    Mod parent up. I frequently calculate costs of things before I venture off into lands unknown. Building a DVR was pretty sweet.

    Additionally, if you 'roll your own' you can do things like I've done. I have 2 Media Center based systems that have access to a 4TB storage system with full DVD rips of all of my movies as well as all of my pictures. MyMovies keeps it all organized and up to date with IMDB.

    Try that with your tivo.

    For burning DVD's I use ImgBurn...it's easy, does what you ask it to do, and doesn't install a whole host of garbage.

    goddamnit...mod me down, but it still drives me nuts when people call it "Blue ray"...it's like calling it "Fiber Channel"...or constantly referring to them as DVD-V disks. The technology is called "Blu-ray"...it's stupid, but if you can't get the name of the technology correct, then I can't take your post seriously.

    Now I'm going to get back to surfing on the internets.

    Locking to the serial number would certainly up the difficulty for copying, but it won't make it impossible.

    Really, all I'd think they'd go for is impractical. Much like piracy of HD movies for the present, ripping/encoding them just takes too long (for me anyway...I like to keep copies of my DVD's on my NAS for easy viewing anywhere in the house...or back yard).

    Good point. There are a lot of factors to take into account. I just felt like his post may have been a little misleading without specifying purely random I/O.

    Those IOPS aren't spot on, you've got to take into account sequential vs. random. I've got a USB drive here that barely pushes 25 MB/s, and has a seek time of ~6ms (old ide in an old usb case...mostly for beating with a stick), yet I can get ~2000 IO/s using sequential reading.

    Otherwise, that's a good explanation.

    I'll be a first time voter in this presidential election. I didn't just get my green card or just turn 18 (I'm 27), I've just been too lazy to vote.

    I'm fairly sure I'm not the only one. If nerds want to make a difference, getting off our collective asses and voting is probably the most effective thing we can do.

    Also...just got an SSD...completely changed the way I feel about restarts...15 seconds is not a long time to wait.

    Oh yeah, also...anyone know a good place to register? It's been almost a decade since I've done that.

    I recently had a graphics processor die on my system and was stuck using a TNT2 w/ 16MB for a week, and every time I went to a page with flash ads, it was hard to scroll because the CPU was pegged out.
