  1. Re:high frequency trading needs to be outlawed any on Ex-Goldman Sachs Programmer Found Guilty · · Score: 3, Informative

Very true. The concept of value investing has been long lost to the market. If any of you are traders, or if you are looking at getting into trading, I recommend checking out the book Margin of Safety: Risk-Averse Value Investing Strategies for the Thoughtful Investor by Seth A. Klarman.

I read this book, and after was astounded with how true it rings, not because of the money I earned (I don't even invest), but because of the insights it provides into the greediness and irrational nature of the market.

To summarize the book, buys stocks based on what you think their value is, which actually requires doing a value analysis on the stock and buying when it is undervalued, and selling when it is overvalued, as to just getting sucked into the latest get rich quick stock or bond at the height of its balloon, only to have it pop.

Good luck finding a copy under $500 dollars. This is a rarity. It was once deemed the most stolen book from libraries in the world by the NYT.

But I may have seen it available on torrents before :)

  2. Kindof Summary on X Particle Might Explain Dark Matter & Antimatter · · Score: 3, Interesting
    Alright, so IANAPP, but, FTA:

Equal amounts of X and anti-X were created in the Big Bang, and then decayed to lighter particles. Each X decayed into either a neutron or two dark-matter particles, called Y and . Every anti-X converted to an anti-neutron or some anti-dark matter.

But the hypothetical X particle would rather decay into ordinary matter than dark matter, so it produced more neutrons than dark matter. Anti-X preferred decaying into anti-dark matter, and so produced more of it.

Bold emphasis added is mine. Does this theory explain why "particle X" would rather decay into ordinary matter? Isn't that begging the question? How is that any different than moving to the larger set of all mass, and just saying "Hypothetical universe X would rather form more ordinary matter than dark matter". I understand they may be foregoing the DiffyQ's that perhaps stand behind their assertions for the word "rather" to provide for the layman, but this premise kills the theory for me unless there exist math/science/evidence/a reason besides the word "rather for this article.

Isn't not allowing them to bill via pay-as-you-go regulation as well? I am not a free-market idealist, I understand that it is not a perfect laissez faire system, but if ISPs started switching to this model, what is to stop an ISP from just doing things as SOP (flat-rate) and making hand over fist when all the streamers, gamers, downloaders jump ship of the ISPs bilking them from the new model?

Unless they all collude and the FTC (with the actual teeth) doesn't step in, or if it is decided that it isn't colluding by the govt. if they all go to this model, well, either way its pretty gay. I think the fact of the matter is big-business (telcos, media) has the politicians too in-debted via contributions for any argument to matter. It will just be a continual decline in the quality of service we as consumers receive, as the rest of the world surpasses us here in the US. Their might be another veil on it, but we can never divorce the pig as long as corporations can donate money to politicos like they currently do.

I have a 1090T in my main home/dev machine. It is excellent. Gaming, video encoding, whatever. Combined with a boot SSD and 6GB of DDR3, couldn't be happier with the system. Beats the hell out of a standard consumer box, and for the $300 I paid for the 1090, it spanks Intel's offerings (at least did at the time, probably still does). I will say though that consumer boxes are catching up pretty quickly, and their price/performance seems to have plummeted enough to compete with independent system builders (still don't get the feel good feeling).

If your building a new box with an X6, make sure the BIOS supports 'em. When I bought mine along with a new motherboard, I didn't check, turned out it only supported quads out of the box. I was in such a rush to see the CPU in action, I went to best-buy, bought a machine that had an X4, put the X4 in my new board so I could flash the board to support X6, and then swapped the CPUs back out. Desperate geek times call for desperate geek measures.

Note: I didn't return the X4 Best Buy machine, but was seriously tempted to :)

Check Google Trends, look at 'WikiLeaks', then look at 'Assuage'. The powers that be know how to coddle the masses, give them a drama piece, mention some sex, and they will go wild. The character assassination has worked, not because they took down Assuage with repeated 'turrorist', 'think of da children', 'hes a spy' ramblings, but because to people, Assuage is WikiLeaks. Listen to Eric Holder. Listen to Hillary. Their fucking power struggle for the spread of the plutocracy is threatened by freedom of information, see how violently they are reacting. In my experience, those who are guilty and have something to hide will act the most defensive and get extremely belligerent when somebody tries to expose and correct said bad behavior. Enter the US Government.

Do you fear your government? You should, but it didn't always have to be this way. It used to be that you were the government. There was at least some voice. Now, nameless and faceless pockets full of international money control the puppet. We've seen it in the elections. We go from extreme conservative to extreme democrat president, and its more or less the same. Less freedom. Hell, the latest white-house has honored FOIA request about as 'great' as his predecessor. Oldboss, newboss, that gig.

This is just a rant. But I am sure all of you that come here for the insightful comments (this is not one) are tired of listening to the fucking talking heads in the mainstream media reiterate the same points. 'He's a terrorist', 'He should be charged', 'He this' 'He that'. How about the talk about the fucking cables themselves, how about they talk about how this is similar to the pentagon papers, how about they talk about why the government is reacting so violently to this in light of the fact that these cables are mostly common knowledge amongst the powers that be and anybody that knows anything. I know why they don't talk about it. Because they drink the fucking coolaid. Or maybe they're co-conspirators. Or both. Fuck it. Check off this citizen on another bullshit watch list.
