Seems to me like most people would still need the oversight of having papers due, the classrooms discussions, and the 1-on-1 talks with professors to get the most out of a subject.
For a course that I have to take - yes. For something that I'm really interested in - No.
I wish I can remember the term, but there's this style of teaching/learning that's called something like Discovery Learning - I think. Anyway, here's an example of how it works and this is how I learn(ed) computer science (I'm 42 and always learning) in a nutshell:
I see something, an algorithm, a piece of code in a language I've never seen before, whatever. I then say to myself, "WTF is that! I have to find out!" I then Google for it and start reading up on it. When I was a kid and learning how to program graphics, I started teaching myself geometry and trigonometry so I could eventually get the Apple II to draw graphics. The information has stuck with me until this day. Now, the grammar that I had to learn hasn't - as if you couldn't tell.
I really think if our education system got away from the rote learning and drills and allowed kids to learn and have fun at it - it can be fun when you are personally discovering something - our education would greatly improve.
I think what the parent means is that since light takes time to travel, and if someone were a billion light years away; they would be seeing light that's a billion years old and therefore, the Earth a billion years ago.
"We didn't believe that you would outpace the Americans with your satellite, but you did it. Now you should launch something new by Nov. 7," Korolyov quoted Khrushchev telling him, according to Grechko.
And then America got their ass in gear and realized that science is important and started a program that vastly improved science education and learning science became the "cool" thing to do.
There were some benefits in the existence of the Soviet Union.
I think it's because there is very little, if any, accountability that the Government employees have to worry about. They can be as rude and obnoxious as they like becuase they know that even if you navigated the bureaucracy to complain, it would just be recorded somewhere and nothing would be done about it. Just look at what the folks who are mistakenly put on the "no-fly" or "extra screening" lists go through. Even a powerful Senator (Kennedy D-MA) had a problem getting off of the list. Or the nun who had to call in a favor with Carl Rove to get off of the list.
The only time I've heard of a Gov. employee getting fired was because they let someone go through with a weapon.
Then there are the stewardesses. Since 9/11 you'd think someone anointed them in Flight Goddesses. Complain about something and the next thing you know, you're being taken away in hand cuffs.
Because of a few jerks in the world, flying has become just one big bullshit hassle. Which, for my own sanity, I refuse all jobs that require travel - bills be damned! Of course now with all the screening software, a bad credit rating will get you a second look by the TSA.
Doctors: Thanks to the Internet, x-rays, MRIs, etc... can be sent overseas for a doc there to look at them and make a diagnosis and then email or call it in. And of course, there's medical tourism - which sounds really good!
Lawyers: Guess what? India is also based on English common law, so many of our legal stuff can go over there too, which it is - especially contract law. And in India, lawyers don't have the prestige that they have here, meaning, they're not paid as much in relation to the rest of the population.
In grad school, many of my foreign classmates were in grad school because that was the easiest way to stay here in the country - according to them.
Also, as an American who has a graduate degree, all I can say is, unless you're going to teach at the college level, do research, or need a graduate degree for some professional certification (Law, Medicine, Psychotherapy, etc...), a graduate degree is completely worthless and a waste of time. Want to learn more in a field that you are truly passionate about? Learn on your own. Grad school will just stifle your interest and creativity (playing to professors BS games, is one way they do it) and they'll make you do a lot of BS busy work becuase some bureaucrat with a Ph.D. somewhere thinks that's what you "must" do.
Didn't Intel just rebrand dropping "Pentium" and going with "Core"?
I think that they're having legal problems with Apple on that one. Apple wants to trademark "Apple Core" for their OS kernel and since they do business with Intel now, they're in some negotiations.
That was pretty good! I pulled a business and legal argument out of my ass that sounds plausible! Get it - "Apple Core"! Funk in A, I need to market myself for some of those seven figure Fortune 500 consulting jobs! The above is the kind of horseshit that gets you in the door!
American Airlines and their Sabre booking software. AA had a tech edge back in the 70's with their software. Other airlines actually rented, not licensed, AA's software.
In a nutshell, I think corps think that their software is soooo competitively important, that they don't want to release it - regardless of how bad it is.
FTFA: Fox said Essent's biggest concern is that the blogger has said some hospital employees have given him patient records. Even though they have not been posted on the blog, Fox said this represents a violation of federal law and the company needs to find the employees who are doing it.
IF that is true, then there absolutely needs to be an investigation. I'm all for allowing folks to honestly criticize care and use medical documentation that was authorized by the patient, but getting it without patient authorization?! I would have a problem with the employees that gave it to him. If the blogger is on to something, then he should approach the patients involved and ask them for the information. In this day of litigation, I'm sure most patients would jump on board for the chance of suing for $$$.
FTFA: This has allowed them to verify claims by human rights organisations and ethnic groups that Burmese soldiers are committing human rights atrocities.
Don't you just love it when technology developed for governments for their "reasons", whatever they may be, are then used to make the World a better place?
But I'm not going to run out and buy a Mac! I don't like the fricking hardware, frankly,
What about the hardware don't you like? Honestly, I'm really curious. My wife wants a laptop and I showed the Macbooks and she liked them - except for the part of charging $200 more for a black case.
and since you have to buy the hardware to use the OS, screw it, I'm not using the OS.
As a fan of business history (yeah, I'm weird), in the past private citizens did what the Fed does today Want an example? Read any biography about J.P Morgan. In every biography that I've read, he stepped in and kept the US from going into horrible depressions. Did he do it for his own interests? Yes. But his interests were in line with the well being of the country's financial health. BUT, folks were quite suspicious of his interest and demanded a Government solution to the problem of our country's boom's and busts and money supply issues - we got the Fed. My opinion: Morgan did it better but he's gone and I don't there's anybody alive today that would have that kind of character.
i think the biggest concern is coming up from 2 groups, 1st group is obviously the people that think it is all a big plot to control them, and the 2nd would be people that put alot of effort into hiding there pr0n/online dating habits from their spouses or authorities starting to get nervous about another way for them to get caught
Or how about the US Government deciding to execute a gigantic dragnet and grab everyone who has read Al-Jazeera and posted something somewhere that says that "we deserved to get bombed" - which I've seen on this site here many times.
Hey, anytime you want someone to write an automatic update service that reboots your computer in the middle of the night just to upgrade firefox, let us know, I'm sure someone will be happy to oblige.
What I want to know is now that windows update became microsoft update, how long before we get an update system that anyone can advertise their upgrades on, perhaps using some sort of signed system that prevents people from uploading IE 13.8 for everyone to install?
These snide comments towards MS don't help. IF you're a member of the F/OSS community, please stop it. You're only hurting the "cause". The users out there just want something that'll keep their computers secure and working. By all means, if you folks in the F/OSS community want to charge for your services - go ahead! But don't bash MS. Take the high ground! Show us why you're better - don't insult us - don't be the "Comic Book Guy" on the "Simpsons".
Some of us know you're better but it's hard when we're, along with the others and MS, are insulted. Insulting your competitor is sooo common that folks consider THAT to be FUD.
In other words, insulting Microsoft is considered FUD by most people and it only makes YOU look like an idiot.
When the copyrighted material used is instantly recognizable on its face (or by ear), or even by the listed title of the video, what constitutes sufficient "credit... for the source"? Reproductions of the complete closing credits? What about incorrect attribution of the second unit of a production that had no part in the clip used?It isn't like the Russians using footage from Titanic to claim the North Pole in a way that tries to conceal the source. It's more like taking clips of The Daily Show featuring Jon Stewart at his desk and a Comedy Central bug in the corner.
If video can be found with a text search term, how can it not be sufficiently crediting the source? It's the stuff you can't find that way that would be not attributing the source.
Your post is complete nonsense.
If someone's material is one the web in complete form and without permission it's a copyright violation. Period. You deserve to be sued and lose!
Ok. I have Firefox 2.0.0.4. When I first downloaded it, all of a sudden I started getting these "update errors".
Now, being a good F/OSS geek, I went up online to find out WTF the problem was. Well, there was this series of directions to follow. I followed them to the tee. Still nothing. Then I saw a post about my "Firewall" being the problem. Well, I turned it off - no change. BUT, when I was logged in as an Admin, no problem. Interesting. The Firefox folks were insistent that it's my firewall.
So, I went in and gave the Mozilla directory full access rights (this is in Windows XP) and everything is working now.
So, is Firefox on my machine secure? Would the typical user have to deal with this security problem with IE - (NO)? How many of you are going to call me or imply that I'm an idiot for not being able to use Firefox correctly?
Few things piss me off as much while driving as heading down the highway at 65, and seeing someone "merge" into my lane from the on ramp doing 45.
What the fuck are you doing 65 in the right hand lane?!?
I hate it when I'm behind some truck, old person, or whatever, and then I have to merge onto the highway and there's some MORON who wants to cruise in the fucking right hand lane - at 65+ MPH! I can't merge so I have to slow down even more to get into a space of cars. Of course, there another moron who's cruising in the right hand lane who's on my ass honking his horn because I'm in his way! Oh! And the next off-ramp isn't until a couple of miles - before you get pedantic.
Some folks just get a bunch of musicians to do something that sounds similar to what you want to do. The best example is the "Rutles". That show had a bunch of "Beatles" sounding music, but none of it was.
Fighting is a losing battle. Go around, over, under, or sideways or anything else legal that will make them realize that they are losing revenues by being too tight.
I go up to YouTube and I see posts of full clips of copyrighted material. I don't see anything about permission and a little credit, if any, for the source. You're not going to win a "fair use" argument against YouTube when that shit is going on. Said copyright holder can just go up there and do a search on any TV show or movie or music video and find thousands of copyrighted material that was uploaded illegally. And a jury will agree with the plaintiff. I know because I do in most of these cases.
There needs to be a thousand examples of "fair use".

I didn't know what it was either and, to be honest, I'm not even sure if the link I've provided is the same thing.

I don't understand German very well so I translated your statement on Babelfish and this is what I got:
"those, more spammer, those!"
I don't get it? It must be a German Idiom.
I don't I've ever seen a privacy policy actually enforced. I usually take those things as not being worth the paper (bits) that they're written on.
