That sounds vaguely familiar of the "Anti-Dog-Eat-Dog" law and the "Equalization of Opportunity Act" in Atlas Shrugged. You can't do something that will hurt the little guy! Of course the little guy can do that thing that hurts the big guy. After all, they never even got a chance! It isn't fair!
Sorry to be a dick, but people who throw out idiotic thoughtless comments seriously piss me off. It's like someone getting pissed off at the high gas prices, and then ignoring all the complexities of how many factors can go into gas prices, and just saying, "It's all the gubmints fault!"
Don't get me started on Hatch. I am so tired of him as our elected official. The guy's been there for over 30 year, and that instantly puts him on my hate list because of how much I am against the principle of "Career-politicians." But he's never going to leave, because we just love our incumbents here. The guy doesn't even live in our state! He has a house in Virginia, and only comes to Utah to raise funds for re-election. What an asshole./rant
Ignoring your spelling, that has to be one of the stupidest comments I've ever read. Capitalism? That's your explanation of why our elected officials are so damned stupid?! Nothing to do with with a politician's greed, lust for power, or simple pandering to the people who pay the bills? No, no, of course not. It's a market philosophy of supply and demand with competition - yes, that very clearly explains why a law with draconian limits, pushed by representatives with pockets lined from Big Media, is going to be forced on our country. Yes, it's definitely our market system. How insightful!/sarcasm
Wow, two good rulings in the space of 30 days. I might just start regaining faith in the judicial process again. Between this and the suit between Autodesk (autocad) and that guy on eBay who was told he couldn't sell used copies online. I thought that the eventuality of that decision was going to be tougher DRM restrictions from the software makers that make sold software impossible to install without some kind of online verification. But this ruling looks like the ball may be rolling in the right direction.
Maybe I'll just wait to see what pans out before I get too excited... I've been severely disappointed in our government many times...
Thank you for giving a well thought out and articulate response. There are too few people like you around. Even though I would probably disagree with you on many things you brought up- it doesn't matter because you sound like you know what you believe and WHY. It's a nice change from someone who just heard that global warming was bad on Sean Hannity....
I see this as a case of abstinence vs sex education. While I am a conservative person, I am in the minority among others that think like me that children should be taught about condoms, not just abstinence and STD's. I'm going to teach my child about sex we she gets old enough (10 months is a little young I think...) But for parents who won't teach their kids the reality about sex, its a good start.
Studies show that there is a statistically significant difference in teen pregnancies & STD infection rates between areas that teach abstinence only and real sex education.
This is the same thing. Some parents will teach their children properly and some won't. Extra education to children about how to use the greatest tool in the world maturely and with safety is a great idea, in my opinion. Scaring kids off the internet because there are predators and violence and sex and phishing and identity fraud is stupid because it doesn't prepare them for the inevitability that internet use will require in their lives. Giving kids the straight up facts and teaching them to be conscious and recognize bad things is way better than saying, "you might find something bad! Just stay off of it!"
You're close, but you're thinking of multiple processors, not cores. XP Home DOES have dual-core support. I have a dual core on my XP Home system that I'm typing this on. But if you have a server board that offers 2 separate CPU's, then you must use Pro. Quad-core processors work fine in Home also - I know cause I just built one recently for a friend.
What features? Unless you need advanced networking to connect your personal laptop to a corporate network, or a few system services like IIS, VERY few people actually need XP Pro. Maybe I'm just retarded, but can someone explain any benefits of XP PRO over XP Home that can't be added by 3rd party software?
Great idea, except for that damn follows along the path to Lake Tahoe, and eventually to many thousands and thousands of residents of California who rely on Lake Powell to get their drinking water. I had a professor who was the president of the Glen Canyon Institute (a group that wants to drain Lake Powell and 'restore' Glen Canyon) and I've read all the arguments of why they think the dam is a bad idea, but they can never come up with a better solution on how to store all the millions of gallons of water for California as well as the 1.3 Megawatts of power it produces for many of the people in northern Arizona (especially since hydroelectric is the most 'green' source of power on the planet tied with solar power.)
I think it started in 1985. Check the section out called "Copy protection for Videotape" here. It also depends on which one is doing the playing and which is doing the recording...
VCR have an old-school DRM chip in them that can tell when the composite cables are plugged into anything that's not a TV that will cause the brightness to go up and down the entire movie, which is really annoying (it even does it on TV's that have a VCR/DVD built in). The point was to make it so annoying that it wouldn't be worth it. Rather than record it to VCR, you can record right to a TV capture card at SD, or a really nice one that records composite cables to get a better picture (harder to find). Or you can just break HDCP (already be done) or AACS (already been done) and on some discs BD+ (in the process) and take the raw video and rerip it to whatever device you want. However, it does take a LONG LONG TIME, even with a REALLY fast processor to re-encode these videos. Stripping the DRM from downloadable videos is harder, because each company has it own format, and if there is just one unified DRM scheme (like in BLurays) people concentrate more on defeating it, than all the smaller companies..
I get really annoyed every time this gets brought up with the claims that any benefits Bluray gives will soon be overshadowed by HD download services. HD download services are great, except I see a few problems with it.
1 - Heavy DRM - Yes Bluray has DRM too, but you can TAKE IT WITH YOU. The technology is still prohibitively expensive to start making portable bluray players, and in dash bluray players for cars, but there is NO HD download service I'm aware that lets you burn the files and keep them forever to watch. They are mostly rental services - basically you download them on your Apple TV or computers, watch it in a 24 hour period and its gone. In time, those devices will be made cheaper, and will become reasonably priced.
2 - Downloadable content doesn't look nearly as good a trueHD stuff does. I realize that for many people it doesn't matter, because the majority of TV's that were purchased early on (and therefore a big chunk of the ones in households) are only 720P. But 1080 displays are becoming the new standard and fewer 720 displays are being made. a 3GB 720 file doesn't offer much more clarity than just a standard DVD. Yes I know, many people are going to shout that DVD's are GOOD ENOUGH. Fine. VCR tapes were GOOD ENOUGH too. So are YouTube videos for some people. Big whoop. Watching low quality 720p on a 1080 display just doesn't look as good as a true 1080 picture with 25-35Mbit quality.
3. To get a decent quality picture, you need to have download a big file, and that requires fast internet connections. American download speeds are pitiful compared to the rest of the world. If you wanted to download a 5GB movie, that's going to take you SEVERAL hours to complete, as opposed to just driving a few miles to the nearest blockbuster r RedBox (which WILL be getting bluray discs inevitably)
4. Bluray adoption has taken off faster than DVD adoption did. I somehow doubt people are going to give up on buying discs they can KEEP and watch OVER AND OVER, with a download service that offers inferior quality, short watching time, and long waits to watch. But who knows, maybe in 2 years from now I'll be eating those words, but I doubt. Anything you can say about HD downloads applies to SD quality movies as well, and DVD sales aren't really being eaten into like people predicted it would downloadable content. Begin modding me down...NOW!
First of all, all these little laptops are really cute, but for anything that's not listening to mp3's, looking at pictures, and surfing the internet you are in trouble. Now I realize that this is what the vast majority of computers are used for, but people overbuy what they need because of what they MIGHT do. People buy trucks bigger than what they need so they can occasionally tow a boat - you also buy computers more powerful than what you need because you MIGHT want to want decent quality video clips. You might want to do some video and audio editing, you MIGHT want to keep more than 8-16gb's worth of data on your computer, and you MIGHT want to use the plethora of programs/ features that are found on XP that simply don't work that well or at all in Linux. I don't know about you, but surfing the internet on a 8" screen with a 800 x 480 resolution screen sounds like a nightmare, especially if you are used to even an SXGA. I personally think these are cute little gimmicks, but only time will tell for sure.
Just out of curiosity, how do you have a double-blind study with circumcision? I mean the point of a double-blind is to ensure that the person who administers and the person who receives some sort of treatment doesn't know whether they are receiving it or not, to eliminate the placebo effect. How on earth can you hide the fact that somebody received a circumcision? I suppose you could create a fake helmet and glue it on... or something...
Sorry to be pedantic, but the concept seems funny to me. I do agree with you that circumcision is a complete non-issue compared to everything else that affects a child's life.
My big problem with this is that EVERY program for the iPhone has to come from iTunes, which means it will most likely be sold. I doubt Apple is going to host any freeware programs that people write out of the goodness of their hearts.
I've actually been very surprised by the quality and ingenuity of some of the programs written for jailbroken iPhones, and I know that these programs will only increase in quality once real tools are released, but I just wonder how hindered it will be because of the inability of people to "just install" programs on it that they like.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. I contemplated putting a [sic], just to be sure it wasn't construed as a spelling error, but I thought, "This is an intelligent community. They wouldn't make smart-ass remarks solely based on grammar and spelling, would they?":)
I really hope the legal system totally tags this guy. If I didn't already know he was a staunch conservative Christian, I would have thought he was a scientologist, just because of how sue-happy he is.
My favorite thing about Jack is the non-sequiter logic he always trots out. "Somebody A murdered someone B, Someone A played this violent video game. Therefore video games are resposible for someone B's death." Only Stephen Colbert comes up with greater syllogisms. (Although he knows he's at least being funny when he makes his). I especially love that he never brings up the 99.9999999% of normal people who play violent video games and DON'T kill people, but that's not sellacious and newsworthy (unless you're The Onion).
Oh well. I can't wait for some psychological journal to critically bash the stupid article that he parrots all the time about how video games cause violence, and replace it with realistic information like people who are already really disturbed tend to GRAVITATE towards violent video games, rather than make them disturbed. A man can dream...
I know I shouldn't feed the trolls, but seriously, can't the admins do something about this? I realize that slashdot prides itself on its free speech, but a few abusive users are turnish/. into Digg.com. Maybe a new "-1 WTF?" moderation that we can easily tag these posts to more easily filter them out. I mean, I try to keep it at -1 so I can check the flamebaits or offtopics when I moderate, but these are getting out of hand.
Now I'm worried I sound like Mrs. Lovejoy - "Won't someone PLEASE think of the children!"
I think we should take a note from modern day politics. I think they should stop referring to music that people downloaded without paying as "stolen" or "illegal" but we should refer it "undocumented music" or is on a "guest-listenership plan"
After all, people are just taking the music that no one wants to buy, right?:D
