  1. It might not be legal on Non-Competing With Microsoft · · Score: 1

I know that it was recently declared illegal in Israel after a 15 year legal case that ended up in the supreme court there. It might be unenforcable in the courts here as well.
The legal systems are far from being equivalent but still it might signify an inherently illegal aspect of such a contractual stipulation in a democratic country.
Then again, who wants to spend 15 years of his life in court?

  4. It could be bad for MS on Whistler "Anti-Piracy" Tools Tie OS To Machine · · Score: 1

If windows becomes too difficult to use for the average user (which is what a copy protection scheme such as this does) more users might decide to migrate to other OS's. Keep in mind that a large part of window's popularity stems from the fact that many kids grow up with computers running pirated copies of windows. If it becomes too difficult to do, more will cut their computer teeth on alternatives and later on demand them at work.

If you want to install winME over win98, all you have to do is delete or rename win.com (keep a boot disk in handy just in case this doesn't work). That will get rid of the silly "Windows cannot install on this computer" message. At least this was the way to get win95 OSR2 to install over win95. I doubt MS have changed their methods.

Hawking is a physicist and cosmologist and although these may give him a better understanding of earth dynamics relative to the average lay man he is far from being an authority on the subjects of the earth's atmosphere and global warming.
I also think it is very revealing that he came out with such a sensationalist declaration. If it were so blatantly obvious (something on the scale he describes would be) then he wouldn't be the first to say it.

  20. Exchange encapsulates attachments in TNEF on Return Address: Arrogance, MS · · Score: 1

I had this problem for several weeks, at my work, when they switched over from a Eudora(?) email server to Exchange. Suddenly I couldn't receive attachments with my Netscape client. I couldn't even receive attachments from myself. All I ever got, instead of any attachments sent, was a single attachment called TNEF.
At first I did not make the connection between the server switch and my problem (I'm not much of a conspiracy theory fan) and thought it was my Netscape client that went off its rocker. Finally, after a few weeks of aggravation and getting angry at Netscape the sys admin unchecked a checkbox on the exchange server and my problem disappeared.
Apparantly, the default behavior for Exchange was to take any and all attachments in emails going through it (all email, whether sent or received) and encapsulate them (for our benefit, of course) in the TNEF format.
