was the audio compression, noticeable, in the same way that it is noticeable on Metallica's last album.
Then the sampling artifacts became noticeable, especially when compared back to back with the CD, where as the iPod, even played back to back with the CD was much harder to distinguish

Yes , as your hoax-slayer article says there is no point to point speed checks on the M5 or M7 , however the Hume Highway/Freeway (M31) is one which to quote a little further down the article you sent me to , "Point to point speed camera systems do exist and are used in some areas of Australia" .

sorry , Im from Victoria in Australia and our eTags work on the NSW toll roads as well as the 2 different companies running toll roads in Our state .
Cars that dont have tags are Identified by their Rego Numbers and fines are automatically sent out , and have been for quite a few years now , so this "new technology to read your registration plates and bill you" is old news here .
Between Melbourne and Sydney there is about 1000Km of (mostly) freeway with cameras mounted all along the way .
these are tied to a computer system that not only does point to point checks to see if you are speeding but also identifies trucks and compares photos of the drivers to check that they have not been driving for more hours continuously than they are allowed to .

Windows came with the box , the box can't be bought without it ,therefore it is 'free'.

The Intergalactic Laxative - Words & Music by: Donovan Leitch - 1973

I was impressed like everyone,When man began to fly,
Out of earthly regions,To planets in the sky.
With total media coverage,We watched the heros land,
As ceremoniously they disturbed the cosmic sand.

In awe with admiration,We listened to the talk.
Such pride felt they,Such joy to be upon the moon to walk.
My romantic vision shattered,When it was explained to me,
Spacemen wear old diapers in which they shit and pee.

Oh, the intergalactic laxative,Will get you from here to there.
Relieve you and believe me,Without a worry or care.
If shitting is your problem,When you're out there in the stars,
Oh, the intergalactic laxative will get you from here to Mars.

They don't partake like you and I,Of beefy burger mush.
Their food is specially prepared to dissolve into slush.
Absorbed by multi-fibers in the super diaper suit,
Otherwise the slush would trickle down inside the boot.

Oh, the intergalactic laxative,Will get you from here to there.

You may well ask now what becomes of liquid they consume.
A pipe is led from penis head to a unit in the room.
The water is recirculated,Filtered for re-use.
In case of anti-gravity - Pee gets on the loose.

    Oh, the intergalactic....... to Mars.

Wherever man has conquered,On the quest for frontiers new,
I'm glad that he's always had to do the number one and two.
It makes it all so ordinary,Just like you and me,
To know the greatest heroes,They had to shit and pee.

Windows Mobile is #1 in usability. Sorry, I have to disagree. I have a Motorola a100 and a windows mobile device that my work forced on me. The WM device crashes at least twice a day, takes twice as long to fire up, twice as long to do anything and chews through its battery in no time flat. and if you use the touch screen keyboard or 'handwriting recognition' rather than the keys under the screen it will crash within 15 minutes. Its tendency to load a program and then keep it running in the background is one of the stupidest design concepts ever devised.Basically it has turned a quite good unit (on spec) into a useless waste of time. I have recently tried to find a suitable phone to replace my A1000,but all the phones I look at are hampered with WM. as an aside even the phone salesmen I speak to quietly concede that WM5 and 6 are dogs and none of them would spend their own money on a phone with either of these systems on it.

  11. the most important point to me is..... on 100 Million iPods · · Score: 1

    The quality of the sound.
MP3 is a terrible format, yes I know a lot of people tell me,"it's alright, I use the highest rate available", but it still sounds like excrement, with nasty high frequency artifacts that make my teeth jangle and destroyed dynamics.
Seriously I was in a nightclub a few weeks ago and they had installed an MP3 based music system and apart from all the high frequency narkiness that was giving me a headache the lack of dynamics made the resultant mix of songs so BORING that even the dedicated clubbers were getting turned off.
Apple on the other hand worked a bit harder on their codec and came up with something that did not destroy the music as much.
As I once wrote before try this test (With thanks to Paul D. Lehrman, of Mix Magazine and a teacher of audio).
take a mono wave file, convert it to both MP3 (any rate you choose), and 'MP4a'(Apples format).
Now convert both of these back to .wav. Using your favourite wave editing program. invert the original wave file and then add it to each of the converted and reconverted files.
For a perfect conversion there should be total cancellation, that is, to give an example, if you add the inverted wave file to the original wav file there will be nothing left over.
My experience is that the apple codec will leave a few specks on the graph but nothing more than a few clicks and pops will be audible.
The Mp3 codec will leave you with enough of the song behind that you will be able to recognise the track and even sing along with it.
Paul Lehrman from mix magazine goes into this in more detail and someone else may be kind enough to provide a pointer to the exact article.
