The only thing that even slightly concerns me is a trojan, keylogger or something similar that can steal passwords to financial info. And even then, while an inconvenience, can be cleared up after a some phone time with the bank(s). I reformat most of my PCs every 3-6 months anyway (A little OCD I suppose, and yes I nuke the Linux box too), so getting hit with something and doing it a little early wouldn't terribly inconvenience me...It would just suck a bit more on a Saturday since my backups run Sunday morning :-)

Life is like a MMORPG encounter-risk vs reward...being overly paranoid all the time is not worth avoiding the small chance of getting hit with something bad. I take a few precautions and generally don't worry about it too much after that. It's not like I'm browsing with an unpatched IE6 allowing unsigned ActiveX controls. I know I'm running considerably more secure than the average idiot out there.

For me it's just speed, stability, and correct rendering in that order. Security isn't really a concern, that's what I run AV and a software firewall, and the PCs I use for any length of time have 2 or 4GB of memory..and if I need to utilize that much in another app I close my damn browser. I had used IE6/7 on my windows machines and FF on my linux box up until about a year ago when I realized Opera was a) faster and b) free (and not ad supported). If these speeds hold up it looks like I may be dropping Opera for FF for all my PCs again. Definately going to have to pick up the Speed Dial extention for it...I'm completely addicted to that feature.

Exactly...it does depend on what you want the PC for and what you want to spend. Sub $400-500ish, AMD all the way. But $500-800 or so and it depends on what you want to do with the PC...if you want to do gaming, you'll want to save cash on the CPU and mobo (AMD chipsets seem to be a bit cheaper too) and buy a more powerful video card...but if you don't plan on much 3D usage, you'll want to go with the faster CPU and skimp on the video card.

If you'll note, I said E6750, not E6420. It'd be stupid to pay $200 when you can get a better processor for a bit less:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115029

Now unless it's one of the few apps that actually utilizes quad-core, the E6750 beats or compares to the 9700, which is at least $50 more expensive than it is (can't find a 9700 for sale anywhere, 9600 is $240). And if you need quad-core, the Q6600 is probably about the same price as the 9700 and about the same performance.

I've never been a fanboy of Intel nor AMD (being a fanboy in general is pretty stupid...no company always makes the best products). My prior PC was an AMD 64 3800+ (which is now chugging away happily as a server). I build AMD machines for the workstations where I work because you can make a great machine for $300. What I'm saying is that AMD is simply not competitive for most applications in the mid-high end right now. I really wish they were and hope they get there, because competition is good, very good. Intel getting the crap kicked out of it for years and producing the Conroe is a great example of why....had AMD not been beating them, they might have just stayed lazy and complacent and just done the standard MHz upgrades.

When you can buy an E6750 for $180 that is competitive with/beats AMD's more expensive top of the line Phenom depending on the application, then it's really hard to justify buuilding a $600-700 PC that uses AMD.

Now for the really cheap machines, AMD 64 X2's are the way to go...much better than any Intel processor in that price range ($60-$120).

So not only will it open people eyes to torrents (Discography? You mean I can download all their songs at once?! And not in shitty 128k quality?), it will also have a fairly minimal impact on music piracy initially.

But I still highly doubt this will get any traction. TPB has proven to be rather immune to direct copyright infringement, and has ridiculed the Web Sheriff on several occasions. The only reason the other recent indictment has stood up is because it approaches it from a different angle (accessory to copyright infringement).

And even still, even if any of this results in a verdict against TPB...the owners apparently don't even know where the site is hosted anymore since the '06 raid. They presume several different countries but have requested not to be informed of the location. So really probably the worst thing that could happen is the domain name gets forced down...and then it changed to thepiratecove.org or something.
