i'm talking macro scales here. as in the giraffe's neck gets longer so it can reach its food easier. or plants are generally green because red and blue are the ideal colors of light for them to absorb.
we didn't have cell phones. beepers were just starting to appear when i graduated high-school. we never had any problems alerting in the event of an emergency. we had fire alarms, PA system, and ye olde fashioned telephones in every classroom.
I know you were joking here, but evolution only seems random from the outside looking in. In any given environment, life will evolve to take advantage of the available natural resources in the most efficient manner possible. Granted, the environment differs greatly from planet to planet, but I think we can agree that any planet hosting life as we know it will have some remarkable similarities to earth. Life will evolve in the best way to take advantage of that environment- two eyes to see in 3D, bipedal for mobility, upper limbs to manipulate things physically, brains to control it all, a mouth at the top and an ass at the bottom because gravity only knows down, some sense of smell to detect fuel(food), ears (or something similar) to detect predators, and some form of genitalia to reproduce.
I often wonder if we are Earth's end-of-the-line inhabitant. Animals evolve to adapt to their environments. Us humans adapt the environment to suit us. Have we stopped evolving? It's a dangerous situation if we have, because then we become a non-changing environment for all the creepy-crawlies we are host to. Bacteria will rule the world in 100 million years!/rant
I live in MA and work in Healthcare IT. We are in the process of moving over to a completely paper-free Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. MA actually made this a requirement by state law to be paperless by 2010.
The argument that you can't get "new" health insurance is not an argument to remain at a job you hate. Group coverage plans (i.e: the kind you get from your employer) aren't allowed to exclude pre-existing conditions if you already had coverage.
You know why they aren't allowed? Government regulation.
No it is not a win-win situation. What you are practicing is Robin Hood economics which teaches class envy. Saying that it is "Ok" to tax the rich more takes away the incentive for most people to advance since most "rich" people are not associated with a corporation: they are just employees of a corporation.
The system in the U.S. basically incentive-based, and you taking away the incentive because it is going into the pocket of the government and not in the pocket of the person working harder or taking the risk to advance.

I kinda got the same impression. Then I was thinking, if you had a netflix subscription what would the point of copying be? You could stream the same movie over and over and not pay a cent more.
The PS3 is already an example of this- you can install linux on it right out of the box.
It's funny though, pc fonts are designed to be read from a position a few feet in front of a monitor in the 20" range. When you start displaying websites on a 40" tv from 7-10' away, things become way too tiny.
You sure about that? A friend of mine got busted for running from the cops on his motorcycle- when they came to his apartment to arrest him, they found a plant. He did less than a year state time.
I actually thought they should give control over this to the USPS. This would guarantee everybody an email address, and we can all use less and less paper mail.
Then what about that whole god rested on the 7th day bit? By your logic, weekends should be thousands of years long! I'm starting to like this whole bible thingy now!
