Can you imagine Bank of America, Barclays, or BNP Paribas saying "if you don't have an account already you better open one or someone else might do it in your name and build up a financial profile in your name"?
Heh. Actually, I would personally be unlikely to loose with such a setup, but for anyone with income or any wealth, that sure would seem like a bad bank.
Facebook bank? Anxiety attack. A thought that leaps to mind is that we can't have the clowns that run this world running this world. We need to kindly but firmly revolt against the wealth- and power-elites and organize human life on this planet right, decentralized and without hierarchies, IMO.
>People pirate software because they are cheap, unethical bastards
Yes, probably to some extent and at least judging by the moral codes of the rich motherfuckin rulers of the world.
If we can spread culture and information essentially for free for all mankind to enjoy, we totally should. (If that makes artists and studio execs starve, we need more socialism.)
Looking from the perspective of who's rich and who isn't and did they get rich by being moral, upstanding members of the community or not... I say fuck them. Being a cheap pirating snot-nosed punk is ok, in my opinion.
On the other hand, I wish there wasn't so much piracy. It would help the free software and free culture movements if people couldn't pirate so much so easily.
I feel I must go off topic here and comment on your user name, even if I'm not sure I want to do that.
I wouldn't comment on such things otherwise, but I clicked on the name and noticed that you seem to post a comment every few years, so in case I would later feel like commenting on the use rname, I probably wouldn't get the chance, so here goes:
All those so-called twitter- or facebook-revolutions are actually more accurately described as Al Jazeera revolutions. Not that they tried to flame them, but just that they brought real journalism to people. Or maybe they would have happened anyway, since people were fed up with oppression.
Bullshit. Freedom that gives the right to lock out the next person is not automatically more about freedom than freedom that protects also the next persons freedom.
This is ontopicish, isn't it? And it's all ready out there. (Hasn't probably "taken off" (depending on the definition of that), though...)
I'd love to have a Toshiba AC100 smartbook with an Nvidia Tegra ARM cpu. Capable of HD output, 9 h battery (on lighter usage IIRC). About 800 grams. Runs Android, but an Ubuntu port is progressing, from what I can tell.
And it's not just the values, of course, but also the fact that the society is very stratified. And the warmongering and the death penalty and the imprisonment of a comparatively large part of the population... All these things of course contribute to reinforce those values.
And the lie that is the American Dream, that the US is the land of the free and the land of opportunity, that you can make it here if you just put your mind to it, will contribute to many a desperate poor soul. For some the opportunities are true, but for most they aren't, but they think it is, so they blame themselves for not making it. Maybe? Or so I've heard.

I didn't rtfa, but surely there is some qualification of reasonability? If the school could reasonably be expected to know about harassment (like if they're told about it or it's witnessed as blatantly obviously out there), they should try their best to do something about it.
You pull up Canonical, as to say that we need copyright law to enforce the GPL?
That is correct. However, it is so because the law is the tool available for enforcing the philosophy of *sharing*. I'm sure RMS would be ok with a law that did away with copyrights and said that all code and culture that was distributed should be freely shareable.
My guess: 2 kinds of people. Those that say that this Murray thing was/is notable and those that don't want the biggest encyclopedia, and a free as in freedom one at that, to be governed by corrupt bureaucrats.
Sorry, but in a "free" world nobody has to do what you want them to do. Web sites don't have to post your images, gadget makers don't have to cater to the FOSS crowd, and movie studios don't have to give you their latest $100,000,000 film for free. Those are the breaks, kid.
Sorry, but you just assume that your "freedom means freedom to enslave" is the correct definition of freedom, analogous to the BSD vs GPL debate on freedom.
In everyday usage the word Linux refers to the whole OS. And by that we mean the kernel, GNU stuff, (sometimes also X11 and whatnot). In light of that, Android is not Linux, even if it technically is.
Well written and factual, but it doesn't matter. You forgot about the most important thing: Freedom. Apple wants to destroy freedom. That's a bad thing.
If Mubarak or Kadafi we're to be described as being the shiniest and fastest and making the trains run on thyme and all sorts of positive things, that wouldn't matter, because they'd still be destroyers of freedom.
(Freedom is of course also effectively non-existent with several tivoized Android phones.)
It's a modular netbook, tablet, mobile internet device (like a phone, but without phone capabilities, ie. no 3G, only wifi).' Runs Android and ubuntu and other OS:es.
It only has a previous generation (cortex-A8) processor, though...
Slashdot users are supposed to be smart; smarter than childish fanboys/fangirls.
(Now, I didn't read your parent, so maybe my comment doesn't apply exactly in this particular case, but I'd just like to make a general comment:)
Sometimes it's about freedom. Liking freedom is not just any kind of fandom. It's really important for real. Hating on MS in the name of freedom is not (necessarily) being a childish fan, IMO.
Right. Thanks.
(sorry, forgot to quote the first paragraph from the parent)

That's ok. I can live without it.

Nice name! :)
Don't you see? RMS was right! The FSF has been replaced by replicants!

Or, even better, die indebted and you will have gotten more than you should have, in the end.
Bullshit. Freedom that gives the right to lock out the next person is not automatically more about freedom than freedom that protects also the next persons freedom.

Meh. That's just flubber and videodrome mashed together. ;)
