  1. Monopolies on AOL Jumps Into the Ring with Microsoft, Yahoo!, Google · · Score: 1
A Google & Yahoo combination would consolidate 90% of the search and advertising business on the internet, and MS says it like it's a bad thing, but MS Windows has approximately 91.5% of the desktop OS market share, and seems to have no problem with that.

    http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=8

The good news is that OSX is slowly gaining momentum. I see nothing wrong with Google providing Yahoo's ad service. If Google can do it better and bring in more money, then let them do what they do best.

  2. Re:Pertinent word... on Unreleased iPhone 2.0 May Already Be Hacked · · Score: 1
DRM in the music business makes listening to music more difficult for consumers and is designed to make music sales more profitable for the record companies. It gives them more control over the music files after they've been sold and downloaded by consumers. DRM is of NO benefit to consumers, and that's why people hate it. Apple seems to be keeping the iPhone under control not to make things more difficult for consumers, but to make it easier for consumers. As Apple maintains the software that is allowed on the phone, they are keeping the phone stable and reliable and helping keep it running in a way that is better for the consumer. They do have to follow a few little rules that are a result of their agreements with AT&T (no VOIP on Edge network), but for the most part I think the SDK will open the phone up a lot to a variety of possibilities.

I would be afraid to hack my iPhone. I don't care to have hacked code running on it. I had no idea what type of consequences there would be. And I've heard from people that the quality of jailbreak apps isn't that great anyways.

Actually this chip looks really interesting. It would integrate the ability to listen to and transmit to FM radio on the chip. I think it would be a great fit for the next gen iPhone, but there is doubt that Apple would use it.

The FM iPod attachment you posted looks like it is designed for regular iPods, not the iPod Touch or iPhone. One of the user reviews states that it doesn't work with her iPod Touch. But it is a good suggestion and would work extremely well if an interface was developed for it on the iPhone.

At the gym when I'm on an elliptical or AMT machine all of the TVs are muted and broadcasted in different FM stations. If you want to listen to the TV you need an FM radio. I have an iPhone and think an FM Radio would be a great feature considering that many cheaper MP3 players have it no problem.

To be fair, RealPlayer is and has always been terrible to use and I would never wish such a terrible curse on even my worst enemies. WMP is much much better than RealPlayer. iTunes is even better than WMP.

Also, back in the day, Netscape wasn't that great of a browser anyways. I used to very much prefer IE over Netscape. Ever since I discovered Firefox I've found it to be much more reliable and more enjoyable to use. I personally think Safari is almost as good as Firefox, but not quite. Safari is, of course, better than IE.

I do believe that Apple has done a great job of gaining market share, and within the next few years they're expected to gain even more, especially by college students and higher educated people. OS X is truely a superior platform to Windows, and unfortunately Linux hasn't proven itself good for much.

  8. Removable Battery? on Woz Dumps on MacBook Air, iPhone, AppleTV · · Score: 1

Why do people want this feature so much? I've found it to be the most annoying feature of any phone. On phones with removable batteries, after a few months, or about a years use, the connections can become loose to the point that when you pick your phone up or set it down the battery shakes a little bit, causing the connection to break, causing the phone to lose power and shut down, requiring a restart. Now say you've had your phone for a little under two years and it has gotten really bad and it shuts off pretty much every time you even touch the phone, or think about touching it. This is what happened to my old phone, and two of my girlfriends phones, as well as the phones of friends of mine. Yes it would be nice to take off the empty battery and throw on a charged one and keep talking / surfing Safari, but to ensure the best functioning of the device it only seems logical that the battery should be like how it is on the iPhone. I charge mine every night and it works great. No complaints here.

  9. Feelings on Google to Begin Storing Patients' Health Records · · Score: 1

When I stated that I trust Google more than Microsoft it was based on an intuitive feeling in my gut based on my experiences with each of these companies products. I have reason to believe that the way I feel is also the way a lot of other people are going to feel. A lot of people act based on feelings and not on actual reasoning. A lot of people vote for president of the US based on how the candidate makes them feel, not based on any major credentials. It is my experience that Microsoft is not the type of company that you can trust to get things done properly and in a reliable way. It is also my experience that Google has consistently provided many reliable services that are great to use and have very few strings attached. There are more in depth and logical reasons behind the philosophical functioning of each company and why I support one over the other, but I believe most people are not going to act based on similar complex analysis and tend to lean more towards their gut feelings.

And I don't think microsoft or google are interested in going through my medical records. But I would feel more secure having them on a google server than a MS server. Some companies I trust and some I don't. I trust google. I like how they do business. I don't care for microsoft. I don't feel I can trust them.

The fact that Google is even able to attempt to make something like this happen means that it understands and values what it means to offer services in a reliable way that is respectful to its users and works to preserve their rights and privacy. I don't think Microsoft could ever even attempt such a thing. No one would ever trust them enough. In fact, I can think of very few companies I would trust with all of my medical information other than Google.

  16. I don't care for Linux on Is Apple Killing Linux on the Desktop? · · Score: 0

I'm pretty sure all of you on /. will hate me for saying it, but I don't care for Linux at all. It does not offer a good user experience for your average consumer, it is not an easy to use product, and it does not provide all of the advantages Windows and OSX provide. Linux is for geeks and that's probably where it'll stay. Linspire is probably the easiest Linux distro because it comes complete with many codecs and programs and makes it easy to install new programs. Other than that, Linux is just a pain to deal with and I see no advantage to using it over Windows or OSX. And apparently it's market share is fact enough that it's not that great.

Maybe the best way MS can get everyone to like Vista is by making their next OS even more bloated and annoying so everyone will go "Whoa!!! NO WAY!! I'm not going to use that piece of crap. I'm stickin with Vista! Oh yeah! Vista is way better!" And so the quality and functionality of the OS will always be relative to the new product that is trying to make it obsolete. By that time XP will be too old, Windows 7 will be too new, and Vista will be just right.

I think a fair comparison would mean that Apple = a new Lamborghini and Linux = a De Lorean modded to look like it did in Back To The Future. Either way, the market share of desktop Linux is pretty low; much lower than OSX. If it is better, and it is cheaper than Apple's products considering that they require you to purchase expensive hardware, than why aren't more people using Linux? Probably because it consistently fails to provide a good overall user experience. It is getting better, but for the average computer user it still doesn't provide the ease of use, enjoyment, and compatibility that OSX and Windows provide.

Actually I think the text messaging on the iPhone is great. Way better than any other phone I've tried, and I spent like 4 hours in a Sprint and AT&T store playing with different phones, plus playing with my friends phones. I find that typing isn't a problem at all, and is actually easier because of the way it auto-completes words. Also, I don't have to press the same button four times to get the "s" letter. A lot of different people have agreed that the iPhone keyboard thing is more of a non-issue. I do wish I could send pics and videos, and I'd like to be able to send a text to multiple people. I also wish it had smiley faces. I think all of these things will be addressed in the future through updates, which most other phones can't be updated in this way.

Like Windows ME, it will probably always remain in a pathetic and unusable state. It is definitely best to wait for XP SP3, and then wait for the next version of Windows, due out in probably a good 4 or 5 years. If you have the money, save yourself the trouble and get a Mac. OSX really is the best OS currently in existence.

  22. Re:Goog on Kindle Versus The iPhone · · Score: 0

I also own an iPhone and agree that it would not be practical to look at that small of a screen for hours at a time. The other major problem I see with this is the battery life. I use the internet for maybe an hour every day, make a few phone calls, check my e-mail a few times, listen to music a little, and maybe snap a picture or two, and I have to charge it every 1.5 days, if not every day. Using it several hours to read books would definitely drain the battery, meaning that I might have to charge it every 12 hours or so. It wouldn't even last a full day in my case, and I'm sure many others would have the same issue.

I don't get it when people argue that Google is evil because they want information. Information, and the processing or storage of it, is not a bad thing. It's a persons/organizations motivations that are capable of being good and bad. And generally Google = Good, other companies (Microsoft) = Bad.

  25. Second Gen iPhone on Apple May Introduce New iPod on Wednesday · · Score: 0

I'm pretty confident they will release a second gen iPhone in the US, which will also be the first gen iPhone for Europe. I'm expecting 3G support, GPS, and I expect memory capacity to remain the same. They will probably add a few new features, as well as tweaks to the UI. The biggest change, I think, will be the price. I expect the price of the second gen iPhone to drop to about $400 and $500, about $100 cheaper than they are now. If they plan to sell 10 million iPhones by next June, they're definitely going to have to lower the price. This will also give people enough time to start putting together their wish lists for Christmas. If they don't release a second gen iPhone on Wednesday, expect it in October with the Leopard release. A nano iPhone would not be the biggest surprise either.
