Not all taxes and health care systems are created equal. Some are better than others. Many of the taxes we now have are outright thievery, as is how our healthcare system (the one Nixon set up) is paid for. The changes proposed by Bush (New Freedom Initiative) and Obama are both going to make things worse, both in costs and in privacy.
People had good healthcare well before our government decided to try and "fix" it. Before our current system many doctors would give patients reduced or free health care depending on their financial situation. Now, no matter what you are charged the maximum amount. Now hospitals and doctors can't do very much without approval of the state, which puts corruption directly into the system (google "certificate of need" and find out what post Blagojevich wanted in Obama's administration).
$31.50 is pretty expensive for a paper which will say that a certain mammal can remember where it has been and can find its way back to that spot, much like most other mammals.

Biden and Obama have both said their policies are not going to be popular but we should just trust them! I seem to remember the last administration saying the same thing. Except now if you don't like their policies you'll be both unpatriotic and racist.

You make a very valid point. Forcing people to do "volunteer" work is ridiculous. It has the opposite effect that is desired. It makes people hate to help others because it is forced. It is counter-productive to force high-school kids to do menial tasks and call it volunteer work.
However, when you have a certain skill set, such as programming or fixing computers, etc... and you help out people who genuinely need it it is extremely rewarding.
I found this out when tutoring people in college. Of course I did it for money, but I found out that I genuinely enjoyed helping people and now do it for free.
I find this call by Obama and Rahm Emanuel towards "national service" very troubling. His constant call for "sacrifice" and "serving" gets me worried.
