It's not a matter of stupid, it's a matter of change. People HATE change. Most people use Windows at home, and that's what they're use to. Switching corporate desktops to Linux is stupid from the user's point of view and always will be. Not until Linux makes more inroads into the home desktop, will work inroads occur imho. Linux has far too many things wrong with it for it to be a sensible user desktop imho, both @ work, and @ home, but more so work. It seems Linux users do not want to acknowledge problems with the operating system, and would rather be aggressive against those who dare criticise it. Abusing those who logically criticise Linux will not win more fans, and doesn't fix the deep, inherent problems that Linux has imho. I wish O/S usage could be accurately tracked, because I would put money on it that Linux desktop usage at home is on the downward move, and has been for quite some time. Windows 7 has been very positively received, and OS X keeps growing from strengths to strengths and attracting more and more users. Now, users who leave Windows, migrate to OS X, rather than Linux. There's a small percentage of users who are not prepared to pay the hardware tax to use OS X and they either stay with older versions of Windows, or migrate to Linux. With the drop in prices for Apple hardware over the years, this is becoming less and less imho. I personally prefer OS X to Windows 7, but that's a personal preference. OS X "just works", and no, I'm no Apple fanboy. I've been quite harsh about Apple in the past, and there are still many things about that company that piss me off.
How to get Linux onto the desktop scene? Quit having tens or 20s variants of applications. Keep it at 1 or 2, kill off the rest, and move those developers to work on the core 1 or 2 applications in harmony. Of course, having your very own Linux application is just an excuse for a pissing contents. It probably won't change. Standardise on one desktop environment (I personally prefer KDE, but it needs a lot of work to get there). Standardise on one package management system (preferably dpkg to be honest). Standardise on lib c versions and keep them stable for at least 5 year chunks, allow backwards compatibily libraries. Don't believe me? Try and install a new version of an app on an older version of Linux, it won't work. And try vice versa, same problem. Try Windows - it does it. That's *what* the users want. Work with software developers to get key software projects ported to Linux, this is *critical*. Microsoft's real strength is MS Office. It forcibly ties workplace usage to the Windows operating system. Windows isn't the monopoly that people think, it's *really* MS Office. Once MS office works on other platforms, and without deliberate problems that Microsoft purposely adds to keep people using Windows, then we'll see more O/S diversification. How will this happen? Well, the US DOJ has to start actually punishing Microsoft, instead of doing S.F.A like it has done for the past 15 years. Of course, Americans, being Americans, will never punish one of their major companies for its sins. There's that Yankee pride you know. Plus, Microsoft adds a fair chunk of profit (i.e. taxes) to the US government, which is frail economy wise.
I could go on and on, but I won't. There are many reasons why Linux will never become popular with the ordinary people.
The problem is very easy to resolve - you should be able to do with it what you want. Imagine if car manufacturers started dictating where you can drive you car. Or TV manufacturers started dictating what shows you can watch. Dictating to owners of DVDs and Blu-rays what they can play the disc on is no different. Governments need to start legislating for the people, and NOT the rich, powerful media companies and others. These others have no legal rights when it comes to influencing the government. It's the *people* who vote governments in, not these others. And the people start to really start telling their governments this, violently if needed (sometimes it's the only way that your message will sink in).
I hope they do fire him and he sues their ass off for wrongful dismissal. The person in question should be able to express his freedom of speech, and freedom of religious choice too. Just because some believe in God etc, doesn't mean that all others must do so as well. Freedom entails others to say "No, I do not believe in [replace with deity of choice]". If others don't like this, tough shit, perhaps they should have some respect for others freedoms and not try and shove their views down everyone else?
Does this result mean that as soon as I give my information to someone else (usually required by law I might add), I lose the right to privacy (If I'm a US citizen at least, although Australia will follow suit shortly no doubt)?
Again, the only way to circumvent this is to simply not buy products that require your name, address and credit card details. Pay cash only. Make the fuckers work hard with visual ID only (and no name etc). Imagine if 90% of US Internet users cancelled their accounts, citing privacy concerns as a result of this wayward decision, from again, incompetent judges who do not live in the real world. You have to pointedly tell your ISP that you are cancelling because you want privacy and do not agree with this latest court decision. You have to make that point very bluntly, shout and yell from the tops of every building. I guarantee you that with the sudden drop in profits, these companies will do 1 of 2 things:
1) raise the price of Internet connections to make up for their losses (and the result of this ill fated act would be that the remaining 10% of subscribed users in my example would also cancel, citing unreasonable costs)
2) rally the government to reverse the decision of the courts, citing loss of income.
ISPs will never do number 2 unless it is in their interest. And the ONLY way to make this happen is for people affected by these silly court decisions to cancel their accounts. Do you really need the Internet? I mean really? Before you say that you really do need the Internet, a question: how did you survive without it before the Internet became popular and readily available? How about reading a book. Watching a movie. Going for a walk. Spending time with loved ones (all of these suffer from over Internet use).
You have no rights today. Only the rich, powerful and large companies have rights. Didn't you realise this? This won't stop, not until the ordinary people get sick of it and take up arms against their oppressor (government). If I have to choose between terrorists and no freedoms, I'll choose the terrorists each and every time. Remember, a terrorist is simply a freedom fighter than a government does not approve of. Nothing more, and nothing less.
Oh yes, it means software purchasers have no rights. None at all. Now is the time to simply not buy software, but pirate it, and openly pirate it. If everyone does it, do you think the government will throw us all in jail? When software sails dramatically plummet, and software piracy goes out of control, then perhaps they'll realise their fuckup. Again, the modern court does not live in the real world, and does not use any common sense at all in its decision making. Down with the courts, because they no longer stand for the average person, but only for the powerful and wealthy.
Yeah, well, the pro right wing nuts would never admit that that sort of thing happens, would they? They're most well off, and above spying on by governments (money does make a difference!). It's always the protesters fault. Never the police. Remember Rodney King? And what's worse, those fucking cops got away with assault, assault & battery, and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as a bunch of internal police rule failures. Did the courts stand up for the poeple? No. If the courts aren't going to stand up for us, then why the fuck should we abide by them?
Remember, remember, the 5th of November, the gunpowder, treason and plot. I know of no reason, why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot. Twice now the Wachowski brothers have got things right with respect to overbearing governments (The Matrix and V for Vendetta).
And the sad thing is, the ordinary person is stupid enough to believe any fabrications that will/are made against TPB. Whilst I don't agree with piracy, I definitely don't agree with the harassment that is currently going on over TPB members and equipment. Perhaps the Swedish government (as well as others) should grow a backbone and tell the US government to fuck off?
a bunch of fuckwit, idiotic, wankers, who intend to anally rape the rest of the population with their pro right Christian fundamentals belief system(s) and control everything that we say, think or do.
and you're not better by auto assuming that he has some guilt factor (you did associate him with terrorists). The fact is the US government (and others) have LIED to the people. I'd rather no government at all and pure chaos than lies. And more and more people are growing like me. It's only a matter of time before there's a global revolution the likes that the French had several hundred years ago. The big question is, will the government of the time refuse to let go of its power and destroy the populace, or will it go quietly? I bet the former.
I agree. I smell money, and lots of it. You ever wonder why the US has such a large deficient... bribes...yes, bribes. You think they pay 5grand for a dunny?
I'd have to agree. Sadly. The governments of the world (in particular, the US government), do NOT want the populace to know what they do. And, how they do it. This would not be the first time that the CIA has done something like this.
Dave
PS Remember Israel's agents assassinating that guy Six or so months ago? I don't remember a single diplomat from any country in the world bad mouthing Israel for something that is blatantly illegal (murder). All these diplomats did was bad mouth Israel for using fake passports. Doesn't that really make you wonder?
Blame apathy. The modern person doesn't care, they don't want to deal with society's problems, they just want "someone else" to deal with it. They don't care how, all they care about is that they don't have to worry about it. We already work an increasing number of hours. Retirement ages are either being pushed higher and higher, or disappearing completely. Your average person just wants to go him and vegetate to get over work. When we're tired, we're lazy. Why do you think governments keep allowing businesses to pay us less, and make us work longer hours, with poorer working conditions? If they can do that to most of the working population, they defuse public anger, and if they do that, they can get away with more and more. And increase their powers. I mean, for the few who see through the BS and call the government out on its lies, they get labelled terrorists or troublemakers (or both). They get harassed and bullied into submission one way or another. No wonder the average person can't be bothered to make sure its elected politicians are doing the right thing.
I agree. They killed him years ago. Everything else is a mock CIA video with a look a like. If the people are still afraid of these "terrorists", then they are more inclined to give more powers to the government. People are stupid, they believe the BS that their governments feed them. I personally think that every politician is a liar. They have no real use in society.
Ah yes, but you see, Yankees love to dominate the world. They love to be the centre of the world. It's *their* world after all (well, that's how they see it). America has long since ceased minding its own business (Israel anyone?).
It certainly doesn't support obvious frivolous claims like the litigious system the US has. Sorry, but patent trolls should have no legal rights. They waste the courts time and money, when it could be far better used on more serious cases. Period.
And yes, your government is pathetic. I don't give a shit if you're a patriotic American, if you believe your government is good, you're either an idiot, mentally incapable or just so blind to your countries ills, it's a worry. I see many Americans with the same attitude as yours - you simply can't handle criticism of your country, even when it's deserved. You believe that your country is the best in the world, bar none, which is a load of BS. Your country is only the best in the world when it comes to wars, and looking after the rich. Oh, and making sure your RIAA and MPAA are protected, despite both being illegal monopolies.
No thank you (to quitting my job). All employers are like this these days, so, unless you work for yourself, then you just have to put up with it (but, that doesn't mean you have to *like* it).
"dole". No such thing. I'm an ex Centrelink employee (did Six years, 2nd largest office in the country btw), there never has been official name of "dole" for Newstart Allowance. It's slang.
The US doesn't give a shit about people. Their government can afford trillions of dollars on wars. Trillions of dollars on bailing out the filthy rich who were not responsible with other people's money. Those bastards should have all been locked up for life, and every bit of their personal properties confiscated and used to pay off the debts that they accumulated. Instead, the US has one of the largest homeless populations. One of the world's poorest medical systems. An education system that focuses on sporting achievements instead of academic ones. Shall I go on? Oh yeah, a prison system that is clearly NOT solving their crime problems. And then there's the horrid death sentence, barbaric, immoral, and clearly not solving and deterring crime.
I know people who have been, and lived in America. They do not have kind words about it. Saying Australia is great because you're comparing it to such a shit country doesn't cut it.
As to hiring female administrators over males, that's discrimination buddy. Of course, you probably like breaking the law.
Oh, and minimum wage? I guess the rich have to get richer someway, don't they? Slavery is still well and truly alive in the US of A.
Then why does the fucked up US legal system allow them to still be a patent troll...everyone knows what they are. Everyone knows what they are doing. Surely, someone in your pathetic government and jurisprudence system has a backbone?
35 hours? Crikey, what planet are you on? Australians are now #2 in the world for longest working hours. Factor in our shit roads, and absolutely crappy public transport and there's a few more hours. Does my employer pay for me fucking 3 hours of my life over travelling to and fro work? Nope. That's time wasted as far as I'm concerned that I *can't* get back.
A blacklist doesn't go by DNS records btw. DNS might be used to gather information on the site, but that's about all. The blocking will most likely be based on a string based blocking system, probably a cheap assed one at that. Probably cos it had the word "sex" in it. I mean, sex is such a dirty thing (please note the extreme sarcasm in my tone). If sex is so bad, please bosses, don't fuck anymore. That way, the bosses don't breed little snotty nosed spoilt fucktards onto the planet that will be future bosses that fuck the masses around.
Bosses usually get paid a lot, for doing very little, and what little they usually do, they fuck up, which they usually conveniently blame on the staff underneath them btw.
My bosses were looking at hiring to replace one of the girls that's leaving. I could hear them talking about "we're not getting a guy to do the job, it MUST be a female, because we *only* accept females for administration roles". That's blatant discrimination, and blatantly illegal. And they know it. Yet, they still break the law. I don't have much pity for bosses, sorry.
If what you say is true, then why the fuck do I have a job description? If I've done my job, as per my job description, why should I get punished with more work because some other employee fucktard is lazy and sits on their ass? Blood, meet stone. We work longer hours, for less and less effective pay, for shittier conditions, with less rights. This country is going down the gurgler fast from an employee point of view. We're becoming a mini America, and that's just fucked. If I wanted to be an American, I'd go and move over there. But since I hate the US system, which is even worse than here in Australia, no thank you. I'd rather go live in hell. Seriously. Australia is fast approaching the turdville that America is.
Well, really, most stuff is blocked because employers don't want you being able to serf the net (I deliberately misspelt serf wrong by the way). There's a real need for vox populi. Good on her for starting up a party with some aims to retain people's rights.
These lack of freedoms in some countries (like North Korea for example) do not make it right for "modern", western countries like Australia to remove our rights.
As an employee, if my employer blocked that political site, but not others, I would take it up with them, and if need be, industrial relations. If they're going to deliberately block it because they dislike its policies, then they should be blocking all political parties websites. The employer might argue that I'm not allowed to serf the web, but what about when I'm @ lunch? I guess if employers had their own way, we'd be working 20 hour days for 50c an hour with no lunch breaks, no toilet breaks and slave drivers with whips at the ready. You'd probably support that as well by the sounds of it. It's people like you that shit me, it's people like you that encourage governments to take away our rights.
Well, don't buy the game. I'm not. Screw Blizzard. I have no intentions of buying StarCraft II nor Diablo III. If enough people boycott the game, it'll send a clear message to Blizzard that we AREN'T happy with what they've done. Greedy bastards. Splitting the game up into 3 was for profits, nothing else. Those who believe Blizzard's lies are either stupid, naive, or both (probably the latter to be bluntly honest). Blizzard will only understand when they lose money.
I'm all for people hacking the shit out of StarCraft II to bring back functionality that SHOULD have been in the game in the first place. Blizzard isn't the same company that it used to be all those years ago. It's a cunt of a company now.

I make no apologies for my comments.

PS I actually hate the c word, I reserve it for the very things that I absolutely detest the most.
hahaha thanks for the good laugh!
