D has 3 disadvantages
Lack of available libraries
Lack of support in Linux or MS-Windows
Lack of the letter "C"
The last one is serious, any language without this is not taken seriously by programmers and no matter how wrong, badly designed etc. C/C++/C# is, any other language no matter how correct/easy/powerful cannot compete....
Linux is not Unix (it's not certified) OSX is not Unix either (it's not certified)
Because of the naming X.Org/GNU/Linux or whatever people insist it is called.. as an operating system means that OSX should be OSX/Darwin/XNU(Mach-4.3BSD)??
Arbitary codes like this and One time pads have been proven (when done correctly) to be absolutely secure, whereas all encryption in theory is insecure (the only exception is quantum encryption)
Skype is a well known protocol, with a know encryption system, and is not secure....
I have bought games I didn't like, so now I am careful what I buy
If a game costs £10-£20 I might try it, more than that and I need to be convinced it it worth it
A lot of people seem to be in the same mind as me (and were before the Credit crunch)
This means they are selling less games than they could because the price is too high, if they lowered the price it is likely they would sell many more... basic economic theory, basic sales theory is to know your customer base, and your potential customer base, they seems to only be selling to people who already buy games, and not to people who might buy games?
The main Google page does all sorts of tricks to load quickly... so of these are not standards compliant... but render correctly in all current browsers.... Google *will* make sure it renders in IE8 as well...
Google is not an example of a bad website, it is an example of a site that will make sure it renders correctly (and as fast as possible) in all browsers
They used to put EULA in the box that breaking the seal on indicated you agreed to it...one court case later and they don't do that anymore
Now they force you to click on an OK button to say you have read and understood an agreement they do not give you the opportunity to print out or save... it is a little more likely to stand up in court.... but only slightly
Some now give you a print and/or save button...for this very reason
It's software... not a physical object... if fact it's not even that it's a licence....
The costs charged for the downgrade are for someone taking the PC off the production line re-imageing the drive to the XP image and re-testing it with the XP testbed.... time is money and this takes extra time
Microsoft *may* not see anything from this at all...? -1xVista +1xXP =~ 0
".... before you have a design spec for the car please specify the complete detailed part list and which suppliers you will be using, Oh and I don't actually know anything about software so I won't actually understand the list but I will look at the T&C's of the companies you will be buying from..."
It is equally ridiculous... what parts do you need.. I don't know give me a spec and I 'll work out a reasonable list out BEFORE I start using them....
Asking is not the problem it's the point of the design process he asked....
...and I won't run it, nor will any of my users....
Update my system.. ok I just go in the package manager... no updates.. oh well
Social engineering works both ways, If you make sure you never, ever, send updates via email then the users notice it's unexpected and ask first... Too many Windows systems are updated by users clicking on links in/attachments to emails... and far too many websites give download and run links for Windows systems so that the users expect it to work like that
Linux does not make hijacking and exploits impossible, or even that difficult... but it does make it inherently less likely that the simple ones will succeed (don't run as admin, make it painful to run downloaded files, update via package manager not by running a program/script)
Since the shuffling machine is a machine it is a perfect shuffle, or because they do not want a perfect shuffle it is deliberately imperfect i.e. it effectively unsorts the cards in a predictable manor and this too can be factored in to a card counting system.... it just makes it nigh on impossible for a human to count cards...
The Pirate Bay is a search engine for Trackers - what it searches for and indexes are torrents rather than websites or documents/pictures etc on websites... but it is a search engine....This is not illegal and no-one can claim it is....
But it is also a tracker server as well and this is what the case is about... is this illegal or not (in Sweden)? Currently the law in Sweden has appeared to be that it is but some people are not sure and want to test this (or there would be no case)
Piracy is not the issue, harassing people involved in legal acts is... the Pirate bay has operated legally (under Swedish Law as is stands) but has been hounded and threatened repeatedly by large corporations and industry bodies (mostly from other countries) and oddly most/.ers think this is wrong....
Or maybe they are that rare beast an informed IT journalist (they do exist!) who uses BitTorrent for legitimate purposes and has used TPB to find them in the past....
There are (shock horror) links to *non-copyright*, Creative Commons, and GPL material on TPB as well as the vast amounts of copyright material....
If the Commercially run prison can have no influence on who or ho many people are sent to jail or to which jail then they can operate commercially and have no effect on the justice system
If they have the ability to influence the judges in their sentencing or influence where people are sent then they should not be run commercially.......this is another argument for old fashioned British judges who were always laughed at for being out of touch... but it made them very hard to influence
Card counting is not illegal, but as in any private establishment they can ask you to leave, at any time, with no reason given, and they can ban you, again with no reason given.... the only thing they cannot legally do is not give you your winnings.. unless they call the police and charge you with defrauding the casino..
There is a difference between "I don't know what this is doing so I cannot do it" and "I know exactly what this is doing and I cannot do it" one is lack of knowledge one is deliberate
It seems that Microsoft is going further an further down the route of "this is not your machine"... well it is and formatting the hard-drive and installing something else will prove it....
...and where do they put the copy of your Birth certificate? The document is copyright to the issuer and cannot be reproduced without written consent (it is not yours) so cannot be stored on Wikipedia or On Commons and so is not a valid reference....
Even if you are the best and primary source of facts, what you put on Wikipedia is at best hearsay since you cannot prove you are you.... simple solution is to publish your autobiography and use it as an authoritative source...
They live practically everywhere including in boiling acid, semi liquid rocks, extreme cold, and on black smokers as above... it seems that everytime discounts an environment for carbon/DNA based life someone else finds life there...
I doubt there are many niches for non-carbon based life around for them to exploit on Earth.... other planets may have different forms of life...
I was quite happy with Windows NT - The first version of Windows that was stable I upgraded to Windows 2000 because of the new interface and better tools I upgraded to XP because I was promised better compatibility and a new user experience
I have one machine *still* running win2K because I hate the interface, and don't need the extra compatibility....

How about adhere to the standards *and* be compatible ....
IE8 is incompatible with IE6 and IE7 *and* not standards compliant ...

You can lose your data by
A bad drive
Accident (Delete, whoops... )
Your system becoming unusable
Malware deleting files
This is what backups are for .... if your system is still running and free from malware (now) you can just restore the backup, in a few moments
If the malware runs as root then it's a case of reinstall from the ground up then restore all of the the backup ...(Windows default)

The "Classic Style" is NOT the same as the Windows 2000 interface .....
the difference is that Apple have always sold retail items - Macs, iPods, iPhones ....
Microsoft was a software company, who now sell XBox/360 and Zune ....
