Psst. It's OK. Not everybody has to agree with your views. Part of free speech is being told to shut up sometimes. Now, if the gov't is silencing you by force, that's a different matter.
It's no fun if you get all rational about it. Nobody actually gives a flipping fuck what text editor you use. This argument is ritual by now and here for everyone's continued enjoyment.
I'm pretty sure in common parlance, "laid off" implies the employee wasn't at fault (the online dictionaries are not being particularly helpful here). Anyway, point taken, I don't mean to make a big discussion out of this:-)
Yes, I understand that there can be mitigating circumstances like you describe. However, given the information at hand, it certainly seems that the company acted unprofessionally. If there was such a drastic reason for her termination, I doubt she would have made an issue of it.
To "demonize" means to "portray as wicked and threatening." (OAD) I am merely calling them unprofessional, not evil. If you have to lay someone off, you have to lay someone off. There are ways to do that professionally and ways to not.
I'm not demonizing the company. If she was "laid off," it implies she was fired in order to save the company money. Doing that indelicately, considering her situation, was unprofessional.
I for one am tired of waiting! However, independent music has been making progress, and we are far better now than we were ten years ago. We have good music blogs that provide promotional mp3s, iTunes and Amazon (I believe) are both dealing with independent labels (iTunes indie section, is insanely great), sites like last.fm and favtape.com provide a means of leagally listening to music. Albums cost less than they used to: $10 or less compared to some CDs that cost $22? (I haven't bought a new CD in a long time... are they still so expensive?) eMusic is even cheaper (of course a lot of their content is deliberately misleading crap, but I digress).
The beginnings of a shining revolution in media are here and have been growing. Of course that doesn't stop such travesties as DMCA, DRM, erosion of fair use, etc.
P.S. Has the ASCAP been fucking around in anyone else's hometown lately? In my hometown in Columbia, Missouri, we have had the ASCAP basically shut down our "open mic nights" for anyone who doesn't pay some rediculous ($thousands) protection money. The one business owner I talked to couldn't afford that, and the ASCAP goon had scared her good *even though typically no commercial content is sampled or covered at these events!* Result: local venues catering to independent music have been nearly completely shutdown.
OK two things. I may be missing something, but I don't see the correlation between the stock market and all the actions of all presidents (what was the make up of congress at the time, for instance, and I don't see how the President has that direct of an influence on the economy).
Not to mention... that this current financial crisis is the result of... Republican economic policy.
While I would largely agree with you (trickle down is wrong either way), it is debatable or at least debated. Plus, you can't conclude from that single "fact" that the federal Democrats thus have our interests in mind (non sequitur).
Anyway, I'll check out the Times article. If you'd care to, I'd be interested to hear if you have any further insights as you bring up an interesting point. Anyway, I have to say that it'd be hard to convince me that any benefit to the general public on either party's behalf is either accidental or calculated to sway public opinion for the most part.
Queue Republican blaming the current "crisis" on the Democrats and giving "facts" that back him/her up in 3...2...
Unlike the republicans, the democratic party has a lot of people with their own views.
Ha! Almost spit my Mountain Dew all over my desk. If only a decent party had a chance in America... to claim that the Dems' federal politicians are better than the Republicans' or vice versa is shear wishful thinking. Seriously. Neither party is looking out for you at the federal level. There are the rare exceptions in both parties who actually have their heart in the right place, but those are few and far between.
There's nothing wrong with treating yourself to a fancy meal every once in a while. That isn't really analogous to paying $180,000 to have your dog cloned. And for the record, you shouldn't be driving that SUV, you should be content with your millions in the bank, and spending $10,000 on shoes is wrong too. There's a difference between "making yourself happy" though minor indulgences and "making your self happy" through wanton displays of waste and thoughtlessness.
I agree. If a cop has reason to pull you over, and you're obviously intoxicated, then fuck you. You are putting others' lives in danger and there is no excuse for that..08 BAC is a joke, though. If you can't hold two beers in an hour what kind of a drinker do you think you are? Seriously, I have never seen someone get wasted off of two beers (to the point where the are physically impaired). Hell, I've seen 90 lb women shotgun a couple beers in a row with no visible affect. Sure, that's because they have a higher tolerance than a lot of people, but the point is.08 BAC is NOTHING and they would be "drunk" according to the law.
Drinking and driving is fine. "Buzzed driving" IS NOT drunk driving. (Does anyone else have these stupid PSAs where they live?) Drunk driving is unforgivable and dangerous. STOP MAKING THESE LAWS THAT TRY TO TURN EVERYONE INTO SNIVELING PANSIES!
Strangely, this is also the largest complaint about Office 2007: Microsoft moved everything and now no one can find anything.
Right! It's annoying to have to learn a new interface to do the same things you already knew how to do. If we could standardize the UI for all applications we would only have to learn a UI once (and how to customize it). Why should I care if I am "in" MS word, when really what I am doing is editing text. Why should the UI change when I am browsing or listening to audio? Having one UI for the entire computer would not only be great to power users, but also for those just learning the computer.
The real issue is that it's about time to decouple app code and UI code. Why should our "command area," e.g. menu bar vs ribbon vs keyboard vs voice etc., be solely dictated by the apps we use?
Ever notice how the federal politicians are always closely tied (well, at least through lobbyist support) to multinationals such as the ones being discussed? I doubt it is a coincidence that tax laws are not stronger, although there are obviously other considerations as well. International law is tricky in that if you are too soon to regulate loopholes like tax havens you will have a disadvantage at drawing the money and business of the multinationals in the first place. Whether that's actually a bad thing for the citizens of the nations involved is debatable.
Drop a chimp in a lake and he drowns. Pull him out before he dies and he'll likely get pneumonia anyhow.
Will he get pneumonia before or after he rips your face off?
Just so you know: you are ignorant.
If being who you are causes you problems stop being who you are?! Stop talking about who you are?! Fuck that.

capitalism is at its "best" when its impartial and impersonal
That is categorically untrue. In fact, that is capitalism's main fault.
No, they should've waited an appropriate amount of time before laying her off. Humans are not machines. Employment is not about money only.

Don't turn around!
Yeah, well John Stewart's an asshole :D
