    Nearly every computer you buy in store (or online even) comes preloaded with so much junk, it wouldn't surprise me if your typical computer boots with 75% of actual memory used up. Just walk into a Best Buy and try using one of their display models. Your average Joe Schmoe doesn't know that all those little icons in the system tray shouldn't be there, much less how to disable them. This isn't Win7's fault, it's the OEMs'. Agreed, this is a very lousy report with way too many variables.

    rolfwind was using Jesse Ventura's victory as 'proof' that Independents do stand a fighting chance, but that argument is flawed, since he most likely would have won no matter what party he was affiliated with. 99% of the time Independents do not win, no matter how much more 'wholesome' they may or may not be than the Democans or the Republicrats.

    The IOActive research will probably never be released publicly: Many of these devices are already deployed and it would be too dangerous to make the bugs known.

    Hopefully they've tested the security of the computers that are storing this data. Wouldn't it be ironic if the IOActive computers were hacked and criminals got a hold of their worm?

    I suppose it's possible for the independent party to win in the future, provided they can find a famous enough celebrity to run... but I wouldn't bet my ever-shrinking stocks on it. No Independent Party candidate has been elected president since George Washington, and I don't expect that to change in the next few centuries.

    Oh yeah, and Jesse turned out to be a pretty crappy governor.

    Maybe this is a level, but from all indications this is standard Ubuntu with standard support (i.e. go look it up on the forums).

    So to use the open-source router, you must have a closed source (or discontinued) browser. Nice. I know they probably copy/pasted the requirements from all their other routers, but still.     If a car is coming towards you at 100 miles an hour and at 50ft away a phycisist says "There's a very good chance that car isn't going to stop in time, maybe you should move out of the way" do you tell him you want to be 100% sure before you move?

    Actually, I would do nothing. Not by choice, but because I wouldn't have time. If the car were traveling at 100mph, that translates to approximately 147 feet per second. Ergo, if the car were 50 feet away when the physicist began to warn me, I would be dead before he finished uttering "There's a..." So if we go by your analogy, we've been warned far too late and we're going to die anyway. Unless of course the physicist is wrong. I'm also curious as to why he's saying "Maybe you should move out of the way" rather than "LOOK OUT!!!" Typical physicists...

    Want to use your favourite software (photoshop, dreamweaver, GTA 4 etc: nope, that's for windows and/or mac only. Photoshop CS2 works flawlessly under WINE, as does Dreamweaver 8. GTA 4 isn't out yet, so you can't really play that on any OS, can you? =P

    Want to buy new hardware... well you can if you scour the internet for days finding out if it's compatible; you can't just pop down pcworld one saturday afternoon and pick something up and know it'll work. DAYS?? Well, maybe if you try searching without using a search engine. :| Otherwise a quick search on Google or Ubuntuforums will give you an answer. Probably in a few minutes.

    Want to use Ubuntu without broadband... nah it's not really designed that way, you'll be waiting days to install anything. Want to install some software... sure... if you broadband no problem... oh, but it might install the software anywhere on your system... good luck learning to grep it. Fat chance if your friend has just given you a cdrom with software on it! Okaaaayyy... and Windows or Mac will be any better...? Last I checked, there's almost 200MB of Windows updates on a fresh XP SP2 install. And your messenger programs, anti-virus software, firewall software, games, etc. won't download any faster on Windows either. Although Ubuntu comes with the majority of programs you need already installed, so....

    want to play games.... err... well... no.. not really, but hey we've got solitaire!!! And World of Warcraft, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal... heck, most of the games on Steam. Doom, Quake, almost all emulators..... But you can't play GTA IV. Shucks. D:

    What about installing applications from magazine's cover disc (like what you can do with windows and osx)... err no, you probably can't do that either... as you'll have to compile something or other and you probably haven't got all the right library headers or something. Yeah... unless you buy Linux or console magazines. And Windows software that comes with magazines is always soooo~ awesome...

    want to do anything other than surf the web and run openoffice... get used to using the terminal (still) Yeah, if you want to do anything other than surf the web, run OpenOffice or Office 2003, chat on messenger and Skype, play games, create 3D models, edit photos and video, watch movies, or listen to music..... Wait... what's left?

    KDE and Gnome have come on in leaps and bounds, linux itself has come on enormously in recent years.. but it's still so so far away from being a user friendly OS for regular joes. (just looka the filesystem, it's still a throwback to the 1970s and is virtually unintelligible to non linux folk I'm kind of lost as to how KDE is any less user-friendly than Windows... Especially KDE 4. And... the filesystem? I don't think non-geeks will be messing around with the filesystem anyway.

    WE might all think linux it's the dog's bollocks but we read ./ so by definition we're GEEKS and already technicaly minded... the rest of the world doesn't think like us! *sigh* Seriously, what's the last Linux distro you used? Slackware 1.0? How in the world did this get (Score:3, Insightful)?

    Set the router to use OpenDNS. You can configure the parental controls to apply to anyone on your IP address. So even if he brings his friend's computer over, he won't be able to get on teh pr0n sites. Unless of course he plugs directly into the modem, or resets the router. But if the router gets reset, you will notice. And hopefully it will take him a while to figure out that it is the router that is doing the filtering. Any software installed on a computer is worthless and can be easily bypassed. You could also set up a computer as a firewall and use SmoothWall, which can log any site that's been accessed (and even IM conversations, for the extremely paranoid). If he knows everything he does will be documented, he will probably be very hesitant to visit any bad sites. (Some routers even have basic keyword filtering and logging built in. You can check that too.) Although, no matter what you do, you can't stop him from going over Billy's to look at his secret stack of Playboys under his mattress. A nice talk with him is most definitely a must, but you can use the above info to make sure your bandwidth isn't being used for devious purposes.

    What if web sites started using one-time ads, or timed ads? Then once you've seen the ad, it will go away and not reappear again (at least until you delete your cookies). Then you could browse the rest of the site without annoyance, and the site owners would still get their revenue. Also, instead of tracking your browsing history, why not just display ads that have something to do with the site? If you're on the site, you're obviously interested in what's on it, otherwise you wouldn't be there. I think the targeted ads are just silly, especially since they're so off most of the time. It'd be much simpler and more effective if all sites just displayed ads relative to their content without having a script do it for them.
