  1. Look for a research opportunity.... on Ask Slashdot: Finding an IT Job Without a Computer-Oriented Undergraduate Degree · · Score: 1

When I was in undergrad for civil engineering, I looked for a computer related job on campus. I ended up in a doctoral research lab on campus implementing the code that the researchers wanted, but had little clue how to do. I got paid to do what I loved. Later, during a demonstration of some research for some corporate types, one of them asked who had done the implementation they had seen. They hired me away from the research lab. This put finishing my degree on the 8 year plan since I was mostly part time from then on, but was making money, learning lots, and having a good time usually.

A big part of getting a computer job is being able to say you have verifiable experience. Experience you can gain on campus can give you this. You just have to look for it. Going around to the labs, and talk with professors there. Some neat stuff out there. For example, my local four year has a lab just for doing human/computer interface, and nobody in there is a real coder. They might not have funds to pay someone, but I doubt they would turn away someone willing to work for the experience.

I can't agree with this. While the above description might fit a lot of people in the corporate world, it applies to many other people working in corporate jobs. I've worked a few places with some truly dedicated HR people that took pride in doing their jobs well and did. I would never have considered them stupid or having failed at everything else. Some people want a low stress 9-5 job for whatever reason...I can't imagine why. In fact, in my last big name tech company, I considered the people working a job like HR to have the brains, since they were reaping good pay and an incredible benefits package from the company, and home every night at 5pm. My engineering team was doing 60+ hour weeks.

I do agree that HR people should not be the entry into a company, since few have a clue about the skills they are looking for.

I used vbox for several straight months doing quite a bit of Linux development using it, hosted on a Win7 machine. Other than missing a few nice to have features I could have used, like drag and drop that VMware has, I had zero issues with it. A lot of the features VMware has I didn't need, so stuck with what was working. The "crap" drivers made the VM as seemless as possible for me, and in full screen mode, was no different than booting into Ubuntu in classic mode (which is what I prefer anyway).

I'd really like to know how many people are genuinely affected by these issues. I can't imagine I'm the only one that had zero issues.

  16. Doesn't surprise me... on 50% of Apple's Revenue Comes From the iPhone · · Score: 1

My informal statistical sampling of sitting on a bench in a mall near Atlanta, GA, told me that at least 75% of the people that walked by me talking on/texting on a phone had an iPhone. Admittedly, that area is rather affluent, but we are talking about a ton of people I took notice of. I often make a game of doing this while people watching; not necessarily cellphones, but other traits. I just happened to notice that a lot of people, even though they were with a group, were all paying attention to their phones and not each other. Depressing actually. Anyway, once I started tracking the phones I saw, the vast majority were iPhones. I was probably there close to an hour, and took a lot of samples.

My thinking at the time, was that if you just spent time at this mall, you'd think Apple had completely killed the cellphone market. I know that's not the case reading elsewhere, but purely on appearance, it seemed that way. Now I know that it simply could be that the people more likely to always be on their phones might like the iPhone more. Younger crowd maybe. I wasn't really paying attention to age. Blackberry users had to work on the weekend, etc. All kinds of ways the stats could be skewed.

Every time I fire up iTunes, I have a WTF moment. Just the "Determining Gapless Playback" feature alone, which pretty much takes over the user interface, makes me wonder how come this "quality" has gone on for so long. Doesn't Jobs ever use iTunes?
