Good luck living without Java, OpenOffice (or MS Office, I assume if you are boycotting Sun then MS was on the list long ago), or any other tech from Sun.
Not only would it be easy enough to simply choose another format, but I don't see how it would be possible to make iPlayer cross-platform if they continue using a windows media format with windows media DRM.
Even if they were willing to break US (maybe UK too, I'm no expert) copyright law as far as I know there is no way of circumventing windows media DRM in Linux.
In short the problem is currently the use of a format that cannot technically or legally be played on any platform except windows. All of the "work" in the world won't overcome that, unless perhaps they send the SAS to storm Redmond. On the other hand, as it has been pointed out BBC doesn't own the rights to a lot of the stuff they play, and most copyright holders aren't going to let them go sticking it on the internet in an unencumbered format.
So short of someone developing cross platform DRM (or separate DRM solutions for the various platforms) this just plain isn't going to happen.
Solution: IP Reform
Thats because it isn't the Court's job to legislate. If all legislation were required to be approved by the supreme court, not only would the balance of power suddenly disappear completely, but the court would never have time to hear actual cases.
Even though it might be four years before the law is overturned, thats because it takes four years to decide what to do with someone who supposedly broke that law. In other words the Supreme (or any other) court gets to regulate the application of the law, not the existence of it.
Thats why this case was important. National security letters attempted to circumvent judicial review by placing a gag order on their recipients. As pleased as I am by the outcome, I am not surprised. This ruling wasn't new, simply an affirmation of a previous ruling on the previous version of the PATRIOT act. And quite frankly anything so blatantly designed to circumvent judicial review has no chance of passing judicial review when someone decides to bitch about it.
Yeah, they predictably drive in heavily populated areas. I guess the idea of transporting a nuclear weapon one way or another doesn't bother me too much, but I wish they would try to keep good track of them.
I don't see too many people using Cisco enterprise network gear for their home network. You can always pick up a Linksys (which is part of Cisco) N router for closer to $100.
For gaming I think you will find the Intel chips to be lacking (although they might play Americas Army at low resolution ok, I'm not really sure). Intels chips are called "Graphics Media Accelerator" for a reason - they're designed for people who want to work on spreadsheets and maybe watch the occasional movie. If you want something good for gaming try to get an nvidia 7600 or higher. Last I looked some of the 17 inch Dells can be configured with a 7900GS, which would make for a pretty sweet gaming laptop, (but would be heavy, hot and low battery life probably). My new Macbook Pro has an 8600M GS which plays Americas Army 2.8 pretty well in Windows at 1440x950 (but doesn't run Linux worth crap yet - stay away if you want Linux).
But yeah, if you want to play anything more graphics intensive than maybe BZ Flag I would recommend nvidia.
I don't get it. What is i, and why does it keep increasing? It looks like it should be money, but as far as I know in jail they mostly don't pay you when they rape you.
Thats actually a pretty good analogy, since if I asked you to write down every thought you have for the next 10 weeks every thought after and including your second thought will be related to writing down the previous thought. Good luck with that.
So if my artificial island can't become a nation, then how can I possibly give my consent to be governed by the United "Nations"? And if I can't then why should I care what the UN has to say?
Play a pirated HD movie (make sure the name is clearly visible when you start the movie, and make sure it is an obviously "torrent style" name) in Linux using unapproved software. See if they actually come after you for it, or if they would rather just pick on the little guys.
Ah, thanks, I've been looking for a good secure password to use on my bank account.
Shhh, don't say anything about "honest compatition", AMD might hear you.

Ok, I can't find it, but I would swear to my nonexistant god that this was posted about a week and a half ago.
Dupe?

He will be prepared. Slashdot is on the internet.
I was going to suggest snipers, but same concept.
play BluRay discs? And does it have DRM so as to protect the consumer?
Or just shoot a hole in it. My cousin has been doing that ever since I married her.
