Right on. So what if they sell pirated software. They probably sell drugs, break in houses, steal cable tv, make counterfit money, sell fake rolex watches, steal identities too. If the government can stop all of that, then they can shut those terrorists down in no time !
I know. I never signed up until recently. With the quality of posts on this site going down so much, I don't know if a low UID is something to brag about anyway, except for the fact that you were around during the good ol' days of slashdot. I don't mean to be so negative. I like to have fun as much as anyone else. I just miss the days when Slashdot was cool. It's not anymore. It's more like "SlashDORK". Maybe as the site became more popular, the ratio of noise increases. The larger the group, the lower the overall IQ.
I can't believe I still read slashdot after all these years only to see some stupid pimple face bullshit trash comment like this get a rating of 4. It seems like lately with every story there is a rush to jump on with comments that are oh so cutesy. Fucking stupid fucks.
From my experience, when bugs / security flaws are found in Linux, they are patchable or they are due to the default install leaving something turned on or a port open that should not be. With all of MS patches over the years, windows machines STILL continue to get loads of spyware and viruses no matter how many patches they throw at them. You can't leave a windows machine connected directly to the internet for 20 minutes without it being screwed up with spyware, ect.
This article / book and those who proclaim the I.T. dept is dead are idiots. Let me give you an example: Your company grosses 200 million per year, which is a small business by textbook standards. There is no way in H*ll that your going to trust you're data to google, microsoft, or whoever. It just ain't gonna happen. I don't care if you have 10 GHZ of FREE computing power. We all know that the temptation to do unethical things with someone else's data is just too tempting. As the price of hardware approaches zero, what incentive is there to not keep the data local ? Right now, I don't need 10 GHZ. I need hardware that's redundant and dependable, and a good solid internet connection and I'm good to go. Take that software as a service crap and shove it up your as*.
Now, when my home page goes down, I'm going to create an alternate home page that shows my site under water ! Or how about some new smtp error codes : error 551 mail server temporarily under water. error 552 bilge pump down
They did this experiment already. It was with a drug called cocaine. At first, the monkeys didn't sleep. Then, they slept for a real long time because they died. In fact they are still sleeping.
It seems like a lot of their articles are advertisements. What's the price for getting one of my articles on there promoting my small consulting business ? They should just come out and publish the rates.
I don't know how this is going to happen. My car get 11 mpg average. Even with my foot off the gas pedal. What's with all this global warming conspiracy stuff ?
So, they are going to mars, but haven't quite worked out the details of how to land back on Earth ? This sounds like a bunch of bullsh*t. Maybe they should figure out how to go to space and back and land on earth first, then, attempt something like going to mars. But hey, wasn't that what the space shuttle was supposed to do ??? WTF ????
Oh , I don't actually use my NT machine. I just look at it and admire it. It's a conversation piece. Even back in 1999 the D.O.D. said the only way NT is secure was to not connect it to the internet.
McAfee ??? I can just see some state dude going down to Best Buy and asking the Geek Squad which software is best. Seriously, McAfee sucks. That software always gave me problems. Could they not find a better solution ? The ONLY reason McAfee is in there is because whoever made the purchasing decision did not know any better.
How about let's concentrate on going back to the MOON first. It's a lot closer, and there might actually be some natural resources there for energy.... you know.. that stuff that we use so much of here on Earth ?
"In January 2004, President George W Bush launched a programme for returning humans to the Moon by 2020 and - at an undetermined date - to Mars."
It only took us 10 years the first time we went to the moon. What the hell ? The U.S. was the leader in space exploration and space technology. This makes me sad as an American. Am I the only one that thinks that NASA is one of the most wasteful government agencies that we have ?
Developers can release their software with whatever kind of license they want, but if they make it too restrictive, then less businesses will use it and they get less exposure, ect. I can't see, for example, google, using software written under this license and then turning over modifications that may have given them a competitive edge in the marketplace. They are going to choose to use a different software or write their own.
Sure, go buy one. How are you going to get Windows to recognise 32 gb of memory ? Linux will, but you can't run Photoshop on Linux unless you use something like crossover office. Then, you think you can have photoshop open and using.... oh let's say... 8gb of memory ? I'd love to see a screenshot of that !! I think there is a limit on how much memory and single process can use. You can do VMware and have several machines running on that hardware, but that's no fun.
How are you going to run Windows with 16gb of memory ? Linux can handle that, but my laptop has 4 gb of memory and I've got to put boot switches to get it to recognise all of it. The only way I can think of to take advantage of that kind of memory and still run windows apps is Linux with crossover office running photoshop. There is still probably a limit on how much address space a process can take up. Anyone have anything to add ?
Oracle tried to come out with a linux distribution too. Do you know anyone who uses it ? It was so lame. They even forgot to remove all the "Red Hat" screens in the install. They have been darn successful with databases. They should stick with that and stop trying to put fingers in pies that they know nothing about.
I was not thinking about that at first, but man you nailed it. Based on my experience ( no further comments ) , 90% of the time it IS an inside job. It's a shame that that whoever is fronting the money for that data center is getting ripped off like that. I mean, the equipment can be replaced, but the damage to your business and good name is worth far more than the equipment, nit to mention customer data. The best thing they can do is reopen the business under "new ownership" and a new name. That's what I'd do. Well, I'd be watching my sh*t better than that too though...
The fact that they think they can actually implement this shows how stupid they are. I would guess that some gov agencies do this already on a small number of highly targeted computers. Smart criminals ( there aren't very many ) can beat that stuff anyway. This kind of news is good for Linux, where everything is open and if you really want to know what's going on with your computer, you CAN find out.

When you don't make any money, I guess you could call that recession proof.

Hmmmmm..... Didn't that spaceship crash in Roswell a few months before that in 1947 ? Something to think about ......

Windows NT has a nice looking window manager and uses like 16 meg of memory. Add a pretty wallpaper and your good to go.
They are trying to figure out how to make money because they are selling broadband internet so cheap that the profit margin is thin as ****

HP making skin patches.... HMMMMMM... I want a supercomputer that I can patch on my skin !
