    If the guy can provide vieweship & demographics numbers, the networks can ask for more ad revenue from their respective advertisers. I don't know at which point the additional ad revenue will make up for the lost cable fees but those may be lost already. People are cutting the cord. Networks could be losing out to netflix, amazon, etc but this way they can still show ads to the cordcutters. Maybe the long play for them

    And, did you notice that they do not defeat the bacteria, just their toxins. So, we would need to be on their pills for the duration. BTW, my mother in law has alzheimers and she has perfect teeth. I know this is anecdotal but definitely proves there are other factors here.

    I have no idea why that is still allowed. There should be NO reason for the plane to allow the pilot to take actions that crash the plane.

  6. I think our 'intelligence' is just more layers of pattern recognition. And, by patterns, I don't mean just what our 5 senses bring in. The brain monitors additional inputs. We construe those as emotions, feelings, guesses, etc.

    Just like he broke revolutionary new ground in physics, a brilliant mind is needed to break new ground in AI. I am fairly certain that the incremental progress we've been making in the field will not amount to true general AI. It's obvious we're missing something 'big'. But, I am confident that when that is found, general AI will become available very quickly and all hell will break loose.

    Amiga had graphical word processor before word for windows was a thing. The Amiga word processor did neat things like wrap text around images and stuff. Basically apps on the Amiga were better than the corresponding PC versions. What killed the Amiga was the sales channel. They were targeted as high end home computers. They did not go after businesses at all except for the niche market like tv.

    Have you thought of that? At some point cpus just won't get any faster from a design perspective. Maybe all the patterns and ideas on how to speed up CISC cpus have been tried and this is the best that will ever be. Maybe now, speed increases can only be had by frequency increases and cores. Single core ipc may have reached peak.

    How many levels of abstraction do we need? We have a browser almost resembling an OS which sits on top of the native OS communicating with the middle tier which also has OS-level features and characteristics and also communicates with the native OS. All this to produce apps that simple enough to have in the past occupied less than 1MB of ram and required a few Mhz to operate. Now each app requires GB and multi-core cpus. Have we all gone mad in the name of developer fungibility and reusable frameworks?

    Many good points in this post but keto diet is hard to keep up and we don't know what the long term side affects may be. I would be more happy to just get the gene that the skinny people have so I don't have to go to the gym daily and play sports for countless hours just to keep my healthy weight.

    Don't you know people who can eat all the shitty food they want and gain no fat? Others that watch they eat but they can't even have an ice cream or anything like that because of fear of getting fat? Why should those people not experience the happiness that comes with eating something delicious like ice cream? It really sounds an elitist attitude to blame weight gain purely on human behaviour.

    See my post above. Yes you can maintain a healthier weight and not be fat if you really expend tremendous amount of energy fighting your innate genetic predisposition. I've lived long enough to have seen people who can ingest many thousands of calories and not gain any fat and others who have to be very diligent about their lifestyle so that their body doesn't balloon up with fat. It's the genetic lottery and we all accept it but why does it need to be that way? Why do we need to accept that some of us have to fight really hard to have a healthy weight and other can get that feature for free? Science says it's a single gene. Obviously some people have it and other don't. Why do you think we cannot per-empt nature and improve this situation?

    Since puberty I always carried a little xtra weight. In college I started working out a lot. I thinned out and put on some muscle but I never became as lean as I should be for the amount of work I put into it. As I got older I have to work extra hard just to maintain a body that others can have by default. I don't think it's fair to do so much work to not look obese and the amount of hours spent doing it could be used towards other activities. So yeah, it would help people like me that are borderline, not obese but not lean enough either.

    They would not be able to compete with the googles and microsofts of the world in price. But, Should we care about them or about the actual industry that is being gutted by the influx of cheap labor? I say no.
