Better resolution? The 770 already has a DPI-value of somewhere around 220...
I doubt you can find anything higher than that at anywhere near acceptable prices.
You can do quite a lot even being offline (my favourite waste of time being playing old LucasArts games in ScummVM...), and if you're in transit or at the beach you're still able to connect via your mobile... There are already a fair amount of open source software released for the 770, including Abiword, Gnumeric, etc. Open Office is a bit too bloated though.
Oh, indeed it was a ripoff, BUT: the intro music (no, not the loader music, although that one's great too) in Giana Sisters must make up for that. I mean, Chris Huelsbeck's music to that game is just soooo awesome.
That's a question of power consumption. The battery cannot power the port. However, it is fully possible to enable host mode, provided that you have a powered usb-hub to connect it to.
Yes, I have a 9300, so I know about that keyboard. Adding something similar would have
made the manufacturing a lot more difficult and the tablet bigger, clumsier and more expensive.
Since the main use case of this device is browsing, hwr + virtual keyboard was deemed sufficient.
Again, the PIM-applications were skipped because the device is not intended as a PIM. While it would've been nice to have such apps too, we simply don't have the manpower to do everything; our team and budget is quite limited, so we had to focus on our primary objectives. Then again, a port of GPE PIM is under way, I suggest you use that.
No, VoIP isn't Skype, but Skype is a VoIP application. I kind of doubt Skype will be used, since it's a QT-app, and we've based our system on GTK+.
There is hardware to support timed wake ups. Only within 24h though, so if you
want higher resolution than that you need to do a bit of magic =) (something like wake up every 24h,
check if it's the right day, if not, shutdown again... Definitely not a pretty solution though).
And yes, app startup is a bit slow. With the CPU and memory we have there's not much we can do.
Yes, gmail works. RS-MMC is of course because of the size. The reason for no keyboard is the same.
No calendar or PIM is because this isn't intended as a PIM-device.
As for Skype... Well, let me quote from our homepage: "There is a planned launch next year of an operating system upgrade - the Internet Tablet 2006 software edition - that will support additional services, including Internet telephony (VoIP) and Instant Messaging."
Yup. Especially the track "Southampton Dock". The remaster also has the masterpiece "When the Tigers Broke Free" on it. That song alone makes purchasing the album worth it, unless you already have it. WtTBF stabs into you when you hear it, you can really tell that every word is straight from Waters' heart.
For exemple, you actually have to configure networking on this thing (e.g. you must know what DHCP is and stuff like that and it won't seamlessly find new SSIDs and stuff like that)
Not even remotely true. Press the status bar globe icon. Choose "Connect..." Dialog "Select connection" opens. Select connection (signal strength and open/closed status shown for each). Very complicated. NOT.
The 770 is not a research project. If it was, it wouldn't have been launched at all, just kept under wraps inside Nokia.
I suggest you wait until you've tried it before coming with such statements, instead of relying on your own impression of the screenshots. The user interface is (mostly) very simple to use; in most cases way easier to grasp than a Windows machine. Hell, even my parents figured out how to use it without problems.
That's three hours with constant wireless usage. That's not really the most common scenario, unless you're using it for streaming radio (then again, when streaming radio, the screen goes blank, thus saving
power there instead). With normal browsing you can get better than that, using BT+GPRS you'll get a hell
lot better than that. And the stand-by time is roughly a week. Please tell me where I can buy another
device that weighs ~230g, with an 800x480 screen that can do more than 3 hours with 802.11g...
So yes, I can agree with your WTF. It is excitingly cheap and amazingly good battery time with the specs it has.
I used to be the sysop of TRIAD's BBS Virtual Light, running a heavily modded C*Base v3.23 on a C128
and a CMD HD. The BBS is long gone, but I'm still
trying to hunt down that final elusive bug that'll
allow me to release C*Base v3.3 =)
The device referred to in the article is probably the 770, yes, but the 770 will use Opera... When we started working on the 770 two years ago, this deal didn't exist, hell, when we launched the product one month ago this deal didn't exist, so while it would've been really nice to have a free browser in the 770, there's simply no time to move to another browser.
You're fully correct that it's an obvious tactic. Because the patent system allows this, unlike the trademark system where trademarks risk losing their protection if you don't go after abuse. Of course you don't need to have created the product that infringes the patent yourself, just using (or indeed just having it) can get someone to slap a lawsuit on your desk... Fun, isn't it?
aptitude should be your friend. You can (and should) both use it as a replacement for apt-get (with better results, since it keeps track of packages purely installed to satisfy dependencies) on the commandline, AND as a UI-tool to replace dselect. Then there's always synaptic if you use GNOME (and I suspect there's something similar for KDE, I'm not sure).

The uppercase P in print. Same bug on line 20 with the uppercase G in goto.

No, it doesn't. The browser is Opera. The Nokia WebKit effort started way too late for us to be able to use it.

Well, the cows have never used Windows beforehand and are thusly not dumbed down...
Why would I have to wait for the release? I have a 770 right here...

No, it's not. Don't post anonymously about something like this, especially not unless you have anything to back the statement with.
A hard drive would eat up the battery quite quickly, and make it at least 30-100% heavier (depends on the size of the drive).
ITYM the 770...

Too much prior art...
