We got almost all XP machines and a "Mac lab" of about 15 Powermacs... I've been trying to get a "Linux Lab" started for years, but it's very hard to push.
It was actually my pressure to have Ubuntu partially adopted that got me the job here in Information Services, I'm somewhat friendly with the director and he's always excited to get a fancy new copy of Ubuntu to try.
I've gotten Ubuntu via ShipIt in fancy mailers for years and handed them out, got a lot of students to try it and got about 3 to completely switch to it just because it's not windows.
Maybe I just haven't put enough effort into it, maybe it's just not the right time. Despite the Microsoft contract Linux isn't morbidly opposed here, but neither is it greeted with open arms. More like a "Oh, how cute, we'll have to check that out sometime."
Yeah, I know I'd rather get stabbed in the face repeatedly until I died a death so awful even a closed-casket wouldn't suffice than have consensual sex with another adult my age.
My experience in public school has been a great disappointment; it wasn't until I started college I began to learn anything in a classroom.
All my life, I've read books and fooled around on the internet. I soaked up trivial information from every source I could but it seemed the least nourishing places were at school. No school teacher could explain to me Roman numerals, I had to sit and stare at examples until it suddenly made sense. No school teacher taught me the alphabet, how to read or write... I looked at books, I asked my parents and those around me what words meant and how to say them. No school teacher taught me arithmetic, books and practice did. I didn't even learn algebra until last year.
I can appreciate the steps parents can take to get involved in their child's education, and this "unschooling" business does sound like it can give children hands-on experience beyond what time behind a desk ever might. Unfortunately, parents do not and can not be expected to do everything.
The failure of schools to satisfy parents, to me, does not seem a good reason to eliminate the school system completely. It actually says to me that the education system needs to be forcibly improved by these parents who are so concerned for their childs' educations.
We do need school. Maybe from 5 years old and up without stopping is too much time away from proactive parents, maybe the expectation of everything is learned in school is just too extreme, but the problem here is the bare minimum of the education system is simply not acceptable in the years when children will sponge up every drop of information they come across.
Anyone can propose a bill (well, many people can put a bill into congress), the value of our current administration will have to wait to be measured until it's actually in their hands.
Who in their right mind would send the murder weapon to the murderer, first class?
It's not the best analogy, but the fact is these people can not trust Apple with the evidence, it might get "lost", and no matter what Apple says the problem is they sure as hell aren't sending back the unit.
Problem with having a single, unified anti-virus (if ever such a thing is reliably possible), programmers will have an easier time guessing what protections they'll face when creating a virus.
Windows might not be the most... or... almost... close to the most stable series of operating systems, but there sure is a fair bit of variety involved in each installation. A vulnerability that can hit any generic OS X installation hard will be able to hit every other generic OS X installation hard.
This'll end in tears if Apple and friends don't keep vigilant on every threat. A problem with the die-hard proprietary and user friendly nature of Apple products is Apple are now the sole caretaker, the mother and father, the reason and the nonsense to every single computer they've made residency in. End users aren't encouraged to practice personal responsibility, they pay and trust... pay for trust...
If she did have some kind of unusual trait to her sex chromosomes and she never knew about it, but did work her ass off training and hoping for success, would it be right to disqualify her after someone else decided she wasn't enough of a girl?
They (you know, "they") don't tie the two industries together in a video game.
Login to "Hollywood World", pick your sim. Have them go on sets, act, thrash hotel rooms, act strange on Letterman. Get fat, get too skinny. Drink too much, do drugs. Go into rehab. Be "reborn" with a role that makes you relevant again.
Of course, it doesn't work quite that way, but it would be hilarious if we could see a Dirk Gentry-esque explanation to exactly how this could or couldn't have happened...
Not that I'm a Apple advocate, but Apple has had a far superior OS to Windows for the last 8 years...
Oh, yes, love the OS, mops the floor with Windows any day... I hate Apple the company. Reliable consistency is a beautiful thing, but when I'm expected to always sit with the same interface, use the same applications, the same firmware, even locked into it by clever and intelligent developers... it is simply unacceptable!
I'd be an Apple fan too if it weren't for the layer upon layer of corporate bullshit they pull on a regular basis.
You also need to consider that everyone is using something right now and you need to convince die hard Linux fans to leave their loyal distro of choice and follow you onward.
I know I haven't chosen my loyal distro of choice yet. I like Debian and Ubuntu, I was impressed with Red Hat, I've tried Gentoo and Slackware, I've even dipped my hands in FreeBSD.
I'm sure it won't be entirely net based or even close to it, but I do expect a base installation largely composed of Google apps and significant work put into integration with internet amenities.
I'm confident Google will keep focus on personalization and privacy... until advertising is concerned.
I wonder if uraniumite is ferrous...

The US, I was a difficult child and I've had few patient teachers.

I love how SonicWall thinks HackADay is "[malicious] Hacking/Proxy Avoidance".
I've requested the site to be re-rated as Arts/Entertainment, but they refused.
Well son of a bitch!
Shut up and start Thinking Differently!
That works out to two days, using my Microsoft calculator.
That's what my Electronic Arts time sheet says also.
That's... depressingly hilarious.
Maybe we should start calling the megacorps the pirates and see how that turns out...
BTW is this the "change" you were looking for? ;-)

Hehe. Sources would be nice.
Yeah, the story about having daughters and a girlfriend is convincing but I'd like to see some solid evidence of a /.er having life, for once.

In Soviet Russia... ahh... I don't have anything. I best leave it to the professionals.

Think Different, Indeed.
That doesn't necessarily discredit violence as the first refuge for the competent!
They may also be sexually ambiguous.
This brings up an interesting ethical question.

Hell, I'd play this game. :-P
I beat that game already...
Well, the burden of proof is on the prosecution!

Hilarious, but I'd like to show you this fun bit of trivia...

So, the death spiral will spin whichever way prevailing forces decide. I suppose this means the spin will be googly...
