  1. Re:We need a tag for this? on Adblock Plus Maker Proposes Change To Help Sites · · Score: 1

Exactly this. There are a few sites that I must visit repeatedly (for various reasons) that I have no desire to support financially. I will not grant them the right to inflict their buggy flash/java script/animated ads on me just because I have to go there often. Those sites that I do wish to support, in part because their ads are not craptastic, I have already (on my very own even!) whitelisted. I'm a big girl, I can make these decisions for myself without being nagged by the very piece of software I installed to help enforce my decision in the first place.

I agree with this entirely. I'm lucky enough to live in a large, competitive market (Verizon FiOS, TWCable, AT&T DSL) but in my circle of friends I am the exception. I'm the only one who has choices that don't included capped usage levels. And I'm the only one with Verizon FiOS as an option. Consumers shouldn't have to move into competitive markets just to get fair service levels and prices.

I'd actually like to know the answer to that as well. I'm sure RIAA would say it was illegal, but that's to be expected. I know that when you sync an iPod to a new computer it will try to wipe whatever was on it, but that can be worked around. And if the mp3 files are themselves not drm'd?

Well, yeah. Exactly. It's part of the same problem: people not wanting to think about the complex issues society faces. So they'll tolerate government violation of privacy, government censoring of certain types and modes of speech. But if the things they use to distract themselves from how moronic they're being are taken away too, then of course they're going to freak out. It's sad and stupid but not remotely surprising.

I was simplifying by saying country rather than region, I apologize. But I still think it would be a workable solution. Enter your postal code, then go to view the videos and get region appropriate commercials. And yes, it would require a little effort on CBS' part, but it seems like it would be worth it.

Well, if they can tell via IP address or whatever what country a viewer is coming from wouldn't that allow them to serve country specific content rather than just blocking them?

Or if that's not how it works, they could have a neutral start page and then have people select the country they're from and ta da, targeted advertising.

I agree with you. It's incredibly frustrating. And it's not just the tv people, nor even just the US ones. You'd think they'd be happy to get the money/eyes on ads from any place willing to pay/watch. But I guess they'd rather maintain 'control'. And yes, I'm aware that pre-existing contracts would have to be tweaked, but I'm not seeing any effort on big content's part to do that. Idiots.
