> Give me a break. you are still having to trust others..
Yes, but there are many times more people going over the newest Linux kernel than there are MS employees auditing similar code.
Not to mention that with Linux, you are trusting the expertise of a thousand people with no monetary incentive to lie. MS has a thirty+ billion dollar reason to say it's secure and bug-free.
How would the Google crawlers have any idea what is the body & what is the sig?

> DOS compatibility isn't a selling point anymore
Nope, but Windows compatibility is a MUST. So no, the poster was completely WRONG when he said a Mac Mini is good for 99% of all people.
More than 1% of the people in the world need a computer that can run Windows software. Not to mention, the thing BY ITSELF costs the same as a brand new Dell of equivalent speed (2x processor speed) including a flat-panel monitor! I'd trust the Mac's stability WAAAAY more, but if it can't run any software I need, what friggin good is it?
The poster deserved the -1 Troll mod, because that's what it was. A MacHead trying to convince us that his computer is better than ours. Sure, the hardware quality is, but the price is NOT. The compatibility is not. The upgradeability might as well be NIL (OK, RAM is the #1 upgrade, but even if you can do that, that's about all there is).
> they gave us the Statue of Liberty and helped us win our independance from England. Those two alone should be reason enough for every American to have at least some respect for them
No one from those times are still alive. Things change. We cannot be forever indebted to a country because they did something 200 years ago.
Who I have respect for are the French people who fought and died, or even quietly supported us from France. None of them are alive now.
There are plenty of current reasons to respect them, this being only a minor one IMO.
> How is it fair to watch movies without paying for them at all?
So if you rent a movie, you had better not invite anyone over to see it. You had better not take it anywhere for anyone else to see. You had better not let anyone borrow it while it's rented. After all, all of those people will have seen it without paying for it... Ergo, they are criminals. ?
> Art needs to be free. If artists can't distribute their art freely (and still have enogh money to live)
(Devil's Advocate here) What if that person doesn't want it freely distributed? Being nice (and helping society with free art) isn't mandated by law. Sure, they have the option to not release it at all, but is that not their choice?
Hint, there is no continent called "America." When you refer to the continents, you call them North or South America. When you refer to both, you say "The Americas." When one says just "America," they are referring to "The United States of America," because it's easier than saying the full title.
I thought everyone knew that. Oh wait, you were being pointlessly (and incorrectly) pedantic. I see.
> Yet Slashdot pisses and moans whenever a BitTorrent distribution site is shut down.
So, what you are saying is you don't know what BitTorrent is? Those sites don't host the movies/songs/whatever. Rephrase that sentence with "tracker" instead of "distribution site" and you may be correct.
When you are in a very rare profession that someone needs, you can ask for whatever you want. That's why I.T. salaries dropped like a "mofo." Programmers and admins used to be rarer. But because of the boom, too many people thought it would be a good idea to lern bout dem 'putin machines.
> Are you saying that a TV show IS or IS NOT like a toy?
I am saying everything that exists is equally a toy. The only time it makes a difference is when a person puts a distinction on it. It would be hard to derive that from what I wrote, as I tend to write what I am thinking, outside the context of my "stream of consiousness."
> If they understand, why bother to complain?
I understand why the government expects me to pay taxes. I still complain that I will go to jail if I choose not to, or even if I can't afford it.
I've never cared much for microbiology or fungi or anything, but I decided to look at some info (on www.math.utah.edu) and that looks like an amazingly interesting field! Very neat stuff.
Oh, so if I take away your car, or your bike, and you whine, I can just say "Grow Up" and it's all okay? Okay, you say you paid for those things and they belong to you. He pays for cable access. He pays for the TV programs by watching their stupid commercials. He pays when there is product placement.
What if I take the tree from your front yard and fill in the hole, cover it, make it look nice. You didn't pay for that tree, it was just there, so if you don't like it being gone, "Grow Up."
Just because YOU think something is childish, it isn't necessarily so. What makes you think you are so important that the things that matter to you should be the only things that matter to someone else?
A TV show is not a toy, it is entertainment, just like your CDs or your radio, if you listen to it. Just like your computer. It's a complicated toy and you may even have a job playing with it, but it is still JUST A TOY.
Would you be even slightly upset if OSDN decided to shut down slashdot without the possibility of it ever coming back up again? After all, it's just a "toy..." Some pointless service, no? Pointless was the key word in all of this.
I didn't see anyone claim they didn't understand WHY it is being taken off the air. If they don't, they aren't childish, they are simply stupid.
My point to this wild mass of sentences is that complaining that something is being taken away is never childishm unless your complaining goes past the point of being useful. It's not easy getting the attention of TV Executives, so if you want to do something you have to do it very loudly. Not only that, but these Execs really have no idea how many people actually watch these shows. Nielsen homes are so few that it is statistically f'ing worthless. Not to mention, Nielsen usually boxes go to select homes that already fit into a particular "category." 2-parent, 2 kids, etc.
That's a bit cynical. There are appeals. If a judge makes a senseless decision, you can appeal it, assuming you can prove it was senseless or new evidence appears. If you are not allowed to appeal for some reason, you can still sue the state. Good luck winning, tho.
> Actually.NET is pretty sweet. It's a rare gem of Microsoft success.
Excellent, then you must be able to describe what.NET offers that was not already available (other than taking a couple APIs and slapping them together into one package). Can you enlighten me?
I've heard supopsed "MS Experts" claim that.NET isn't an actual product and doesn't deliver any new functionality.
Good question. I've heard of cable modem caps due to traffic usage before... However, my Comcast link is always downloading and uploading quite a few things at a time & I've never had it fail (in a way that turning the router on & off wouldn't fix) due to a cap. I haven't even noticed it being slower at the end of the month. Maybe it's just my local area...

That would still be illegal. Just like how Marijuana is legal to purchase in some places, but bringing it into the U.S. is still illegal.

This is the wisest statement I have read in many days.
Since the mid to late 1700s.

And I was SOOOo looking forward to there being more geek women so that maybe, someday, I could find one to tolerate me :(

If that happens, I hope I get the next open job!
It also houses personal web pages. One of those persons has done work on slime molds.

Well, yes. As a matter of fact, I am on stress-alert level 'mauve' at the moment. How could you tell? ;)

:)
It's not a law until it's effective. I knew that it had been signed already. I don't care what your stupid dictionary says

Please quote me the portion of his post that claimed there were no patches necessary after installing the Framework.
He said the framework ITSELF was not a critical update. He is correct.

Then you'd miss the obvious sites like "aspcode.org," "aspobjects.com," or whatever, wouldn't you?
