I know that HDDVD burners and pretty rare, and BD burners are prohibitively expensive, but is there anyone out there that knows how well these players work with playing YOUR OWN CONTENT that may have been recorded from an HD camcorder, or your own works createdon computer? Or for example, if I took all my standard def south park episodes and burned them onto a single BD-R, trying to convert it into the correct format, would it play on a BD-player? AFAIK, I've never heard anyone mention how nicely those players cooperate with anything but legitimate HD movies.

If they could get a burner to computers, I'd buy that standalone version right now. Then I'd burn all my HDDVD and Bluray rips onto them, and BAM! Problem solved.... 1080p content from all studios at a discount price.

You'd think so. It would seem dark, but only by comparison. Provo is a pretty big city still, and there are plenty of lights on at night (especially if there is a game going on at Lavell Edwards Stadium). The guy in the article said that even being 150 miles away from Las Vegas near the opposite end of the Grand Canyon still isn't that dark because of the lights, even though they are far away. Although there is a difference, probably on 1 or 2 orders of magnitude, between Provo and Vegas. Wahweap marina at Powell is still the best, IMHO.

It is only another 90 minute drive to the Wahweap Marina, and there are less than half the shear walls there and probably 20x the beach area - all soft sand, which is way better to camp in. And it's only a short drive from Page, AZ. If you ever do the Lake Powell house boat trip again, I recommend you do it down there, if possible.

I live in Salt Lake City, and the light pollution here is just like any other city. My favorite place is to visit Lake Powell, near the Arizona border where there are no city lights for at least 50-100 miles.

I always thought it would be nice if we had one day a year where people made a conscious effort to turn off all their lights, like "Star's Day" or some other stupid name so people could have one night a year to keep lights off, but that would inevitably just lead to an increase in crime for that night, so... darn.

This is another example of the house passing a bill with a name but very little effect. Like the earlier poster said, a band-aid for a gaping head wound. I honestly don't think that anyone in the house or senate cares, it's merely a token effort to say, "Hey look! We're at least trying to do something!!" like Bush did with his social security bill, and previous efforts with welfare, prescription drugs for seniors, and a variety of other problems. Maybe I'm just turning cynical but it seems that all action done in the name of politics are designed to line someone's pockets and fixing problems means taking money out of people's pockets (usually people who donate to parties and candidates) - so getting real progress is an uphill battle. Fixing it would require honesty, and last I checked, there wasn't a lot of that left in politics.

Absolutely true. I don't think I have ever bought a DVD in my life that was more than 10$ (with the exception of maybe one or two movies). All the movies on my shelf are ones that were discounted. I don't know why but I think paying more than 10$ for a movie is ridiculous.

I haven't purchased a CD in probably 8 years. However, if they dropped the prices of ALL music CD's to say, 5$ (thereby even undercutting iTunes), I would buy TONS of CD's (let's say 25)
Let's do a little economics 101 styled math lesson.

    0 * 15$/album * (90% profit margin) = 0.00$ from me.
    25 * 5$/album * (30% profit margin) = 37.50$ from me.

Oh, I just pulled those numbers out of my ass. I'm just guessing that the price of an album production after mass-production was around $1.50. It may be way higher or lower- I really don't know, but the point is valid. I know that doesn't calculate what retailers add on either.

I had no idea that something like the RSAC existed. I think it would be great if it replaced the MPAA and the ESRB immediately. I think the rating system is completely worthless.

For example, if I'm going to see a rated R movie, do I care that it is rated R? Well it depends. WHY is it rated R? For Violence? What KIND of violence? Gory torturous SAW/HOSTEL violence? Historically accurate, albeit disturbing, Schindler's list violence? WWII Saving Private Ryan Violence? Braveheart violence? Matrix Violence? Every one of these is on a completely different level. I would NEVER take my kid to see SAW or HOSTEL, but I would take them to see Schindler's List when they got old enough. I don't care if they saw the Matrix because the violence was silly and Kung Fu style. THIS is the type of information that fully allows parents to decide if content is appropriate.

The same goes for sex. Does it show 2 people making love? Scat or bondage fetish? A guy just sitting in a strip club looking at a girl's titties? Violent rape? These are all completely on a different level. Some things I would find offensive and others I would not.

To rate a game M because it is VIOLENT or has SEXUAL CONTENT or LANGUAGE is absolutely worthless. Without something to quantify it or compare against does not give parents the necessary information to make an informed decision, short of buying a game and playing it themselves. Get rid of the LETTER rating system, and rate each area of "possibly offensive" material individually.

As much as we'd like to say "Can't a SysAdmin just remove these comments", remember that free speech means EVERYBODY can say ANYTHING, even disgusting stories like the one above or the racist ones. It's easy to say, "I don't want to the government telling me what I can watch or read!" when it's something we are really interested in, but it's harder to say it after reading the above-mentioned crap. I'm not a fanboy of any kind, but I am hoping that Blu-ray wins, simply because DVD5 and DVD9 discs do not cut it for backing up data when my computer has a TB hard drive. 25 and 50 GB discs are FAR more useful, and will inevitably fall in price once a format is established and large-scale production/adoption begins. I've seen films in both format and I think both are great. I'm sure as hell not going to pay for an overpriced player, because when I get my own PS3 when FF13 comes out and Sorny releases another SKU with stripped down hardware for 400$, I'll have a player (Even though I realize consoles aren't the best movie players by ANY stretch of the imagination.)

I thought it was very even-handed, straightforward view at globalization, outsourcing, and how it effects the American and worldwide marketplace. However, during his closing talks at the end of the book, he makes a very well-worded warning/prediction about the future of this country- that America needs to place more value on it's scientists and engineers or else it will lose them. In a country where MARKETING and SALES offer some of the best paid salaries, brilliant minds will not spend the money, time, and incredible effort it takes to get an engineering degree. We will continue outsourcing our engineers from India and China, and the time will come when China and India will outsource marketing and sales to the US, because it will be what we do best.

In Salt Lake City, we have another company that I hate called PC Laptops that has radio adds about how their computers are the FASTEST ON THE PLANET! Sure, my itunes has to uncheck songs because I've got over 40gb in music. But when I came to the revelation that I don't need or even want my entire library with me all the time because my music I listen to comes in flavors.
