The designs are elegant, the hardware is of high quality, and these are not slapped together ATX components.
I know that in Apple discussions on/. it's always mentioned, but elegance in a computer should always be the last thing to be considered, not the first. Quality, OS, warranty etc, yes. Pretty curved edges or brushed steel casing? Only important if you care more about style rather than computing power. Of course, Macs are elegant, there's no denying that. Just...that shouldn't be the first selling point of a high end machine.
Again with earlier comments on not being able to view it, being from the vast wasteland that is not-America.
I suppose this means we have to pirate something which Joss has made to distribute for free...not a common situation. Still, it shouldn't be long until it pops up as a torrent...
Likewise....I've had the same versions sent to Australia, usually arriving within 2-3 weeks. Plus some stickers to put on friend's Macs;)
I prefer to get the OS this way, as family/friends are more likely to let me demonstrate the Liveboot from an official CD, rather than a burnt ISO with my scribbling on the top.
FWIW, there has been an upswing recently in the number of comics (and magazines, if you count MAD as a mag;) on the torrent sites - while I'm not suggesting you post them on the Pirate Bay, it may be worth browsing through & asking the people who submit them how they do it. They generally appear to be very good quality, so they may have a few ways of doing it which doesn't destroy the comic...
Twitter is frustrating, because every now and then he'll write an insightful/interesting post, but end it by tying it in with teh evil of M$ or whatever he tends to complain about. However, the people who consistently follow him and his sock puppets around are even more annoying. I don't care that he's one person with umpteen accounts - I judge on a post by post basis, and if he sometimes says something worth listening to, good. If he doesn't (more often), well that's my issue for browsing at -1.
In fairness......Leopard - an incremental upgrade. Apple tend to release them (comparatively) frequently. Vista - worst OS since Windows ME? There has been one release between ME & Vista (not counting 64 bit versions). So...worst out of 2 OS'? Eh. Hardy Heron - I've not personally come across many bugs, YMMV there I suppose.
No good operating systems in 8 or 9 months? Man, they should be releasing new versions weekly!
Seconded. A family member had an older Toshiba Satellite which ran XP Pro like a dog, taking about 30 seconds to do anything (open folders, copy & paste etc). She got a new laptop, I requisitioned the olde one & installed Ubuntu. Now I tend to use it more than my desktop, which has much better specs (& runs XP Home).
I'd recommend this for almost any older computer, it saves money & is fine to give anyone you know who just needs a net surfing/word processing computer. Either that, or give it to your younger brother so he has something to surf for pr0n on which won't end up filled with virii/malware.
Australia does not have constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech though. We have implied freedom of speech (High Court ruling) but that would probably fail against libel/slander laws passed by Parliament.
However, NZ is not yet a state of Australia, so I'm not sure why it's come up:)
Exactly. I'll be getting my wife a laptop within the next year, and she & I won't get anything with Vista. At the moment, you can still get a few laptops at stores with XP, but when they finally get taken from the market....bam. Lost customer for MS, as I'll probably get her a Macbook or just install Ubuntu.
Two comments on that....it only took about 2 weeks for my Ubuntu CD to arrive from wherever it came from (somewhere in Europe, I think) to Australia, which isn't bad at all. Secondly, I like to have a professional looking CD to use to liveboot family & friend's computers to show them what Ubuntu is like - they are much more likely to trust me with something that looks legitimate than if I just brought over a burnt CD scribbled on with a texta. YMMV, of course.

I was thinking about this the other day, and I honestly don't think MS can do much to be innovative and maintain their position in the market. Take Apple as an example - a few years back they were gasping for breath with a very small market share. They didn't have all that much to lose, and so were able to make a break with something new (OSX) and come up with something different.
Now, to put that against MS....they achieved a mindboggling share of the PC market, and were able to rest on their laurels for years. Now, they face competitors in a number of areas - OS, browsers, office suites - and their success is also what cripples them. They can't make a break with their software past the way Apple did, because if they do, they suddenly lose the connection with their established market. Think about it - if new MS products differ too radically from their old ones, or are completely incompatible etc, then suddenly the barrier between them and Linux/Apple etc is lowered dramatically. If you have to learn a new OS, for example, then there's as much chance of someone buying a shiny new Mac or picking up that free OS the kids are talking about as picking up the new MS OS and learning how to use it, not to mention the fact that MS and bugs/insecurity are a common perception...
So IMHO, they can have innovation or market share. Not both.
"Information wants to be free" is only simplistic if you don't reference the whole quote:
On the one hand information wants to be expensive, because it's so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time. So you have these two fighting against each other.
Bwian, hey?
And also, sentenced != crimes committed.
FWIW, I believe Blizzard recently released a patch which doesn't need the CD in the drive anymore. Better best part of a decade late than never ;)

Should they not be? Joss went on to put Nathan Fillion in the last season of Buffy after Firefly got axed...then there was the BDM...

I'm picking up the sarcasm, but for what it's worth, Ubuntu do provide & ship CDs for free...

Wow, over in Australia we flaunt them :)
I was referring to consumer OS releases only, and to XP specifically. I pulled the release dates from here, so if I'm wrong, I blame the source :)

Yes, but it's also a concept begging for a raid by 4chan....maybe it's for the better that they weren't elected ;)
People still pay for pirated software? ;)

Unless the claws help it cross a busy road and jump on logs & the backs of turtles, it probably won't assist frogs in the long term...
