  1. they just need to make it harder on Failing Our Geniuses · · Score: 1

i would say we need to make jr high and sr high schools super hard. and require testing to advance grades. and other requirements. and when students dont pass they dont get ahead! none of this testing and then letting them go ahead even if they fail! or that the bar to go ahead is too low. We need high school to be so hard that these kids start killing themselves (maybe not that hard) like in japan or something. Maybe more personal attention to students would help instead of everyone being faceless. The harder the challenge thrown at a kid usually they harder they work to accomplish it. The potential of not being able to get a high school diploma might make people work harder or get smarter! also less ridicule of smart people would be nice. anyway i'm just spouting whatever comes out my head, take anything i say with a grain of salt.

Nobody training anymore is an issue I deeply believe will be the downfall of industries. More and more companies these days don't want to train. I am an animator and from what I see in the games industry is that artists arent looked at on the same level as programmers when both jobs are equally important, one can't do their job without the other. So these companies dont want to train people, mostly because of the upfront costs. Businesses in the past decade I believe have stopped looking in the long term so much and just the right now bottom line. Its sad because animation and programming are the types of work a young newb could really use a great journeyman to apprentice. My friend who is a games programmer wishes he had someone to follow and learn from, too bad he is one of the best programmers at that small company so he feels he isnt learning much.

i believe the main problem is that the industry and the public caused the wrong term to be used just because it sounds better. Procedural programming is much more catchy than procedural content generation. Kinda like how nuclear is now pronounced and possibly spelled nucular. heh. The cool thing about spore though imo is the creature generation or modification tool. They spent a lot of time tweaking the powerful tools in the game so it is accessible to everyone. I hope the games lives up to the hype. Other places i guess you would find procedural something is with textures. Basically the major buzz about the power of procedural content generation is that its a means to put more power in the programmers hands. And to free up mundane tedious work so the artists on the project can do the more difficult stuff. Though some people would like to believe that it is to take power away from the artists on the project hoping someday that games are drawn with code alone.
