I've been able to tell sometimes simply because infected .jar files are detected in a scan of the system, but that's not really a reliable way of telling.
Flash updates seem to be much more reliable in terms of asking to install the update than Java. In 99.9% of infections, I see an out-of-date version of Java installed on the system.

    (1) "Mayor Tommy Battle" and his "task force to include 25 community leaders" does not equate to Alabama congresscritters, Alabama citizens in general, or the tea party movement.

You are absolutely right. As an Alabamian, I can tell you that there are plenty of people here who aren't included in that. The political situation here is quite screwy, but appears to be on the brink of changing at least somewhat. The corrupt Birmingham mayor has been convicted and sentenced, the Jefferson County Commission is hopefully about to be overhauled (we're trying!), and public sentiment for our idiot governor seems to be sufficiently negative that we might have a chance of making that situation better as well.
What does this have to do with the topic at hand? Alabama is well-known for being "behind" in many ways. In fact, the running joke here is that the only state worse than us at many things is Mississippi. The point is that there are plenty of people who are trying to change this backwards system. Sure, there are plenty of people who support it as well, but don't just assume that the news reports are indicative of all of us.

The reason people say that a judge declared something illegal is that in order for there to be consequences in such a case, there must be a trial. A trial will always go through a judge, so a judge always has to interpret the law. Part of this interpretation depends upon past precedent...therefore it is possible that if the next judge isn't bright enough to recognize a bad precedent when he/she sees one, he/she will follow the precedent. This further strengthens the precedent for later cases.

I haven't gone to church regularly since my childhood (and know a fair number of people who also don't attend), and nobody really pays attention. In the past, I've worked with and been friends with gay/lesbian/bi-sexual men and women. I haven't seen anywhere NEAR the level of bias you're suggesting. I don't think you get it. He's basically saying you can use unlocked phones that AT&T doesn't sell on AT&T service. He DOESN'T mean using T-Mobile service with their towers/network.
T-Mobile is the same way - I'm currently using an unlocked Motorola Z6 bought straight from Motorola on my T-Mobile service. They won't provide tech support for the phone, but you can use it just fine.
So, if you unlocked your Sidekick and put an AT&T sim card in it, it would work on the AT&T network without the problems you describe.
The situation you describe has to do with roaming agreements AT&T has with other carriers, such as T-Mobile.
Very often I'll search for network and I'll see a Cingular/AT&T tower, and it won't allow me to register. It's because T-Mobile doesn't have an agreement with them for that particular area, therefore no permission to register on their tower. By the same token, the agreement in the area you were in probably only allowed a certain number of GPRS connections from T-Mobile users in order to ensure service for AT&T customers.

If I've misunderstood, please correct me.

As a side note - I also bought XP the day it came out (Oct 15 2001). I thought it was a huge improvement over 2000, honestly. Although the first thing I did was enable the classic start button and look. ;)
I got Vista through MSDNAA the day it was released. I used it for 8 months and just couldn't stand the slowdowns and bugs, and switched back to XP.

Things aren't slow at the moment...but wait until I get a few more tabs open in FireFox, start up uTorrent, etc.
Sometimes under moderate load, the mouse stops responding completely. I've *never* had that happen in XP. Why? I don't know. I thought Vista was supposed to be better about I/O than XP?

Are you sure that it's not just her location not having good signal quality?
I'm sure that sounds obvious, but it happens to me sometimes, depending on where I am. I'll appear to have a low signal but I'll lose my signal just long enough to miss a call, but a few seconds later my phone's back on the network and notifies me of voicemail, all without the phone ever realizing it lost its signal.
It appears that you don't have a phone, so you have no other metric for seeing how the signal should be at any given place.
Assuming you haven't already, I would find a friend with a phone on the same network as your mom's and see if it has the same problems in the same places.
Also, depending on the carrier, sometimes if you tell them you're having problems such at the ones you're experiencing, they'll try to make some sort of arrangement to swap for a different model, especially if you threaten to cancel it and get sent to the customer retention department.

    Hope this helps.
