This should not be modded funny but insightfull. Deer and rabbit shit is both shit, but different color and size.
I have seen and learned almost every GUI out there for computers, including both Explorer and KDE 4.2. Both default Aero and Plasma (the KDE4 'shell') settings... boy when I installed KDE 4.2 the thirst thing I thought was "Dear god that looks exactly like Aero!:-o"
This leads me to the conclusion that since 9/10 avarage Joes doesn't know KDE, one could hardly blame them for thinking they were looking at a 'unreleased version of Windows 7'.
Seriously. Different markets, different computers, different users... why should they ALL have the _same_ OS?
Yeah why not? Why not have all the features when you can keep the same performance and get feature cripple?
Linus Torvalds comes out and says that having hundreds of versions of Linux is a good thing because of different markets, computers, and users, and everyone is like "No duh."
All versions of Windows 7 are the same except for a few programs. Windows 7 is not made for different markets. All these 'versions' of Windows 7 compare to 7 flavours of Ubuntu, namely:
-Ubuntu Basic : Compiz disabled
-Ubuntu Home : Encryption wizard disabled
-Ubuntu Home Premium : Some disabled network features
-Ubuntu Professional : Ubuntu with EXT4 file defragmentation tool
-Ubuntu Business : Ubuntu without nice wallpapers and User Restrictions
Different markets my ass!
Microsoft makes an OS with a mere 6 versions and suddenly everything is too complicated, a hassle, the upper versions are all malware and the lower versions are all underpowered. Where's the consistency?
Good question.
I, for one, wish there were MORE choices. I'd like a PERFORMANCE version that's light on the GUI, light on all of the crapware features, but still able to run tons of stuff. Maybe some people want the pretty GUI but not the extra features... maybe some people want the features but not the GUI.
Get Windows 7, run a tool to strip even more features, run a tool that allows you to make an iso out of your install, burn to disk. C'mon man...
I guess you could have just ONE OS with all of the extra features as add-ons, but what the hell does Joe Sixpack or Grandma Sue know about computers? They'll get the "Home" version for their personal PCs, the "Light" for their netbooks, and the "Business" for their workstations and its almost the same thing.
Who cares what John Doe knows? It's his fault for not asking advice on what to buy, so let him/her face the consequences.
I don't see much of a problem, except that there's not _enough_ customization.
Fake name and stolen credit card number... Pirates gain, others lose.
In any case copy protection doesn't work and in most cases it hurts people that do not pirate. In this case it brings a huge security risk for the legitamit buyer.
Please your customers and forget about these so-called 'anti'-piracy messures.
The same thing goes for proprietary software as well. The entire point here is searching for a free software business model you can make money with.
Piracy is a factor in every digital business sector and there is no way one could possibly avoid that so you might as well don't take that into account.
Create something with a large codebase that other people want to use in their own free software application or game, like a very nice raytracing engine for example.
Now here's the catch; nobody likes to learn a large codebase because it takes a lot of time. Especialy free software developpers because they usualy don't have a lot of time on their hands as they are doing projects in their spare time. So here's what you do to get money; sell detailed documentation and maps of the code of your project. ThÃt would be your product, not the source code.
If you make sure your code is not ugly and unreadable then you'll probably sell a lot of documentation. People that create free software would probably not hasitate at all as they buy OpenGL, C, C++ and ruby books as well.
Your product is completely ethical in terms of free software. It is not nessecary for a developper to buy your documentation, but they will probably do it out of respect and because they just want to save time. In essence, you are selling someone time. Isn't that just the greatest thing?
If you have Linux and Wine and buy games like the latest Price of Persia that have zero copy protection then there is nothing to fear;)
It also comes with a torrent client that you can use to download the DRM-stripped games from http://thepiratebay.org/ that you can browse with the Firefox browser. You can also use that nifty browser to browse http://appdb.winehq.org/ catalog to see what games you should download for your Linux system;).
Too bad your detector is defective. DRM is nothing but encryption and decryption. In most cases the decryption happens by asking for a key on a remote server. In most cases this needs to be done only once (upon installation) and in all cases you are informed that this needs to happen. EA games for example has a very large text in the bottom left of the front of their retail boxes and VALVe puts a high-speed internet connection in the list of min sys requirements that you need to have to be able to play the game. Great; you're informed that you need an internet connection to play the game! You have chosen to buy such games yourself. It's your own fault if you did and you should stop bitching about it.
The internet connection is only needed upon installation. This goes for EA games and VALVe games. When you log into Steam the client will automaticaly store your account credentials on your computer. Congrats! You will not need an internet connection anymore to play EA and Steam games!:)
"But... BUT, but...!!!1111one what happens when their servers are taken down? I cannot loginz0rs and play me games anymore:-o OH N03s!!!!" Wrong! EA and VALVe both have tested inhouse patches that will be released when their services go down and the publishers will go bankrupt.
So... all-in-all; You are informed you need internet. You only have to have internet upon installation. You do not need any discs anymore to play. When the service goes down there will be official patches that let you play the game for the rest of your life.
Interesting... In my country we are forced to do most things digitaly through the internet. We have a tax application made by the government with Windows, Mac and Linux versions.
There is a Linux desktop and it is more ready than Windows. There, however, will never be a year of avarage joe knowing what he is doing with a desktop.
Define better. GUIs are sometimes faster and sometimes the commandline is faster. Both have ups and downs in terms of both speed and security. I like to use them both.
What's the problem? IIRC physics in Doom 3 are limited to, what was it?, 30-60FPS? Just freeze and unfreeze the animation every time you draw a frame... big fscking deal...
The Honda manual is right there... next to the other books I found in your car
Same user acount... su... cd /home/root/porn... ls -a... vlc xxx.avi... Ctrl+c... exit...
OMGWTFBBQ!!1111one one one

because it's an easy excuse for bashing MS.
People don't use that point just to bash Microsoft, people bash Microsoft because of stuff like that. The list of crap is just too fscking long.
Seriously. Different markets, different computers, different users... why should they ALL have the _same_ OS?

Now thÃt is a proper DRM system!
If you hadn't unchecked the "Store login information locally" box then you could have played without a connection...
The real matter here is not about having IE installed by default, but about not being able to remove it.
Lol Apple is using false standards lol... lol programming for Apple doesn't make you any money lol....
Lol go to www.digg.com instead LOOOOOOOOOOL
Prey. Play it and complete the game. It has a Linux client too and it's the best FPS, no... game I have played in years.
Blood pumping action? :')

I knew it! The government is full of assholes!
Nah you don't understand... that would be rightious...
Depending on your age and the country that you live in; don't you need to type and print letters, download media and file tax reports with GUI apps?
There is a Linux desktop and it is more ready than Windows. There, however, will never be a year of avarage joe knowing what he is doing with a desktop.
How about a "Top 5 greatest Linux file managers that you should use" with full res HD 1080p screenshot per page with a stupid concl-... er...
*Ducks and runs*
Define better. GUIs are sometimes faster and sometimes the commandline is faster. Both have ups and downs in terms of both speed and security. I like to use them both.
The scene might not look real, but that's exactly what raytracing is showing; a better, more realistical image.
What's the problem? IIRC physics in Doom 3 are limited to, what was it?, 30-60FPS? Just freeze and unfreeze the animation every time you draw a frame... big fscking deal...
Almost completely static FPS FTW :D
