The problem is likely much worse. Few events that should make the news are more quickly swept under the rug than accidental shootings. The ones that do make it through end up either buried in the back-most of the back pages, or written off in creative ways. A particularly egregious example of the latter made the slashdot front page years ago as Accidental Wii Suicide when a toddler got ahold of dad's loaded, unlocked revolver that was sitting within her reach and killed herself.

And of course what happens to the gun owners (if they are lucky enough to not be the ones shot)? Generally nothing. Not even charges investigated, law enforcement just says "shit happens" and walk away.

I have been calling for single-payer socialized medicine in the US for decades myself. From my vantage point the 2010 bill is the largest corporate handout in the history of government, and it made many things much worse.

Yeah, it's great to know the information, but it sets you up for a lifetime of getting fucked by the insurance companies (not that the 2010 "affordable care act" didn't set that up regardless).

Slashdot is hosted in the US. The employees for Slashdot all work in the US. The majority of slashdot readers are in the US. The majority of slashdot commenters are in the US as well. If they want an informed audience and an informed discussion it would be worth pointing out that three of the four brans listed don't sell Diesels in the US.

  9. The point here is that when the headline says it expands to Honda, one might errantly assume it includes Honda vehicles that are available here in the US (as the VW Diesels are). If the headline was expanded to specify "Diesel vehicles from ..." then it would be more clear. There have been emissions scandals with gasoline-powered cars in the past, so specifying that this applies just to Diesels would be useful.

  10. Honda Diesel? on Emissions Scandal Expands: Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1, Informative

I know they are available, but they are of no relevance in the US as you can't buy a Diesel-powered Honda in the US for any amount of money. Anyone who does not adhere to the conservative agenda is labelled a "socialist" (generally by people who have no clue what socialism actually entails). I haven't decided yet if I like the TPP or not - particularly as we haven't know the full details of the deal yet - but most slashdot members decided long ago simply because they heard it was something that Obama wanted.

That is logically sound, indeed Reagan is too liberal to be a republican. However one of the unshakable requirements for republicans is to praise him regardless; and they are not bothered by the hypocrisy (indeed they don't even acknowledge it). Oh, Medicare Part D was WAAAY bigger handout to corporations than ACA.

I disagree. Medicare Part D only allows Medicare users to purchase prescription coverage, but does not force it. Some people opted not to buy it for any number of reasons. The ACA, however, makes every living American an obligate consumer of the health insurance system and most of us have no option but to buy it from a for-profit company. Couple that to the fact that it gives them even more power over the consumer than they already had (which was not easy to do, but congress found a way!) and it is hard to see how anything could ever be a bigger handout.
