I think the suggestion that it's brain-dead would work with your analogy thus. It's like going to a gas station and walking around a gas station that only sells Doritos and handing them a bag of Kettle Chips. Presumably, their system should read the bar code and tell you that they aren't sold there (how can it figure out how much to charge if they don't sell that product).

If you offer to license part of an article, you would similarly expect the AP system to at least do some sort of sanity check to see if the text you're quoting came from that article.

What if you made up a quote like "Today, Reuters announced they were declaring bankrupcy" and licensed it from the AP. Could you then attribute that quote to the AP? Do you think their system should allow that?

I think it's really because sometimes the goals of management can be different than those of game designers. If you're running a game company you don't really care if the games the company makes are "good" as long as they sell well. Game designers understand that and may have to bow to pressure from above to make a game more marketable (which often doesn't mean better). Now, you'll cry, 'but wait, good games will sell better'! But, that isn't necessarily the case... and that's how we end up with tons of cookie cutter "safe" games.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just trying to respond to the "I don't understand WTF they're thinking" thing.

It seems like quite a few people on this thread have played DX1 multiple times through but I can understand if that's not your thing (I think I only beat it once). However, if you're stressed out by having to make choices about your career path along the way, go read a character creation FAQ before you get going. You won't have to spoil the story and you'll know you're not training up useless skills. Or, you can play the game a few times through trying out different paths like other people have suggested.

I'm glad I played oblivion that way as the leveling system could severely nerf your character if you do it the wrong way. I don't remember how DX1 worked, though.

Or, maybe its that while Obama had no control over what his parents did, Palin presumably has some control over what her daughter does. Stop with the FUD.

I'm assuming you also laid the cable that connects it to the internet and generated the power that it's using and part of the power that all the servers that pass your message along are too. That must have taken a lot of time out of your daily routine of growing your own food, weaving your clothes and building your house. Did you help hoist a community cell tower to run your cell phone? Where did you go drill for the oil that was used in the production of the plastics that are in your computer?

I think those are the type of reasons people suggest you must want to live in a hunter/gatherer type society to provide for yourself. Sorry, I'll stop feeding the trolls.

When I saw that the class action had been settled for a fixed sum of money that Rockstar would end up paying regardless of my submitting a claim or not, I decided the best thing I could do would be to make my claim and then buy GTA4 with that money.

Since I didn't particularly agree with the reasons for the suit, I would have foregone the money if I'd known it would hurt the case of those who submitted it.

However, the settlement was not just $5 across the board. You can view details at the settlement site (http://gtasettlement.com/) but if you had proof of purchase (like I did), the offer was $35.

The problem was with the aol merger, they gave aol user names precedence over the netscape ones so I had to change my account name one time. If you had an aol user collision, you may have been screwed.

netscape.net just redirects to netscape.aol.net now.

There are ways to mitigate the ambush factor. For example, confine opponents to certain areas (that are smaller than the levels). Allow all the NPCs in each area to congregate (I mean, that's a strategy they should employ). I think some sort of real time balance system would also be helpful. Maybe make the NPCs weaker the higher the percentage of real humans there are. Maybe balance the levels assuming all NPCs will be human controlled and add extra computer bots if there aren't enough humans playing. Maybe use some sort of skill ranking for people who control the NPCs and have that determine how many NPCs there are on a level (or which types of NPCs they can control... as you play the NPCs more, you can become bigger and badder creatures).

What seems key in this type of game is getting people to actually sign up to play as an NPC. I think they should offer a free client that lets anyone play as an NPC while only people buying the game can be the hero. They could limit the power or level of NPCs used with the free client to lure people into buying the full game.

When we got into an area where she had a definate idea of what she wanted (and I was more lost), we would switch and I would learn from her process while helping her keep things logical and in order. At other times, I would take part of the project and work on that myself. Be flexible.

I would suggest both of you talking over the design before doing anything that way you both know the direction the project is headed. Make sure your partner is comfortable asking questions like, "why do you want to do X that way". Much of the time, you'll have a good reason, but you'll probably find some of the time, you'll like your partners suggestions.

You'll both end up learning about how the other thinks and the work will be split up into individual as well as pair parts.
