    Is it just me or does it seem to you also that the reply is lacking some conclusion and basicly just states a lot of things in random order? Its pretty clever though, since he uses the same tactic again. He implies how intelectual property is so much important and then he raises his concerns about GPL, without making any conclusions.

    But the problem that no one really mentioned is that GPL is protecting my intelectual property. Its protecting it in the exact way I want it to be protected and its protecting it so well, that Microsoft cannot steal it! And thats why they cry out loud. They see all the revenues lost, they could gain if they would be able to steal my intelectual property. And thats makes them mad.

    Considering my DSL modem has fixed IP at which it can be accessed from local subnet and it has set and unchangeable login/passwd to connect in the device to change its configuration or do whatever and all you need to access it is access to local telephone central (which is out of premises) and laptop. It's maybe too easy way how to get behind my company's firewall...

    One really wonders then what kind of other devices are so easily accessible, and what all they let you do. This case with the CALRS system really scares me. And the only level of security there is obscurity.

    Hi, I have spent a lot of time searching for job on US search engines and read lots of these job descriptions and I have pretty good idea how to accomplish your task. A lot of companies have a strong problem to find someone willing to travel more than 100 miles from his home to work. So most search engines include the option of travel.

    So, apply for a job at consultant type of company and emphasise you don't mind to travel 100% of time. Such companies as computer associates, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and other are constantly looking for this kind of employees.

    You might not end up with constant employment at once place in europe, but you might work 6-24 months per project in single place and then move to further project at some other place in Europe or at other place in the world.

    Well, you definitely don't go, hack their site, get the employees SSN and then show them how stupid they are. Thats a way how to face charges, but... you can do it right.

    2. Contact the manager of the site with your concerns about their solution's security.
    3. Ask them for a permission to demonstrate the weakness.
    4. Then go to the site and show them all these breaches, preferably with one of their managers always present to ANY access of their site.
    5. Collect consultation fees :)

    Well, I admit that we used to do this kind of stuff at reports of compulsory reading in the literature class at high school. After all, who had the time to read 30 books a year of the crap they considered 'classic literature'. And then even write a 1000+ words on it with basic contents and your own opinion about the book.

    I used to just get someone's work, read it 2 times and then I wrote it down with my own words and my 'opinion' at the bottom. Well, its true that some of the students were a bit pissed when I used to get A for the copy, while they got B or even C for the original :)

    Well, there is a lot of difference between saying to your employer: "Hey, I don't agree with your contract because of this and that and I will sign it if you will change it somehow so it would fit my needs." and giving them a piece of paper that they already have heard about, they know other employers have signed without much harm and that their lawyers have already actually pre-aproved this document like acceptable, but worth to avoid.

    I think that in such case when the employer sees a person they REALLY want, they will definitely consider to sign it. Thats how business goes. When you want something, you have to make it as easy as possible for the other party to accept it.

    It seems that Slashdot is the only news site, where you can first read the comments and only THEN have maybe a little chance to get to the contents of the article also when the targeted site is not slashdoted anymore.

    Have you ever thought about a cache system for all the links similar to what google provides?

  11. Its too early... on The Open Sourcing of Oracle · · Score: 4
    I have read the article and I think its too early to talk about this. Even PostgreSQL which is now slightly ahead of MySQL in heading to the market where Oracle actually operates... (MySQL is going to completely different market!) ... is far from what Oracle offers.

    But databases are NOT the point. Oracle is offering complete solutions. Its not just the database, its complete application server, soon also development environment, its CRM and ERP and everything tightly integrated and cooperating. As far as I would like to, I don't see open source products even started on this line.

    For some parts of what Oracle offers you have open source alternatives, though still few years behind in the development, but there are whole parts of Oracle solutions where there are no alternatives in Open source whatsoever.

    And I will tell you when will be the right time for Oracle to start to worry about opensourcing its database. At the point when first bank of the world top10 will adopt ANY open source database. Not sooner, but not even later.

    Of course any opinions expressed here are just mine and mostly likely different from these of Larry Ellison or anyone else in the company :)

    Well, let me tell you... you don't want to see the code. Do you remember Mozilla? They wrote it again from scratch because everyone refused to go on from the point netscape code was in.

    Most of comercial products are in this stage and the companies will think twice before releasing the code just to be exploited and thrown out. The only one who would benefit at this point are competitors.

    We are following the open source movement kind of closely at Oracle and I am sure that if there would be a way how to gain any profit by open sourcing any of the great bunch of products, Oracle would do it immediatelly.

    Of course any opinions expressed here are just mine and mostly likely different from these of Larry Ellison or anyone else in the company :)

    Well for start I would not mind to find this subway station. I moved from Prague, CZ to Bay Area, US and I am really missing subway and public transport basicly. :)

    But yes, I like payphones. And when you find them here, they usually have also headphones and the buttons with numbers, thats kind of surprise for me. Its not what I was used to back home...

    I think that the REAL reason, why he wants to claim the moon is that he wants to revert back to old weapons like catapults, yet keep their effectivenes also in these days. Wouldn't it be cool to have a place for your castle where you don't need building permit, have plenty of rock lying around and can use catapults as ultra modern weapons?

    Did you also read "Moon is harsh Mistress" from R.A.Heinlein as he obviously did?

    Apache is great software and I fully agree with this, but it does not put aside the problem that in versions 1.3.x and earlier it had serious problems with multiprocesor machines. Go and read some of the documentation. These problems were largely addressed for the new 2.0 code and I suppose that the 2.0.16beta works cool on these SUNs :)

    I am not sure if you got the point. Its not "Am I good looking or not?" Its about being *HOT*. Well, maybe you have different opinion, but according to mine, "mature sized normally attractive lady in her 40ties" is not what I would call hot. And unlike you I was browsing the site at regular basis and I found that these girls with charm and expression and well taken pictures with good resolution have usually higher scores than these half naked dolls.

    Actually all the knowledge would really not help you much with the choice of software here. Both Apache and MySQL have known issues running on multiprocesor machines. So basicly, when they would run REAL(tm) software like Oracle 11i suite over 8i rdbms, I would suppose that this Sun would by no question be faster by magnitude, but...

    Thats kind of a way how to meet consumer demands. The only think that strikes me here is... Why do I never read in news: "Ford and GM has worked together to limit speed of their cars 10 miles above the highway limit to help drivers avoid tickets for speeding."

    Is the real reason that no one would buy such cars? If nothing else could be called monopoly abuse, this surely is. No other company may afford to limit features and introduce new bugs "to drive users away from something". Thats simply arrogant.

    You are obviously on drugs. If you think that War between US and China or Russia could end in different scenario than complete annihilation of this planet, you had to came from moon yesterday or maybe you were kept under propaganda of US media for quite a long time.

    Do you think, you fool, that if these nukes would not exist, US would not attack already? There were nuclear tests going for quite a long time on BOTH sides and experts from BOTH sides were observing them, you can be sure about this. What do you think all these agreements about stopping these tests are all about?

    No, actually what I think is that the "cowardy" on the side of US will continue and after Hong-Kong will China get also Taiwan and others. And you know why? Because US >do care about their peopleAnd to these who mentioned the case with refueling USSR plane that landed in Alaska... well, what for would be good to take this single pilot hostage? No one in USSR would EVER care and the pilot would be left on his own. After all it was a soldier. They would most likely wanted the plane back tho.

    Well before you will shoot all these stupid phrases again, think a bit more.

    Well, its maybe a big deal for you, but for example in Czech Republic there would be not a single campus network if not for students activities. Most of these I know, are designed, projected, installed and operated entirely by students, together with all the legalese and permitions. Just with some help from the admins of local university, through which they get the connection usually. And of course thank to grants... no money, no goodies.. :)

    I work for a company that has close ties with a recruitment agency so I have good news about their work. And they recruit for SuSE branch in our country (CZ). Also few of my friends were used to work for them earlier.

    From what I know, SuSE used to pay really good salaries here to quality guys (some of them long time kernel contributors). But at some point there came a change. I've heard some rumors about exchange in management.

    Since then the recruiters complain all the time that SuSE wants Linux professionals for below average salaries. This would not be that bad as that they are (since what kind of people they employed earlier) incredible picky about the people. Its hell to find someone who would work for SuSE here, since these guys would get anywhere 2 times more.

    So it seems to me like SuSE management come to conclusion that their expenses are too high and that its mostly in the HR, paying people too much. And you can imagine that in US are salaries WAY TOO HIGH when German manager consider them. So they just decided to shut US branch and for every US guy they get easy several russians with good english skills :)

    If Apple would be as fierce in litigation over look and feel 10 years ago we might not need to deal with these fscking M$ Windows. :)

    BTW It seems like the highest time for M$ to steal another design somewhere, this one starts to be fairly old. And seems that their hype about 3D controls is just so they could wait till someone shows a good one and then give a proof how long THEY were developing this stuff.

    Maybe from inside it seemed so to you and mostly due to propaganda of US media (yes, since in rest of world they ended with most of propaganda, US still keeps the high level inside for their citizens), but from outside hardly anyone thinks that. Most of european countries are more liberal and keep freedom for their citizens than US might even dream to be. And I would say that especially during last 30 years you waved goodbye to a lot from your freedoms.

    If you really wanna live in liberal country, you should try Netherlands. And if there is still some patriotism left in US, then its definitely not on racional basis.
