What about stem cell research? Growing back teeth, nerve tissue. Maybe we should look at more than gizmos, cars and electronics. Biotechnologies have advanced by great leaps in the last decade.
Tech advances do not need to be consumable goods...
You know those "Hard-Drives-in-a-drawer"? Of course, you need a 5'1/4 bay for them, but I've seen them at 40$(CDN) a piece for the rack. Students would need to provide their own hard drives. They could get a very cheap one +- 100$. Here's what it looks like. I've used them. Very parctical. http://www.anime.net/~gigagon/rh/rh06.htm
That kind of law would be great for companies such as Microsoft. If noone is allowed to publish the flaws in their operating systems, their credibility is maintained. I mean, come on, everyone knows that big corporations run the world, not the govs. If not MS, then some other big corp.
Well, what get me is that even if the cost of manufacturing a CD is much lower that for a cassette, the CD has always been a few dollars more. It's not new technology anymore!!!
Didn't try with this image yet, but can't you mount your iso image as a filesystem? Then you can install from that filesystem or copy it to a real (rw) filesystem.
Really, this kind of functionallity can be achieved with Linux (Free) + old hardware that some companies are just throwing to the garbage or giving to schools.
Since most companies have legacy harware in a stockroom somewhere, a server similar to what MS is proposing could be built for free.
Universities (in Canada for example) have too much financing problems and don't want to fail too many revenue generating students.
In my university, some first year CS teachers had to "ease up" some programming classes because there were too many complaints. It came to the point the the teacher gave the whole program as an assignment, and the student just had to provide two or three algorithm lines. I know, I was a corrector.
A student could also get 9/10 on an assignment even if the code did not compile but looked good anyway.
I told the teacher I was a corrector for that I thought this whole thing was ridiculous. He told me that he would get into bigger problems if he did not do that.
Good thing I finished school before this situation reached an embarrassing level.
If I remember correctly, the price per unit for creating a music CD is a lot lower than the price for creating a tape. However, CD prices were always higher than tape prices. The common Joe still believes that since CD-Audio sounds a lot better and relies more on technology than tapes, it is normal that their are more expensive. This behavior is the main cause of their "problem".
The recording industry has been ripping off the public for so long. It is just normal that the public rip their CDs in return. Play fair and you shall enjoy the Game.

He is right about the fact that lots of people want to understand the Linux movement but fail. Self-called experts are trying to make a buck trying to explain it to suits but they don't really know what's it all about. They don't really know what Windows is as well, but everybody has seen Windows by now and know what it looks like. I guess some people are only talking about Linux because it's a cool thing to talk about.
He raises points like the fact that Linux is free and that the source code is available but to Joe User, does this really matter? Does he understand that this "feature" of Linux makes it better than other OS's because of all those knowledgeable persons that contributed to it? A lot of non-tech type friends I talked to are convinced that they are the ones who should write kernel patches.
There is a lot of media coverage of Linux lately, and a lot of it focuses on the fact that everybody can modify the source code.
Our mission: education! Let people know that they DON'T HAVE to tweak the source code.
Following the JenniCam idea, how about the possibility to use our own URLs instead of or in addition to the JenniCam. As an example, I would like to keep an eye on my cat while at work, so I would include the URL for my cat cam in my/. setup. I load/.'s page, and i see if it broke anything (again). As another example, I would like to see Joe's pic of the day. Can it be done?
Second, for all of us living in the Great White North, that device would be operationnal only 6 months/year. (On a warm year)
I emailed the developpers of the empeg when they started building it. The guy told me that the device would only be operational with temperature above 0C.
I watched it with my girlfriend and both agreed that we didn't laugh because it was so funny but because it was so true. It reminded so much of my old job that sometimes I almost felt like my old boss was going to appear on screen. I finally found a hi-tech company with the right attitude, but this movie reminded me of old times!
BTW, I get more zapped by my car than by my office furniture. Yesterday morning was so bad that my arm was numb for a few minutes. Maybe it's because I shake my butt on the car seat like Micheal Bolton did in the movie!

I admit, I pirated MP3's, but...

As a result, I found out that I bought a lot of albums from bands I've never heard of before. Rammstein for instance. I downloaded 2-3 Rammstein MP3's and I was hooked. I bought 2 albums. I did this for quite a lot of artists and bands.
The recording industry got more money from me since I collect MP3s than ever before. This can't be wrong! (From their point of view)
I mean it IS a cheap medium and could hold a lot of MP3s... It could even hold 3 full audio CDs in binary form. (More if they are less than 75 minutes each...)
This is exactly what we need. Keep the possibility to run Windows so it is not painful to try out Linux.
Most people don't want to switch to Linux because that are scared of not having all their little WinGizmos anymore.
Slowly, people will stop using Windows and start using Linux more and more... After a while, Windows will only be used for games, its true nature since it is a toy anyway.

So now there is an excuse to drive my car when I'm completely pissed!

So they forked Dolly's process but the clone's PID was different?
"Their operating systems just suck!"
The best part of that was the funny grin on his face when he said it...

There is a very fine line between finding some sexual content in the Teletubbies or the Lion King and being sexually attracted by a pre-teen boy.
If he sees a sexual content in those TV shows, it must be really looking hard for it. What a waco...
