What kind of code falls between the 2? Sure there is some, but is it interesting?
The whole enterprise middle-tier application world. The one where they spend billions of dollars on software, you know? Where hordes of mindless drones whip out custom code that actually has to run reasonably fast and interoperate with a variety of systems.
In short - everything you want to run in an app server to do business.
So let me get this straight: If I wanted to use Mono, I'd have to:
relearn how to do everything I already know how to do in C++...
rewrite all of my personal libraries...
learn a completely new set of bugs in a new API....
Dude. If you have portable a)threading b)database connectivity c)GUI d)App servers working in you precious little C++ personal libraries setup you are either bullshitting us or smoking dope or do not know what you are talking about.
I have spent many years developing enterprise applications in C++. Even after they (finally. after many years of hell) got more or less portable standard implementations right, stabilized ABI etc etc. it still does not have what it takes to design middle tier stuff. That's where the money are.
you are free to wallow in your desktop/standalone apps (games?)/single platform world, but at least admit there are TONS of benefits of using Java (or.Net) platform for enterprise development (remember - that's where the money are).
Gigabyte is 10^9 bytes. This is the freaking definition of "Giga".[br]
(2^30) that you are thinking about is 1 Gibibyte.[br]
Get your facts straight before spewing. If everybody is using kilobyte to mean 1024 it does not make that right. kilo is 1000, kibi is 1024. That's it, end of story.

- Looks like even better offer then the 2 year CS, is not it?:D
I love switching tracks with on wheel buttons. As well as turning volume up or down.
Sucks to me I have 2001 BMW, and it has no stupid line input and integration. How lame is that? Actually - their "Business CD" head unit sucks rocks, but I can not use much else.
Everybody in my old place: from physicists to techs, were calling themselves "rocket scientists" with pride. I still have some of the T-shirts we ordered: "I am a rocket scientist" and such.
Since when "afford" is equal "not starve to death" ?
Children are not a luxury, and if you do not understand - pity you, you have already lost a better part of your life.
My dad is gravely ill, and he recently told me that growing us was the only thing he can remember as worth doing: and he had a tremendously sucessful carreer late in his life.
And I did not whine. You do. "luxury". Bah. I said that level of pay in academia is a joke and an insult, and totally not worth it. When I am paid four times for half of my time, the choice is rather obvious. I would rather spend my time and money with my family, then scraping for funding in my lab.
I guess my parents, who grew in a concentration camp during war, starved in school, worked their asses off on a factory while going to night college, finally got their Ph.D. and had sucessful careers, but still with no pay, should not have had me and my brother and sister? As they could not afford it?
I do use my cars for longer the 45,000.
When free maintenance on my BMW runs out, I will be changing every 7,500, even though they recommend 15,000, and I change it every 5000 on my wife's Prelude. Only Mobil 1
I also have an acura that is way over 200K and runs smooth. Engine is in great shape and I commute in it.
Regular oil changes pay for themself in the long run. Ripoff is when you bring in your car with gummed and busted engine for major repairs.
I have a wife, a kid, old parents who need financial assistance.
My wife does work, but I prefer her to be happy, not worked out of her mind.
I also like to travel, I skydive, climb, bike and do adventure racing. This is not cheap, but I better be healthy when I go over the hill.
Your lifestyle is a luxury few can afford. And no, I do not have any "unnecessary" bills. I got my Ph.D. from a top program, got offers for various dent positions, looked at pay and told them to go to hell. I considered that pay an insult to myself.
Also, when you finally get you Ph.D and will have to deal with funding, competition etc. you very well may reconsider. My advisor, a leading expert in our field, hardly does any science anymore: all time is spent doing grants and managing projects.
Ever wonder how Miguel got into this position of being more convincing than you are?
Shit happens. (That is actually a perfectly serious answer).
And frigging HASHMAPS.
And regular expressions.
And..
People who claim C++ does everything have not done commercial development. And the hell of thrid party libraries (RogueWave anyone?)
The performance of Sun's Java implementation is excellent
But not near as good as JRockit(BEA) on Intel.

But Java has better support on a bigger variety of systems. And it does not rely on the good will of Microsoft to allow it to run on Linux.
And when using JRockit JVM on INtel harware - it is fast. Faster then equivalent C# code in my applications (prototyped certain numerical algorithms)
And it has a better development environment: Eclipse, IntelliJ etc.
Why C#. Why make it sound that this is some revelation of a language? There is nothing new there.

I will wait until it is under 1K and everybody offers it.

Pefectly acceptable place for Bullshit data, I guess.
And automatically shoot the bastards.

With no line input. :(
Fuck.
Find a job that allows you to be productive telecommuting.
This is horribly low. What, about 25 weeks of 8 hours a day work?
-140 spam messages in the morning..
Makes for a good pickup line.
For anything remotely important transport layer security will take care of snoops.

Sorry, but you are a clueless moron. Grow up.

So what if the hood is shut? Mechanic can open it.
I do not recompile my Linux Kernel either. It is not the hood that matters: it is the legal conditions on who can do what.
This is one of the only things in life worth doing, if you think science is anyhow more important: I think you are an idiot.

Screw science.
