  1. My 2 cents on Mysterious Sound Waves Can Destroy Rockets · · Score: 1

Talking of rockets and waves, I was at the launch pad at the Baikonur cosmodrome on Tuesday and our crew almost got arrested for using Motorola walkie-talkies. They told us we had been interfering with telemetric systems and the live TV feed from the rocket.

  2. Kazakhstan, too? on Pakistan Blocks YouTube · · Score: 1

This very weird, but as I'm writing this comment YouTube does not seem to be accessible here in Kazakhstan. I'm saying weird because I really don't expect out government to do anything like that. Is YouTube just being DDoSed by Islamist botnets?

  3. Don't forget about English on Professors Slam Java As "Damaging" To Students · · Score: 3, Funny

And do you people know how damaging English can be to those studying linguistics? No cases, no genders, just two articles, only 26 letters, decimal numerals, vowels not ommitted from spelling, etc. etc.

  5. Re:Baikonur - Kazakhstan vs. Russia on The Story of Baikonur, Russia's Space City · · Score: 1

You're right, but only Proton launches usually get suspended since these spacetrucks just keep blowing up and polluting the place down here. Also, the last one fell less than 100 miles away from the place where Kazakh president was at the moment which I think made the guy angry.

Googled the guy's name in Russian - no spam- or even internet-related mentions.

  7. I'm scared to think how many PCs are destroyed on Major Linux Hardware Donor Is a CNN "Hero" · · Score: 1

A number of large international companies including the one that I work for destroy computers that are being replaced by newer ones instead of donating them to charities or selling. The reason, according to our IT person, is that someone might sue the company if something happens to the PC it sold/gave to him. How stupid is that? A cause for campaigning, maybe?

  8. Re:Good for them on Linux To Be Installed In Every Russian School · · Score: 1

This is post-Soviet Russia and its elections time (parliamentary poll this year, presidential - in 2008). This is just not going to happen, believe me, not on this scale. On the other hand, individual admins and, more importantly, school directors, do decide to switch to Linux from pirated Windows since anti-piracy raids are becoming routine.

  9. Re:The Soviet Union Will Never Die! on Soviet Union TLD Owners Snub ICANN · · Score: 2, Interesting

By the way, a few years ago Russia brought back the Soviet anthem's music and had the same person who wrote the words above adapt them for a new anthem.

No. Inanimate objects' genders are quite random in Russian. As for fatherland/motherland the most commonly used term is "rodina" which means "birthplace" and is feminine. Oh, and Russian is my mother tongue.

While we're at it: I couldn't even make a small Javascript widget on my website work under Opera. It works in FF and IE6/7. Am I just an idiot or does Opera have some special requirements to JS code?

By the way, that's called price discrimination. Flea market hawkers do the same: sell at the price that the buyer is ready to pay, thus maximizing their profit.
