    amazing that I might be about to praise china, apologies to Wei Jingsheng and those of his ilk, having all linux for the olympics will bring a lot of eyeballs to the linux/OSS concept. How many times during salt lake did NBC do some puff piece on the technology behind the actual putting-on of the games?

    there is something like this in many states. I'm not too keen on the particulars but in Virginia in the case of law one can go before the Bar and do what is called "reading the law". Basically you're an autodidact that has studied the laws of virginia solo with no degree and can now demonstrate that to the Bar Association. This is rare but it is done. Only a few people every now and then actually try it.

    I mean really Canada is just about the only place on Earth an American can visit without fear of being blown up, kidnapped, or er.. blown up.

    lived in Canada for a month. best people on Earth. talk funny though. and you folks do say "eh" alot. don't deny it. you do. I heard "eh" roughly 40 times in one 10 minute conversation.

    it just sounds funny. love you anyway.

    the gulf war started I believe in august when saddam entered kuwait. desert shield started almost immediately, desert storm was a couple of weeks in january.

    I do believe that the gulf war has to go down in the history books as one of the most quickly resolved major conflicts in history (not I said major conflicts, I'm sure there are tons of conflicts that were settled in a day)

    as for canucks, in my house we make fun all the time of the canadian military and their tank but I never fail to remember that in every conflict the US has played a part the canadians were right there with us.

    also, there were movies made about canada's part in ww2 I've seen them.

    how do you bypass the phone company if the phone company is the one providing you the ability to connect to the internet?

    unlike japan and the usa and a few other countries not too many places are getting net connections from high speed cable. hell I live in the usa and I don't get my net from cable.

    the phone companies at some point always figure in your ability to communicate with anyone over wire. they do have shit to pay for.

    their business model really needs to change as one poster suggested to providing high speed net access but that doesn't mean that right now they aren't concerned about lost revenue to VoIP.

    as for your simile it really doesn't hold up. the RIAA doesn't provide the infrastrcuture for me to listen to indie bands. the phone company does, however, provide the infrastructure for me to respond to your post. between me and you there is a telco.

    a possible reason you might not find ogg files on p2p apps is that possibly the people encoding in ogg are not interested in sharing their tunes as they have enough already. also, one more item. For those that use the argument that p2p is good cause it introduces you to new music you wouldn't get anywhere on the radio might I suggest you turn off clearchannel and turn on NPR. My two local public radio stations in southeastern virginia have intorduced me to some of the best music ever made. Give rollie radio a try. 7-9 I think. You can listen online at whro

    where do you get your statistics that ogg people are cheap?

    I happen to like ogg because the encoder is open, it compresses very well, it sounds great to my ears.

    by saying ogg people are cheap are you saying that mp3 people are not cheap? That sounds a little ridiculous.

    Soon as someone makes a portable ogg player I will get it. that simple.

    you steal something you suffer the consequences. Why is this such an outrage? Why is the FBI involved? possibly because its their jurisdiction? Jsut because the FBI is now dealing heavily in anti-terrorism efforts doesn't mean they stop doing their other jobs.

    Look at New York, FBI agents got retasked to anti-terrorism in droves and in the meantime the mafia was busy selling world trade center scrap.

    Poor use of resources? no. They're trying to nip this in the bud before it gets out of control like cable descramblers did.

    Just cause you can doesn't mean you should.

    er, guys, what on earth is your issue?

    its a website. does it really matter how fast you can access it? its a static website. who cares how fast you can ping it. if its taking to long to load, turn your head then look back and you won't notice. besides, we're talking milliseconds. you can't say millisecond in a millisecond!

    I'm going to admit to not only an addiction to Samurai Jack (best American toon in ages) but yes. I love "powerpuff girls". I put that in quotes cause I know some twit will make some chester comment.

    other than that I'm not moved about the changes. I only ever got to see adult swim every once in a while and if its good anime, like any good show or movie, I'll get it on DVD

    she doesn't have to convince any children. No one ever has to convince children. Want to know why? Because anyone under the age of 25 or the age of 35 does not matter in the United States.

    We don't vote. Who gets to make the laws? The people 25 and 35. why am I specific about the ages?

    req. to be a U.S. House Representative? age 25
    req. to be a U.S. Senator? age 35.

    the 15-25 set doesn't mean a hill of beans. Never will until there's a revolution.

    often, ok always, it is said that debian is hard to use but the package management is solid as ft knox.

    well, I'd rather have a solid package management (PM) tool than a simple gui for everything. but now that I've got the solid PM sure go for the solid gui or solid config tools.

    I think debian has it right in hitting the important bits first and getting it right before moving on to somthing else. they don't do it half assed.

    and as for freedom to provide information.

    should we have the freedom to access or provide any information we want? some information really doesn't want to be free. or do you feel that all info should be free?

    and now finally, i feel that the US has more information that really ought not be free than does Costa Rica at present.

    do i think troop movements should be free? no. are they? yes.

    do i think the status of chinese prisoners should be free (such as the recently released Wei Jingsheng)? yes, are they? no.

    do i think the status of the al qaeda/taliban detainees should be free? yes. are they? no.

    does costa rica have taliban detainees? no!

    still not making any sense yet am i? oh well. I can't make sense on every post.

    this survey is meaningless.

    the amount of freedom a press has is proportional to the amount of information they have to dig up.

    how much info do you have to dig up in costa rica?

    rumsfeld censors his briefings to the press cause we're at war. is costa rica at war?

    by the way how many countries prime ministers or secretaries have daily briefings with the press?

    and finally, again who cares? it all comes out in the end. what we don't know now we will know in about 30-40 years anyway and we'll be flummoxed as to why we thought we needed to know so much in the first place.

    case in point. the cuban missle crisis. recently tons of info has been declassified regarding those 13 days. how many of you cared? if the info is irrelevant now it was just as irrelevant then.

    the US is a controversial country. finlan, i think, is not. the US gov perpetrated the Pentagon Papers the Washington Post reported it.

    point? we have more thats not worth reporting but more sensitive to reporting.. do you get what I'm saying? I'm pretty sure that if the government of Finland was involved in as many sticky wickets as the US they would be a bit quick with the red pen too.

    why is it assumed that when new hardware comes out that the "linux geeks" will just figure out how to use it anyway, eventually. why not just create the thing with openness in mind?

    its hardware. why must it be proprietary? the money for this device is in the friggin paper! not the device drivers.

    then I went to the website and learned that unless you use windows its a paperweight. not even a heavy paperweight.

    I didn't even bother to find out how much it was. I really liked the idea at first but upon learning that I need MS IE and .Net in order to use the thing my desire to have one went out the window.
