What about it? Every technique that is described in this article is fully doable on OS X. It has rsync and supports hard links.
Since OS X doesn't include gnu 'cp', you can just use the alternative method described in the article:
Simply replace cp -al a b with cd a && find . -print | cpio -dpl../b
why would anybody who's not at least passively interested in Perl want to know what the creator of Perl says
For the same reason that I enjoy reading (or listening to) Guido van Rossum and Bjarne Stroustrup. Someone who has created a successful programming language might have a somewhat interesting perspective. I say might because most of the Stroustrup I've read reinforces my negative opinions on his language, but that's for alt.mindless.cheerleadering
I've spent seven years working on Leo. I'm getting pretty annoyed about people commenting about Leo without even taking seven minutes to play with it.
Edward, there's only condescending ways to express this: chill out. This is slashdot. Many of the comments are going to be completely nonsensical and several negative ones will be from people who only read the slashdot article's headline.
That said, I grabbed Leo and jumped with glee at the possibilities that lie ahead (how about replacing the text editor frame with a seperately running emacs session!). Thank you. Still, these negative posts really seem to get to you, so maybe you need to find a stress relief activity. My favorite professor had a stroke because he couldn't stop being too high strung.
Bzzzt. Actually, My grocer (Whole Foods) never advertises in my area. And while they do sell produce, I'm such a lazy cook that I was talking about all the packaged goods they sell, like veggie burgers, veggie dogs, breakfast cereal, chips, soy milk. Each of these products exists in tons of varieties, none of which I remember ever seeing an ad for. In fact, Costco has started selling some of them.
When another grocer provides the same products, I buy from them when they offer a better price. Amazingly, the huge chain grocers in my area offer a few organic products, but always at a much higher price. I guess they just don't want my business.
That's funny, because all the products I see at my local Organic grocer are completely unsupported by advertising. How do I pick products? I try a few varieties and when I find one I like, I keep buying it.
Buying into "brand" loyalty is a great concept for extremely high precision devices like cars or jet engines (at least, if you are buying based on reliability history), but brand of cereal? Toothpaste? Come on. Try your alternatives. Advertisements are not altruistic informational messages.
i think most programmers or engineers do not take the company into consideration, when they are being offered a job
And that makes it right? I'd rather take a pay cut or switch industries than write code for the arms industry. If you love working for people whose behavior you have moral objections to, how can you respect yourself in any way?
Aha! Just found the coupon sheet. It was inside one of the plastic bags that had the "Welcome to OS X" book in it. I figured it was just a bland "see the mouse click. Click, mouse, click." new user guides.
So the next question is, does this coupon actually affect the price at all?
If I have to accept even less competition in an already stagnant market (two satellite companies with nearly identical plans and completely incompatible equipment, one cable company in each market with ridiculous pricing) all just to be able to buy a Satellite-ready PVR, I'd rather just keep my VCR. At least my Dish receiver can automatically activate the VCR to record programs.
What I really want is a PVR that includes satellite (Dish and DirecTV) tuners without being tied to a particular provider's service and pro-advertising whims.
After spending several days on trying to get AFS working on OS X, countless emails back and forth on the AFS users list, I never managed to get the server working.
The Windows installer also barfed, hanging when it tried to start the server.
This after I meticulously followed IBM's extremely long "quick" start instructions.

1. DJs pay royalties to BMI and ASCAP
And if these merged songs are sold, then their creators should owe the original artists a percentage of their profits. Instead, you have to plead for permission to use the original work. (If what other posters are saying is true).
This is backwards. A creator should first concentrate on making something, then when it is ready for the world to see they should be allowed to distribute it, with the requirement that the work clearly indicated (say, in the title of the song or on the CD case) that it is a work derived from the original artists.
When some money is actually made, then, finally, the original artists should receive some cash. They should not have the right to say "I don't like your work" because restricting others' ability to create derivative works in no way improves your incentive to create.
2. DJs do not infringe on RIAA's work because the labels don't control public performance rights (BMI and ASCAP do), and "derivative works" rights apply only to works that are fixed in some tangible medium.
So when Paul Oakenfold releases his umpteenth disc of mixes, does he pay royalties? (I don't know the answer to that, but I suspect the answer is YES). Did he sit there for months calling all the original artists asking "next year can I mix your work?," I doubt it.
So, would it be accurate to simply call "autoboxing" automatic type casting? More words, but universally understood already. Sure, you are casting between things that are totally incompatible normally, but that is the same issue with float to int casts.
compairing scripting languages to (at least partially) compiled languages isn't really fair.
Which language is the scripting language here? Python? Python compiles to a byte code which is sent to a virtual machine. Everyone likes to call Python a "scripting" language but what the hell does that mean? Python has a large library, a standard gui toolkit, compiles to an intermediate code for a multi-platform virtual machine.
So what makes Java NOT a scripting language then? Just that you can't run it interpreted? Lame distinction when the interpreter just...byte compiles!
You do realize he was discussing the difficulty of operating on Integer objects? You can't change them, you have to get the value out, then process it, then stuff it into a new Integer object.
Somewhere in the interview Gosling says that he doesn't regret making int, float, etc scalars instead of real objects. He just regrets the object versions being inefficient. Well I wanted to drive a pen through something when I read that. Just TRY doing elegant integer lists with in-place modification of the values. You either make a mathematically second-class citizen object that represents an int, or you make a list of one element int arrays. Anyone have a better way?
there are set ways to approach and solve a problem
Yep, generally.
if you tell your boss that you can't work right now because it just isn't coming to you, you're out of a job.
So I take it you love solving known problems with 60hz florescent lighting flickering in your eyes while your cube mate pounds out high-decibel "Cirque du Soleiel" music and your folding chair stabs you in the back? Are you sure you aren't a robot?
Programming is a mental activity. It is thus appropriate to make all distractions disappear for the thinking individual. For some, special music (ambient!), good furniture, and good lighting are essential.
And to hell with a window. Hands up everyone sitting in a beautiful office with cardboard taped to the monitor and large objects sitting in the window to avoid being blinded at 3pm sharp.
Just curious if you[...]said they'd never buy an Intel chip when they announced the CPU ID because of privacy concerns?
Check, yep. Switched to AMD Duron after that.
Tell me again, why my next computer shouldnt be a Mac?
Funny, I just bought a G4 last week, so I don't have to be a hypocrite for a little while:) Seriously though, Microsoft must have paid AMD some huge cash for this. I loved the part where AMD's CEO says that they can't compete in the server market because all the server os's run on proprietary hardware. Riiiggght.

Welcome to modern psychology based mass marketing. These lessons are derived from political propoganda going back I know not how far. Lest this thread descend into irrelevence, I leave it to the reader to recall who said that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it.
Very eloquent, I just hope that more people come to this realization very soon. Our corporate rule is soon going to excrete the mangled tatters of our constitution or choke on it and die. Most everyone I know could care less. They are also somewhat intelligent, so I have very low hopes.
This one, on the other hand, you have presented as fact
This is a problem when the law allows the litigious to reinterpret personal opinion as "statements of fact". A statement of fact should be completely legal until you explicitly state that the other person has commited an illegal act. We need the "Yes, you can call someone else a dirty rat bastard lying scum [but not murderer or thief]" law.
Didn't we just recently get a/. posting about a judge ruling that statements posted in an online forum are inherently statements of opinion?
Reading your links I have to say I'm damn impressed. After your sharp replies you didn't hear anything? Makes me imagine a whole room of people sitting around surfing the web looking for things they can sue for their parent company. Of course, since they are using pigeon technology, they seem to sue the wrong sites...
[auto factory automation] means that there is a minimilization of inventory present at any given time
Too bad that they can't take it one step further and not have ridiculous car lots full of various models that no one really wants. Why yessir! That puke green one is a $500 discount special!
Why can't they just have a few test-drive cars on lot and then ship you the car the moment it has been built? No more end of the year clearance sales, no more inefficiencies. Just a little bit of patience.
Since OS X doesn't include gnu 'cp', you can just use the alternative method described in the article:

Upgrade coupons? Please expand. I bought a G4 about 2 months ago and I don't remember any upgrade coupons.
