The real issue here is Intel, not Apple. There is no point in updating any of Apple's computer line as long as Intel can't get their upgrade cycle running smoothly. Add in all the security flaws and you have another reason not to update anything.
Intel can announce all the crap they want and trickle out a small number of chips, but Apple won't jump on board until they can get mass quantities of CPUs...
Apple would be better off doing their own CPUs....
I worked at the Tagged Photon Lab - that's my PhD advisor Don Summers loading tapes into the Great Wall of drives. We drove the poor folks at Exabyte nuts.

Find out how much product, in dollars, your company produces in one hour on a typical day. That is you max value per hour. Then find out how many people it takes to produce that product. Divide the big total by this number. This is your dollar per person per hour value. Now multiply by 8, then by 5. This is your dollar per person per week value.
I think the bigger issue may not be what language is taught but whether the teaching is applicable to actual scientific uses. As an undergrad astro major I took two CS programming classes, Fortran and PL/1.
While Fortran was the standard when I went into graduate school doing particle physics, it was not as helpful as one might think because of how it was used - learning how to do bubble sorts is nice, but not when you needed to interact with actual hardware, like NIM and Camac crates.
Similarly, when we were building the computer farm to process the data we brought in a sysadmin who just got her MS degree. While she knew a lot about OO programming, she could not swap a drive out of a server.
So what might be useful is providing some general background knowledge of programming methods, system admin, and hardware. One can then learn whatever specific language when needed, etc...
Well, I will probably stick to Drupal 5 for quite a while and am going to customize a third party Drupal theme (Denver) to make it do what I want... I need to be able to work my users into the new Drupal system since I've been using Post-Nuke for 6-7 years now.

I am moving from Post-Nuke to Drupal because Drupal is looking much better in terms of support, modules, and future plans.
